Renteria to the Giants (1 Viewer)

WFAN reporting. Link shouldn't be too far off.

ETA: Is it me or are a number of places jumping the gun this offseason with regard to players signing? Anyway, WFAN was wrong on this one, as Renteria's agent has denied that he has signed or that it's even close.

2nd edit: NOW it's on.

Supposedly a two year deal at $9M ea. Other sources say the Giants are denying it.

At this stage of his career, he's just an average hitter and fielder and is declining in both areas. He's an improvement over the Giants' MI mess from last year but it's hard to get excited about the deal if it happens.

Well, he's better than Bocock, Burriss and Ochoa, and younger than Vizquel. Kevin Frandsen really isn't a SS.

Renteria obviously isn't the long-term solution but it's inconceivable that the Giants could enter 2009 with a worse infield than this year.

I really think Burriss could be a better value than Renteria by the end of next given playing time.

I'd rather my team just leave SS empty both in the field and the lineup.

Horrible ####ing player. San Fran fans should revolt if it comes to this.

And for some reason, he's historically been far better in the NL than the AL.

Career AL stats over two seasons:

1,126 AB

18 HR

124 RBI

.274 BA

.384 SLG

Career NL stats over roughly ten seasons:

6,014 AB

109 HR

692 RBI

.310 BA

.410 SLG

$18.5 mm over 2 years for this guy. Wow. That seems like a lot for a guy who didn't hit much last year and has clearly lost a ton in the field.

It is a lot but los Tigres didn't offer him arbitration so there's no loss of picks. From everything I read, I wonder if his range has dropped off enough so that they should move him to second base, leave Burriss at SS. I had read they offered Furcal four years at $11-$12M per year, but apparently Furcal wants to keep playing the market, so I am guessing SF decided to lock someone in now, before all the musical chairs are taken. Even though Furcal is a better player, IMHO, I am glad they only committed to two years at a lower number, and hope they spend the difference elsewhere. Their liineup still is in serious need of a power upgrade, at least two legitimate hitters more than they've got now.

 Sabean has made his share of dumb FA signings, but at least he generally keeps the years down (Zito excepted). I'd much rather have Rentaria for just two years rather than be paying Furcal $12m in 2012-13
