Remembering MTV (1 Viewer)

Great thread. I was instantly reminded how great 38 Special's two big hits were.

Serious question: what is on MTV now? I should know the answer but I don't.

Another big theme in the early/mid 80s was post-apocalypse stuff. Probably due to the popularity of Blade Runner, Mad Max or maybe the throes of the Cold War.

Tom Petty - You Got Lucky

Police - Synchronicity II

Duran Duran - Wild Boys

Scandal - The Warrior

Scorpions - Rock You Like A Hurricane

Billy Idol - Dancing With Myself

Probably a ton more.

It wasn't post-apocalyptic, but "Silent Running" by Mike + The Mechanics had a 'Cold-War-Gone-Wrong' feel to it.

Where is that video you post like clockwork every time the topic of terrible music videos comes up? Bunch of Scandinavian-looking dudes outside playing horrible music IIRC. I can't find it.
:lmao: Which one? Armi and Danny?

Hurra Torpedo? "Total Eclipse"? (which actually rules)
LOL, it was the Total Eclipse one. Scandinavian, check. Outdoors, not so much.

I can see a bunch of weirdos outdoors in the countryside singing some stupid song. Gonna bug me now.
Jump On It?
No, but getting much warmer. Nice archive, BTW.
I don't know if this is the one you're thinking off, but my hatred still lingers for this turd.

My all time MTV memory was spring Break 93. I've never stood more at attention for the American flag. It left a lasting impression on 12 year old me.

MTV Classic has officially launched.
focusing strictly on the 90s/Aughts?

wtf is 'classic' about that?  ridiculous that they choose to pretty much ignore the 80s, which was the greatest decade that network ever experienced.

ETA: not meant as a  rip on you, Bender ... just a rant about the format

No problem.  From what I understand, there will be 80's programming as well.  This morning when they changed over at 3 AM they showed the first hour of MTV from the early 80s - complete with the videos and the veejay hosting.  I don't think there's supposed to be any 2000's stuff.  Mainly 90's with a good bit of 80's.  That's what I've read about it anyway.

There's a David Bowie special on tomorrow afternoon followed by the Ziggy Stardust Movie (which is the 70's oddly enough).  Then Wednesday there is a bunch of 80's programming it seems.

I think mainly 90's centric though

gotcha

earler today i ran across this article which paints a different picture, and fueled my tirade.

huh, your description of format runs a tad better than what was cited in link, kinda  :loco:  now on this -

Yeah well - I take back everything I said because right now they are showing a Black Eyed Peas video from 2005.  FML

They are totally going to #### this up.  There is nothing classic about 10 year old Black Eyed Peas songs.

I will watch if they got all the rights to the Music Videos in the Beavis and Butthead shows - that was the funniest part of the show.  If it's just the 9 minute long episodes without the music videos, I'll really punch something.

I agree with most of the above. If it's going to be videos from 2005 they might as well stayed VH1 Classic. At least there I could see an occasional Jeff Beck concert or stuff from an outdoor metal festival.

Palladium became something else but there was a daily 3 hour feast of Epic Awesome Videos or something like that. Is this the new network?

Followed by a P ussycat Dolls video

I'm out.
2005 nostalgia.  Nice.

But, they aren't trying to attract 40-something viewers.

They want 20-somethings that have outgrown MTV, and fondly remember the crap they were watching 10 years ago.  It's probably a smart move.

Yeah, going for Millenial nostalgia if that is a thing yet. Read that they are going to be reshowing old TRL "episodes," Cribs, Jersey Shore, Punk'ed, Jackass, etc. I imagine it's only a matter of time before they break out other "classics" such as Pimp My Ride, My Super Sweet Sixteen or Road Rules All Stars.

Now if they would replay some Liquid Television, The State, Celebrity Deathmatch, Oddities (loved The Maxx), etc. I'd be all about it. Anyone confirm if Beavis & Butthead will have the music videos? I may try to record Aeon Flux even though I think it is available streaming (or at least used to be.)

MTV Classic should entail anything before they invented reality TV.  Once The Real World appeared, that was the beginning of the end.  Christ, it's like they started Beatles Classic channel, and included a Yoko Ono song.

They need to include head bangers ball so I can see if the videos still hold up.  Although I always found Riki Rachtman sort of femme metal in his persona.

I don't think much of it holds up well.

Whatever you watched on MTV when you were 13-21 years old was the best.  The stuff you didn't like was bad but hilarious, so there's nostalgia there, and the stuff you liked was the best thing ever.  Everyone needs to retain perspective when it comes to nostalgia or 'classic' anything.  What I would like to see on Classic MTV would be a lot of what I might term 'garbage'.  But it's my garbage, so it's great, right?

The 'acting' in the videos is what REALLY doesn't hold up, and how much ironic enjoyment can a person get out of watching 23 year old hair bands pose as romantic leads?

What I'd really love is if they had a show called something like Great Moments in Bad MTV.  Where they focused on really bad videos, bad hair, bad lip-syncing, etc.  Embarrassing moments from their awards shows, that kind of thing.

looks balanced to me   I see blocks for 80s videos, pop from the 90s, headbangers ball, real world, aeon flux, hip hop block, the maxx, trl, b&b (although i only see the new episodes not the classic ones),

Death Knell for everything the channel was for the decade prior to RW's arrival.

can't say I've watched more than 10 consecutive minutes at a time since then (circa '92).

bless YouTube for putting all the nostalgia one click away ... would be cool to have a legit 'classic' outlet somewhere on the dial, but there are other options providing the fix -

do tell, what you got?

I wonder where my free MTV shirt ended up.  I'm pretty sure we had it on day one.  As a little kid with a broken home (nobody was divorced then in my school) I was able to guilt my mom into getting MTV or letting us watch it.  I know it was on 24/7 at my house along with TBS Atlanta Braves and Hawks games for many years.  We couldn't afford NESN.

Real World got me back into it for a short time and of course we never missed an episode of Beavis and Butt Head during high school.

I was about 8 years old when MTV was unleashed. I would say about the time Michael Jackson dropped the album Thriller I was watching and discovering there was a lot more out there besides MJ, by '85 I was on to Hard Rock and Metal. The high water mark for me personally was about the time of Headbanger's Ball and also a daily top 10 that showed a wide range of music from Def Leppard to Debbie Gibson, it was all covered. Nowadays it feels like just one or two genres of homogenized mainstream sounds dominate the radio airwaves.

The Cars "Crazy" I think is the title but that video really got my attention as a kid. Beat It, Billie Jean and especially Thriller all felt like mini movies. Madonna was shocking everyone and even if you were touch n go on her music you couldn't look away.

It was such a wonderful time for music. I don't want to demonize the modern music world because there is a music thread dedicated to indie rock that I refuse to take part in so the joke is on me for not progressing with the times I guess.

The same was true in the 80's as well.

You think the edgy stuff was played on the radio?

There's a reason it was called College Radio.
You had Pop(Madonna/MJ), Rap(RUN DMC/BBs), R&B, Rock(Van Halen), Metal(Metallica), Country

Now it seems like a lot less, maybe I'm wrong.
