ASHBURN, Va. // Running back Clinton Portis and cornerback Shawn Springs did not suit up Tuesday as the Washington Redskins held their first practice of the week in preparation for Monday night's regular season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

Portis, who partially dislocated his shoulder in the preseason opener against Cincinnati, was the only player not on the field at the start of the workout but arrived to watch before it was over. Springs, recovering from abdomen surgery, and backup defensive end Renaldo Wynn (sprained ankle) also watched from the sidelines.

Portis didn't comment as he left the field. Coach Joe Gibbs said he needs to see Portis practice before putting him in the game. The players will have off Wednesday followed by three days of full practice Thursday through Saturday.

"He is still day to day," coach Joe Gibbs said. "He had a real good day in the weight room and rehab also. He is doing a real good job with it and will continue to expand what he is doing. It is still day to day, though. He feels like he is making good progress."

Portis set a franchise record with 1,516 yards last season. If he can't play, Ladell Betts will get the start.

Springs has been considered a long shot to for the Vikings game. He had surgery to repair a torn abdominal muscle on Aug. 15 and was expected to need four to six weeks to recover, which would rule him out until Week 2 at least.

"I'm a work in progress," Springs said.

Carlos Rogers and Kenny Wright would be the expected starters in Springs' absence.

Wynn said he hopes to practice Thursday.

The good news for the Redskins was the return of two key defensive linemen, Phillip Daniels and Cornelius Griffin. Daniels had missed the final three exhibition games with a sprained back, while Griffin sat out the final two games with a sprained right knee.

"A lot of it was precautionary," Daniels said. "I could've played through the pain, but they said there was no use in preseason. I feel good. I'm glad to be back and get ready for Monday night."

Is this for sure on L Betts getting the nod over TJ? I p/u TJ...but may have to go with Betts.

to me... that's a good sign... if i'm Gibbs and i want to keep the opposing coaches guessing, i tell my back to keep his mouth SHUThopefully he suits up and does some limited practice on Thurs. or Fri.

very bad sign.
He took a day off on a Tuesday, 6 days before they are scheduled to play their first game. It's not a sign of anything. If he doesn't practice on Thursday and beyond, then that is not a good sign. And he spent the day in the weight room and rehab. I don't think it's any bad sign at all.I hope he sits week #1

I would expect for Betts to start over Duckett at this point. Duckett's only been working with the offense for a couple of weeks. If this was week 5 or something, maybe it's different but this is no surprise for me.

The problem for some, is that it's MNF. If you took the right handcuff (Betts instead of Duckett, apparently), you're semi-OK, but if Portis is a dreaded "Game Time Decision", those who have him on the roster must decide whether to play their backup on Sunday, without complete info. Now, hopefully they've rostered Betts, but if you're stuck with Portis/Duckett on Sunday morning, you might begin sweating a little. Do you hold the slot for Monday night, or do you throw Addai/Tatum Bell/random RB3 in there to get something pointswise from the slot in case Portis and Duckett don't amount to much.

Pity the poor SOBs who didn't handcuff at all.

The cuff definitely doesn't do much good if it's "the dreaded game time decision".

Exactly. What are you going to do? Start both of them?

honestly now, how can anyone who misses practice due to injury be seen as a good thing?take off the rose colored glasses.

My league doesn't lock a player until 10 minutes to kickoff. So if the Portis owner has Portis in the lineup, he can switch him out until 10 minutes to Portis' game. If he hears on MNF broadcast that Portis is a no-go prior to that, he can swap any RB into the slot as long as that RB hasn't locked yet, either, so in that case the handcuff would work.

Bigger problem is that Betts/Duckett may split carries, or the Skins go with the hot runner, so in that case the ability to switch quickly is moot.

Washington will likely start Betts if Portis doesn't start, and Betts will get the majority of the carries. The big news that's overlooked here is that Cornelius Griffin is back. His absence on the D-line has been noticeable in the preseason. Very underrated lineman.

Profootballtalk has this to say about Portis:

PORTIS IS EXPECTED TO PLAY MONDAY NIGHT

Although Redskins running back Clinton Portis missed another practice on Tuesday due to a shoulder injury suffered on the first drive of the team's first preseason game of the season, a league source with knowledge of the situation predicts that Portis will be suited up and ready to play against the Vikings on Monday night.

On August 13, Portis had a shoulder pop out of joint and then back in while making a tackle following an interception thrown by quarterback Mark Brunell. Portis hasn't played or practiced since the injury.

Also missing practice for the Redskins on Tuesday was cornerback Shawn Springs, who had surgery on August 15 to repair a torn abdominal muscle

Griffin being back is BIG. The line is not the same without him.Now if they could just get Springs back. He's as important to that d as Portis is to the O.

News Story: Clinton Portis didn't practice on Tuesday, and his status for Monday's season opener remains uncertain, according to the AP. "He is still day to day," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "He had a real good day in the weight room and rehab also." It's not clear how the work load would be split between Ladell Betts, T.J. Duckett and Rock Cartwright if Portis was unable to play.
