Report: Nats offer Teixeira $180 million... (1 Viewer)

As per Rotoworld...

MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports that the Nationals have offered Mark Teixeira an eight-year, $180 million contract.

It's possible. The Yahoo! report from earlier today said the Nats had made an offer believed to be at least $150 million for seven year, but didn't have the real details. Ladson covers the Nats for MLB.com, so he should have some reliable sources.

If I'm Tex I will take whichever team (BAL or WSH) offers me more money, knowing that in 3 years the Yankees or Red Sox will trade for me anyway.

As long as he doesn't stay with the Angels, I could really care less where that greedy little sum##### ends up.

Is it just me, or are the LA Angels on the verge of having an extremely disappointing off-season?

Lose out on CC and probably Tex. Let K-Rod get away (not that I blame them). And probably have a dogfight on their hands for the pitching guys that are left. That roster will look very interesting come Spring Training.

From what I have seen/read, the Red Sox are still the front runners in the Tex sweepstakes and some experts have said they expect him to sign with Boston within the next week.

The Angles should be o.k. in the pitching department - they've got lots of good young arms in the organization. They will have a big hole to fill in the batting order if they lose Tex however.

Giambi?

Anyone that signs him will regret it from day 1 to the end of the contract.
:excited: Guys most likely to never win a championship, regardless of the empty numbers they put up:1. A-Rod2. Teixeria
OK, I'll bite . . . why?Tex played for a TEX team going nowhere, an ATL team going nowhere, and was a rent-a-player for LAA and had a 1.017 OPS in his one playoff series (basically meaning it wasn't his fault the Angels lost).Of current major leaguers under 30, he has the 4th highest OPS+ score after Pujols, Cabrera, and Wright.I personally don't think any player is worth $20-25M a season and for that many years, but why would any team regret signing him? Or are there a bevy of gold glove winning, .300 hitting, 30 homer, 120 RBI firstbase men on the market?

The guy simply is not a good teammate. From the moment he was drafted, it was all about him and what he gets. I have heard from more than one former teammate talk about how the guy is a complete drain on a clubhouse while still projecting to the public a "good guy" image. The guy holds grudges forever and can just really suck the life out of a team over time. Think Barry Bonds with a better PR person.

As a Red Sox fan, I cannot see how he could be any worse than Manny. Maybe Tex would be different on a winning team in an organization that have less tolerance for his antics . . .

Tex to the Red Sox would be a good experiment. I see the Sox as a bunch of baseball gym rats. Guys that love the game and would run through brick walls to win. If just a little bit of that would rub off on Tex, he would be something really special.

 If you only read this forum, you'd find a valid reason to never sign any player ever for one reason or another. The team that gets Tex is going to get a gold glove winning, switch-hitting machine for the next 6-8 years.

If the Yankees don't get Tex, then throwing all that time and money into the pitching will be an even bigger mistake.

As a Rays fan, nothing the Yankees have done yet this off-season has given me room to pause. Now the Red Sox signing Tex...that would suck.

No, worse. He ####ed me instead. When he was drafted by Texas nobody was a bigger Tex fan than I was. Followed every game in his short Minor League career and was ready for him to breakout. When the whole A-Rod thing blew up and he fled to NY, I was ready for Tex to be the face of the franchise and be that guy to build your team around. Didn't happen, and all the guy could do was ##### and complain about his situation. He could not wait to get out of Texas, and I'm willing to bet he will not be happy with where ever he ends up after some time there. The guy is a complete tool just looking for a paycheck. He will never be a winner.

It's Texas. I really cannot blame the guy for being unhappy there. I'm an A's fan but I live in Southern California and hear/read about the Angels all the time. I never heard one problem with him being in Anaheim. Sometimes being on a really crappy team can have a negative effect on you. And Texas has been a very crappy team for a very long period of time.

Tex in Baltimore today. Will be in Mr. Angelos' suite at Ravens game.Hope he brought a pen.
I hope things don't go well. I do not want the O's to spend this kind of money on him.Even though he was still under team control, I don't see how after Pedroia just signed his contract that Tex is worth $180mm. The O's need to focus on signing Markakis and then we can worry about bringing in high dollar free agents. Tex is a much more expensive, slightly upgraded version of Huff. No thanks.

Well, the Ratbirds lost, so you have that going for you...The O's have a tradition of powerhitting firstbasemen from Boog to Eddie to Raffy. Tex would fit right into that progression. I agree that signing Nick longterm is very important, but theyr'e not mutually exculsive.

Rumors rampant in Baltimore today that Tex will sign with the Orioles.

Which, in my experience, means Boras is putting the screws to Boston or the Angels, and that he'll sign with one of those teams within the next 24 hours.

 I don't think he wants to sign with another also-ran team. My guess is that he signs with the Sox. And the Yankees and Angels will bid for Manny.

The_Man is right. I was out of town today but I got a couple different phone calls from people saying it was on the radio. 7yrs, $160MM.

The more I think about it, the more I am ok if they sign him. Maybe it will show other players that the Orioles are serious about putting a good product onto the field and not afraid to open up the vault. Hopefuly this could trigger a Markasis signing and possibly even Roberts.

The lineup could look like this:

1. Roberts (S)

2. A. Jones ®

3. Markakis (L)

4. Tex (S)

5. Huff (L)

6. Wieters (S)

.

.

.

Now, if only we had a #2 or #1 starter we might be on to something.

Boston will shell out 200 mill to get him.
If Boston drops 200 million for him...the best part of that move was signing Pedroia first.
What does the Pedroia signing have to do with Teixeira?
They would have had to pay Pedroia a lot more if they showed thier hand that they were willing to pay that much for Tex. Saved them probably 30 million.
I doubt it. The talk was that they would need to offer Tex 8 or 9 years for up to $200 million long before Pedroia signed. The other thing people are forgetting is that the Pedroia signing takes into account several years of arbitrtation that the Sox would have had (and thus could have under paid him). That's why his pay is so low for the next 3 years before he gets a pretty big jump dollarwise. Also, since he was not a free agent and nowhere close to being on the open market, it's not like 5 teams were all trying to outbid each other. So the Tex and Pedroia IMO were completely unrelated. It's not like Pedroia didn't know Manny was getting paid $20M a year.

As I outlined in a couple of these threads, the Sox shed like $50 million a year in salary at one point this offseason, so IMO they had money to do whatever they wanted to do. I still think Pedroia had his hands tied by looming arbitration years and not being a free agent, so I'm not sure his extension would have been much different before or after a potential Tex signing. I suppose anything is possible though.

There is no way in hell Pedroia is getting 30 million more out of the Sox if they sign Teixeira. If Pedroia asked for that much, the Sox would gladly go to arbitration with him every year.

Wow that's really good news if he doesn't go to the Sox. Won't believe it until he signs with someone else though.

ESPN butchers another report.

I think he'll go to the Nats now. My guess is that they're the only team in the $180 million range and everything else was just Boras trying to drive up the price.

I think John Henry's just playing games. I'm pretty sure Boras has already all but told the Nats to GFY

I don't think you know who is in the position of power here. If Henry is playing games, Tex isn't going to the Red Sox. Boston isn't going to be able to rake them over the coals just because they're the best team that's interested. Tex is a Boras client, and is going to go where the most money is. If that's in Boston, he'll go there. If it's not, he'll be fitted for his Angels/Nats/O's uniform within the week.I REALLY don't see a Boras guy taking $10-$12 million less so that he can play for a good team. I'm sure Boras has already sold him on the prospect of putting a team like the Nats on his shoulders and carrying them out of the basement and that within 8 years they will be the Red Sox, blah blah blah. And if not, he's probably told him that the Yankees will just trade for him like they did with A-Rod.

HOW DARE YOU!!!!!!!

Good for Henry for not only refusing to play games, but come out and say so on the market. Attention league: If anyone is using us to drive up the price, just wanted to let you know we're out of the running. Boras has been leveraging the Sox' interest to drive up Tex's price all offseason; now he's down to leveraging the two DC metro teams.

I thought he was using the DC teams to leverage the Sox and Angels. Perhaps it backfired on him, and you give him too much credit.

Don't call the Orioles a "DC team". They are VERY sensitive to that up there in Charm City. In fact, this year, for the first time in around 20 years, the O's road jerseys will say Baltimore across the front, and not Orioles.
