Report: Andre will NOT be suspended (1 Viewer)

Strange message being sent here. Guess it's okay to brawl on the field.
Agreed. You can't touch a QBs head, even with you forearm, but you can punch him in the face if you get in a brawl. Granted, we all know that if it was QB AJ was hitting, he would have been suspended. But the NFL can't operate under that hypocrisy.

The question is, who are you sending the message to?If you are talking about the players, I'd think that a high % of the players would agree that aj was provoked and completely understand his reaction. Now, the message to young fans.....that's a different question. The NFL needs to make an official statement on how they came to this decision

on the one hand the NFL is trying to protect its players from concussions by "considering" suspensions.on the other hand it is not suspending a guy who is throwing punches at the head of a defenseless player without a helmet.

If it was Jacoby Jones brawling instead of Andre Johnson, somehow I think a suspension would be involved.

Two wrongs don't make a right. The message here isn't that it's OK to fight anytime. The message is the NFL will consider the history of the player and events leading up to the incident instead of suspending any player for any fighting. For once I think the NFL is making the correct call.

Dude should put up his dukes if he's gonna fight. He threw the first punch, after that if he's defenseless it's his own fault.

Considering that the NFL ejected Johnson from the game and will further punish Johnson with a large fine, I'd say that the statement in bold is incorrect.
that was near the end of the game. not much impact there.
Yeah, the ejection had very little impact. And people are fined for wearing the wrong clothing. I stand by my statement. To me the league is saying it's not a big deal if a player attacks another player on the field.

Finnigan was on his hands and knees, not even looking at AJ, and AJ was standing over him, trying to knock him out. Let's not act as though AJ was defending himself. Again, if you can't touch a QB head, you shouldn't be able to punch his face.

IMO, this will only encourage players to rumble late in games when the game is already decided without much fear of getting suspended. For players making millions of dollars, the associated fine may not be much of an obstacle.

Similar thing with the helmet to helmet hits. How many suspensions have there been? Zero. How many similar incidents have there been after the threat of pending suspensions? Plenty.

I think the real lesson here is if you are one of the good guys and not a ########, you can get shown some leniency when you make a mistake. Like Spiderman says, "everybody gets one".

AJ's not being suspended because the Texan's are scheduled to play on the NFL Network this coming Thursday. If this had occured any other week, he and Finegan would both be getting a 1 game suspension.

Totally self-serving by the NFL brass on this decision.

I agree with you 100%. Unless the fine is very substantial, this would seem to send only a weak statement to both players and the public. You can get suspended for your actions off the field (see Roethlisberger) even if you aren't convicted, but to assault another player on the field and you get no suspension. Very strange indeed.

"Cortland Finnegan's new jersey will read "innegan" as a result of Andre Johnson beating the F out of him." - @JohnnyKeller

Finnegan was on the ground because he was trying to take the fight to the ground as he is well known for his jui jitsu. If Johnson did not punch him, Finnegan obviously was about to jump up to knock AJ out.

I never thought he was defending himself from immediate danger. I think he was defending his pride after receiving cheap shots from Finnegan (where the refs did nothing) and hearing him yap all day. AJ doesn't have a history of fighting or disciplinary action that I'm aware of other than a fine for pulling Finnegan's helmet off. Given his stellar previous history and the actions from Finnegan that led to the fight, I don't see why the NFL has to suspend AJ here. Also, they usually don't suspend players for shots to a QB's head. It usually requires some extreme circumstances.

Fascinating. I imagine the league to have left itself open to all sorts of criticism and second guessing by this decision. I do note that this decision is consistent with matters pre-Goodell, but it seems strange in this era.

Wait, which statement do you stand by again? "The league is saying it's not a big deal" or "The league is saying it's okay to brawl".Because those two statements are not the same.

He had it coming. Not sure why everyone is going after AJ here.
Because AJ was just as much of the instigator in that and no matter what goes on, you can't lose your cool like that. You can't go off throwing haymakers.I think its ridiculous that there is no suspension with that. Also thought it ridiculous that there wasn't one for Seymour. You get penalized worse with fines and possible suspensions for things that happen in a split second during a play...but start ripping off helmets and throwing punches and its all good other than a fine.

Also Haynesworth was suspended five games for stepping on some guy's head.

Really?Fine. Hit the guy. When he falls down, walk away. He stood over him throwing haymakers. If he did nothing wrong, whey did they toss him out?
Basically:Finnegan = Scut FarkasAJ = RalphieExcept Scut was bright enough to not get up from the fight and applaud himself.
I am not arguing a moral issue. But if that happened in a bar, both would be arrested. If it happened at a normal place of employment, both would be fired. I am not saying AJ did anything different that what I would have done. AJ wasn't defending himself, he was fighting. At the end, he was fighting a helpless person, even. That should warrant a suspension, IMO.

Your wrong if you think a dude stomping his cleats on a player's unprotected head while he's on the ground is even in the same league as a fist fight.

It didn't happen in a bar.

Sounds like a lot of owners in here play against AJ next week.
Wow, disagree with this. Now the precedent is set that someone won't be suspended for reigning blows down upon another player. To me this is a big deal and seems incredibly inconsistent with the way the league has been attempting to clean up the game and players.

It is called an analogy.I made one to point out that in other aspects of society, a person is repsonsible for their actions, even when defending themselves. Once the guy is on all fours, if you don't stop, you go to jail, or get kicked out of a bar, or get fired. I am not saying AJ should go to jail. I am pointing out the difference between defending yourself and taking it a step further.

Precisely. Add to the fact that he's been a good character guy, Finnegan has not, and Finnegan was the one who instigated it...Seems like the NFL got this one absolutely spot-on by not suspending him. Now, the best part would be to see Titans fans losing their minds if/when their thug gets hit with a suspension.

Unless that other player has had a pretty clean history and was goaded into the fight by a cheap shot artist all day, I think he will find that that precedent has not been set.

How long was Seymour suspended? This is simple really.

-This is a very old rule and its clear that if you throw a punch, you're out of the game. Doesn't matter if its first minute or final. Just happened to be late in this one.

-That's the FIRST part of the punishment.

-The second part is the monetary piece. We all talk like $50-$100k is nothing to these guys. Try telling that to them. 5% or so of anyone's annual salary is usually enough to be significant. Add to it that this isn't a job they work at for 30 years and its actually worth a lot more.

-In this case, there are no biases or whatnot. They simply looked at one guy who is known to have multiple prior instances (to the point that the league has sent a letter to him warning him). The other guy is a guy that is known to be as quiet and squeaky clean as there is with absolutely no prior instances. The are simply looking at the COMPLETE body of the issue and its fair.

:hey: we'll agree to disagree. I don't think the league should allow people to punch each other in the head, clean history or not, goaded or not. Players are being suspended for vicious hits, but an all out fight doesn't incur any suspension seems odd to me.
