Remembering MTV (1 Viewer)

In the early 80's they had a call-in voting show called Friday Night Fights, where they pitted two videos against each other.

For weeks me, my buddy and his older brother must have racked up god knows how much in 976 phone charges to make sure Def Leppard's Photograph stayed champion.

ETA- found a commercial for it https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dRSHAP0HNrM

Question. Some groups including The Carpenters used to put their music to video long before MTV existed. Where the hell would these be seen?
I can remember "American Bandstand" playing what **** Clark called "clips". It's where I saw "Bohemian Rhapsody" for the first time. Videos were first popular in Europe. England had shows in the 70's that played nothing but videos.

Bender's Aerosmith's posts showed how the power of MTV could revive a fledgling band's career. Heart is another one that comes to mind. Paul Simon (Graceland was a great album, but the video for "You Can Call Me Al" elevated it).

Who else?

Where is that video you post like clockwork every time the topic of terrible music videos comes up? Bunch of Scandinavian-looking dudes outside playing horrible music IIRC. I can't find it.
:lmao: Which one? Armi and Danny?

Hurra Torpedo? "Total Eclipse"? (which actually rules)

LOL, it was the Total Eclipse one. Scandinavian, check. Outdoors, not so much.

I can see a bunch of weirdos outdoors in the countryside singing some stupid song. Gonna bug me now.

No, but getting much warmer. Nice archive, BTW.

BTW, listen to that song if you're not with a room full of buddies watching hoops. [grunt] Her voice was ridiculous.
There was a British show called Top of the Pops that started back in the 60s that showed videos. I remember watching it in the 70s. It's the first place I saw Police and U2 videos.

I'd say Peter Gabriel wouldn't have become what he did without video.
