Less than two months after his abrupt and puzzling decision to retire from the NFL at age 23, Glen Coffee has been arrested on gun charges in the Florida panhandle.
Coming off an impressive rookie season, third round draft pick Glen Coffee went through the motions all summer as he dutifully trained with his 49ers teammates before announcing on August 13 that he would be retiring from the game. The decision still has fans scratching their heads, and they aren't alone. In an interview given to Birmingham radio station WJOX on August 18, Glen said his family had "mixed" reactions to the news.
"My family, it was mixed feelings," he explained. "I think they were more worried about why I did because, when I did make the decision, I didn't consult with anybody. It was totally between me and Jesus. It was mixed reviews, mixed feelings. I think in the end, they understand where my heart is. As long as I'm doing OK, I think my family is fine with it."
Now the bad news. Instead of keeping out of trouble and focusing on ministry, Glen was arrested Thursday night and charged with possession of a concealed firearm. The former running back was pulled over for speeding in his 2008 Cadillac in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Glen's car was towed after he failed to show proof of insurance or registration, and he was arrested after officers found a loaded gun in the car's center console.
Glen hasn't yet addressed the arrest, so the mystery surrounding the arrest will join the mystery of why he left football. Hopefully more details will emerge soon.
