Reggie Wayne - HOF?
Marv is 3rd (1102) catches, 7th (14580) yards (Reggie is 8th*), and 5th (128) in TDs...he just got a snub somehow...laughable actually. Should be a shoe-in. The only thing that could hold Reggie back is he only (only lol) has 82 TDs.bostonfred said:8th all time in receptions

You'd really put Steve over Reggie?? Idk. Kinda where it gets tough because you gotta balance stats vs who was throwing them the football...From his generation of WRs (entered the NFL 1996-2004), I'd put Wayne behind Owens, Moss, Harrison, Steve Smith, Andre Johnson, and Fitz. Not sure about Holt & 85.
This was my first thought as well, but when I actually looked at the stats I was surprised at just how close Smiff's stats were to Wayne's. Same number of TDs, better YPC, and about 1000 less receiving yards and 100 less catches. That's not much spread out over 14 years, and then you consider that Smiff did it with about 100 different quarterbacks and systems while Wayne had not only consistency, but absolute premium QB play the whole time. You'd really put Steve over Reggie?? Their stats aren't even that different. Reggie has an extra 700 yards and 7 TDs over their 14 year careers. That's it. Reggie also played in an extra 13 games. (And that's only counting offense; Smith also had 6 return TDs.)You'd really put Steve over Reggie?? Idk. IMO Holt is clearly more deserving than Wayne. From his generation of WRs (entered the NFL 1996-2004), I'd put Wayne behind Owens, Moss, Harrison, Steve Smith, Andre Johnson, and Fitz. Not sure about Holt & 85.
I'd put Wayne in a similar boat as Holt, no HOF, but hall of very good. Then again, I'd have both ahead of a couple HOF WRs.From his generation of WRs (entered the NFL 1996-2004), I'd put Wayne behind Owens, Moss, Harrison, Steve Smith, Andre Johnson, and Fitz. Not sure about Holt & 85.
Chad Johnson does seem to get overlooked a lot, but while he probably deserves more recognition, I wouldn't put him that high on that list. His 2003-2007 stretch of five straight 1,200-yard plus seasons was terrific, but it is hard to forget how he completely failed in New England, plus his clown act and off the field issues do not help his cause.I'd put Wayne in a similar boat as Holt, no HOF, but hall of very good. Sorta hijacking, but I really think Chad Johnson is crazy underrated, and Larry Fitzgerald is crazy overrated. I'd rank that 96-04 group as follows:
1. Owens
2. Moss
3. Harrison
4. Andre
5. Chad
6. Smith
7. Fitz
8. Holt
9. Wayne
Not in the 96-04 group, but I'd put Calvin between Harrison and Andre, and have Marshall and White next in line after Wayne.
I consider only Owens, Moss, Harrison(and likely Calvin) to be HOF locks.
Is the off field stuff really a bad thing though? He wasn't getting arrested or undermining coaches, he was just a character. More Deion than Owens. I wouldn't hold the New England failure against him, Torry Holt couldn't even make it through camp in New England.Chad Johnson does seem to get overlooked a lot, but while he probably deserves more recognition, I wouldn't put him that high on that list. I hope that doesn't happen. Truth be told, if he retired today, I'd argue Antonio Brown is more HOF worthy than Ward.Even though he has not been mentioned and I wouldn't vote him in, many people will conside Hines Ward (especially people that matter . . . the actual voters). Given the Steelers HOF voting bias, I see Ward getting in at some point. That will probably mean someone else in the modern WR era won't make it.
Because Holt got hurt. Besides, he was clearly at the end of his rope then anyway, while Johnson was thought to have plenty left in the tank, yet totally sucked in NE. When you play with Tom Brady for a year and can't even put up numbers that are mediocre, that reflects poorly on you.Is the off field stuff really a bad thing though? How do you define compiler?People can find the Ward HOF thread to rehash his credentials. But much of it is based on winning titles and being a compiler. Brown hasn't had the longevity to have much of a case yet.
