Eagles WR Brown injures hamstring in practice

By The Associated Press

July 29, 2006

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Reggie Brown, expected to battle for the Eagles' No. 1 receiver position this year, injured his hamstring in practice Saturday.

Brown limped off the field after running one pass route during training camp at Lehigh University. He spent several minutes stretching and working with a trainer before walking slowly under his own power toward the locker room.

The team would not comment on the injury. Drafted 35th overall in 2005, Brown set a franchise record last season for most receptions by a rookie wide receiver with 43.

Despite starting only the final nine games of the season, he led all NFL rookies with 571 receiving yards and ranked third with four touchdown receptions. He was expected to have a major role this season following the offseason departure of Terrell Owens .

Other than Brown and veteran Todd Pinkston, the Eagles' receivers remain largely unheralded. Veterans Greg Lewis, Jabar Gaffney and Darnerien McCants are trying to make big impressions at camp, along with rookies Hank Baskett, Jason Avant and Jeremy Bloom.

Pinkston is coming off a torn Achilles' that forced him to miss all of 2005. Lewis and Gaffney have nine career touchdowns between them, and McCants has caught a total of 10 passes over the last two seasons.

After Brown left the field Saturday, Baskett caught several passes from quarterback Donovan McNabb, who seems to be gaining confidence in the undrafted rookie.

Tight end L.J. Smith, also expected to be one of McNabb's main targets, missed his third straight practice Saturday with a sprained shoulder, while Bloom and Avant remain day-to-day with minor injuries.

Local news reports indicate that Brown sat out a second straight day with only a "sore" hamstring. Reid added that it was a minor injury and didn't seem concerned.

I don't have a link, but the local TV also reported Pinkston to be having problems with both achilles tendons. They showed a clip of him limping through a drill.

They also say that Hank Baskett is stealing the show at camp, but I wouldn't expect that to continue into the regular season...

The word is now they're calling it a hamstring "spasm". Saying it is definitely not a "tear". Good news.

It's not a tear. Andy Reid said as much. They showed some clips on TV today showing Brown stretching and catching some balls from a machine. It didn't appear as if the injury was effecting him during the light work he was doing and Brown was talking as if it's nothing to worry about.Andy Reid more or less said--were happy it's not a tear and we don't want to hurry him back to practice with a tweaked hammy which could then lead to him tearing the thing.

He should be fine.

any update? I saw something in an Eagles thread that said that he was working overtime with the JUGS machine... if so, does that mean he is back to practicing?

According to the Eagles MB, Philly sports radio is reporting that Brown will start at WR tomorrow night.....alongside UDFA Hank Baskett!

(pinkston being held out, Gaffney in the slot)

Pinkston will be dominating the sidelines!
