Report: Herm Edwards to KC for mid-round picks (1 Viewer)

gbill2004

Footballguy
NFL Network's Adam Shefter reports that the Jets and Chiefs are locked in "serious negotiations" regarding Herm Edwards.

Shefter believes Edwards is almost as good as gone. The Jets will likely get multiple mid-round draft picks for Edwards. Jets owner Woody Johnson must not want to give Herm a long-term deal. The Jets could possibly lose Edwards and defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson. Jan. 3 - 7:18 pm et

What impact will this have on LJ?

Fantasy football aside, this is an absolute steal for the Jets. Edwards is not that great of a coach, so if you can get draft picks for him, that is like stealing from the blind.

I thought the NFL outlawed draft pick compensation for coaches
Man, has this been beaten to death in the Jets forums. here is the deal:Compensation and trades are two different things. Gruden, for instance, was traded for picks. The Parcells and Belichick soap operas were coaches who broke contracts and the losing team was awarded compensory picks, as decided by Tagliabue.... the NFL commisiioner's office. They have taken a position that they won't award comp any more.... they want the teams to come to amicable trade agreements.

The two year old rule forbids picks to be traded for FO and CS below the level of HC/GM. It is frowned on by the NFL, but it is still legal to trade draft picks for HC's and GM's. So.... trades, negotiated trades are legal, but can still be nixed by Tagliabue, who wants to discourage having coaches that are under contract from breaking them and being moved to a new team.

For additional clarification, from PFT:CLEARING THE AIR ON PICKS FOR COACHES After the Bucs acquired Raiders coach Jon Gruden by sending a pack of picks to the pirates of Piedmont, the NFL circulated a memo that supposedly prohibited this practice. As explained in the January 17, 2003 St. Petersburg Times, the Competition Committee had concluded that the use of draft picks to secure coaches could be undermining the purposes of the draft. Not long thereafter, then-Bucs G.M. Rich McKay told ESPN.com that the memo was not intended to apply to head coaches. At a time when there will be plenty of head coaching vacancies and not enough high-end candidates, some teams could be interested in guys who already are gainfully employed with other NFL teams. Thus, the possibility of using draft picks has come up again, and plenty of our readers wanted to know whether the practice was still permitted.League spokesman Greg Aiello told us on Monday that draft picks can be used to acquire a head coach or a high-ranking club executive (such as G.M. or the equivalent). Draft choices cannot be used, per Aiello, to acquire coordinators, position coaches, or executives below the level of president or G.M. We've got a feeling that this rule will come into play for at least one of the current coaching and/or G.M. vacancies this year, possibly if the Chiefs come after coach Herm Edwards of the Jets.

John Clayton said on SportsCenter tonight that he didn't believe Carl Peterson would deal for Herm Edwards. Clayton believes that multiple early-mid round picks would be needed to acquire Edwards and Peterson isn't likely to meet those demands.

Not for nothing, but Herm Edwards sucks. Why KC would want him is beyond my imagination.
You got me on that one, but.... Peterson and his wife took ol Hermie and HIS wife out to dinner the Friday night before game 1 in KC. What was Herm's wife doing there? Why would an opposing team's GM take them out to dinner? I think this has been in the works for a long time, and I think Clayton is wrong. KC won't trade a 1st for Edwards, but a 2nd and a 3rd seem very possible right now.... even likely.

If this can be proven, the Chiefs can expect to lose more than a mid-round pick for Edwards. Thats tampering.

:lmao: The Jets ought to be giving a couple of picks to get someone to take Edwards off their hands. There's got to be someone else out there that Peterson can get who he like as a HC as much as Edwards. KC is finally getting their team straightened out & is showing some teeth on D. They can use the draft picks to shore up a few spots & they're in the hunt as a contender again.

When is having dinner with someone you have known for 28 years tampering?Edwards was taken as an undrafted free agent out of college by Philadelphia in 1977. **** Vermiel was the Head Coach and Carl Peterson was his personnel assistant. They go way back.

Rovers, yer making me ill ...

I think this bumps LJ down from possible #1 to #3 overall pick. If Saunders stays then maybe not.
If Vermeil had stayed, I think LJ should have been a lock for 1.01. His 26+ ff ppg as starter the last 2 years is the highest I've ever heard of at RB. With Sheilds gone and Vermeil gone I can see him going anywhere from 1.01 to 1.03.

How do we know if he sucks or not? He led them pretty far last year. This year the team was hit with a lot of injuries. Maybe the Jets are just like the Cardinals, Lions, Saints, and Browns; teams or organizations that just don't provide what coaches need to suceed.

Why the hell would anyone want to give up anything for Herm Edwards? The Jets are making off like bandits here.

As a Jets Fan I couldn't agree more. Herm is terrible at game management. He does get his team ready to play, but the in game ability of Herm is very weak.

I have to believe if they let him go Henderson and Hemerdinger will be the only two candidates.

They are both very good. IMHO

Heimerdinger is a bit of a blow-hard, but given this team's woeful offensive performance, my money is on him rather than Henderson. Teams have a tendency to move from one extreme to the other as far as philosophies are concerned when something isn't working (e.g. the Rams rumored interest in a defensive-minded head coach).

Careful what you wish for Jet fans. Long Island native Mike Tice could be the frontrunner for the job if Herm leaves.Any truth to the rumor that Tice is Rich Kotite's illegitimate son?

it doesn't affect LJ one bit..IF roaf doesn't stay, they'll be able to replace him, there are free agents out there ( Runyan) who can join that chiefs line and move positions to cover Roaf's spot..I don't think that'll be a problem whatsoever..the Giants signed Karim McKenzie from the Jets, and he has been golden for them, so I don't worry about the chiefs NOT finding someone to fill roafs shoes..they lost another John Tait to Chicago LAST YEAR, and LJ STILL went nuts..I wouldn't worry about a thing! ;)

and remember, when KC acquired Roaf, they moved Tait from LT to RT to accomodate him, so they can do the same with whomever they sign or draft, either move a current linemen, or a newly acquired one.

Not sure, especially for a coach with a losing career record.

I would be worried about the offensive scheme changing, but I don't see how LJ won't be a 1400 yard back with 15+ TDs.

There's been chatter on NY-talk radio that Tice and Haslett will be candidates, along with Henderson, if Herm goes to KC.

Just heard on WFAN that a deal between the Chiefs and Herm/Jets could be completed very soon, as early as tonight.

As a Jets fan, this is just MINDBOGGLING....I'm not happy cuz I wanted Bradway gone more but, how can a KC fan be happy about this?

Weird stuff.

get rid of Bradway pleaseBradways negativestaking Ed Reed over Brian Thomassigning Pennington to a 55 million dollar deal drafting McGraw in the 2nd roundgiving up a first for Doug Jolleytrading a second round pick for Justin McCarienslosing Ferguson this offseasonlosing McKenzie this off-seasongiving up the world to draft Dwayne Robertson out ofKENTUCKY.. Bradway's positivesDrafting Vilma (although that was kind of obvious)Drafting Eric Coleman in the 6th (great pick)not having given Abraham a boat-load of moneyFielder signing this year was good.. not his fault hegot hurt I will also complain about the Santana for Colestrade, but Santana would never have been this good onthe Jets with Pennington throwing the ball.. But thetruth is that Coles is damaged goods and has lost anyplaymaking ability i'm missing some.. but

Please join me in welcoming Long Island native Mike Tice back to New York.Someday very soon the Jet fans are going ot miss Rich Kotite.LOL

word is that the JEts are only getting mid rd picks - read something on the JEt message board about a 4th and a 5th rd pick for himAlso rumored is Herm to take Donnie Henderson with him. Bradaway stays with Dinger named as the HC by Fri. IMO - if trueShould have gotten at least a 3rd for Herm - Can live with Dinger as HC - like what I have heard from him.

Herm isn't worth any picks at all, so getting a 4th and 5th rounder would be awesome for the Jets. But I also thought the Pats were extremley stupid for giving up picks to the Jets to get Bill Belichick and look how that turned out. Obviously Kraft made a great move. You just never know.

As a Jets fan I like Herm but would be happy if this comes to fruition. Talk is a possible third and fourth rounder for Herm. Herm is a good motivator and good talent evaluator but not so great at in game adjustments, too conservative and terrible at clock management. If the Jets get picks in return that they can either use to build depth or even trade to move up. Possible replacements per speculation: Mike Heimerdinger Mike Tice :hot: Jim Haslett :wall: Pete Carroll

Henderson would be good, but Tice and Haslett shouldn't even be head coaches in the NFL. As a Jets fan, I'd be pissed if either one of them gets the job.

WFAN in New York is reporting that Herm Edwards is out as Jets coach. It could become official as early as tonight.

EDWARDS NEW COLOR IS RED

Source Confirms: Chiefs Will Name Edwards New Coach Friday

Herman Edwards is out in New York. The Chiefs will announce Edwards as their new head coach this Friday at a press conference in Kansas City. The Jets will also also hold a press conference later this week and all indications at this juncture are that general manager Terry Bradway will continue to hold his position. The Jets are expected to name offensive coordinator Mike Hemierdinger to the position of head coach while Jets defensive coordinator Donnie Henderson will follow Edwards to K.C.

STUPID MOVE IMHO by both teams btw...

Hey Trent Green, Tony Gonzalez and Eddie Kennison, that's your fantasy value waving bye-bye! :bye:

wow, didn't expect this so soon. I actually think a defensive mind is good for KC, as a team. For their fantasy football offensive stats, not so sure.

This was posted on that web site earlier today - is Dino Costo a legit source???WFAN in NY reports the teams are still haggling over compensation with commissioner intervention tonight. Should be all set by tomorrow's scheduled press conference for the Jets (prescheduled end of the season media wrap up)

That made me laugh....too funny. If Herm Edwards comes here, the question then becomes who will be the OC? Norv Turner?

My hope would be Mike Martz.....he needs to be a OC, not a Head COach.

They're reporting this as a close-to-done deal in the New York Times, fer cryin' out loud. So I figure the Jets hire Heimerdinger as HC, trade for Volek using some of the compensation for Edwards, and cut Curtis Martin. Also, they trade Abraham, and use the pick to trade up to select Reggie Bush. Er, maybe not...
