resolution:Doug Williams next Saints coach (1 Viewer)

As Cowherd said, the NFL has outgrown NO and it's time to move on. The city is more interested in parties then schools, law enforcement, and roads.

Cowherd can kiss my ###.....first off we need a chance to rebound from THE LARGEST NATIONAL DISASTER IN AMERICAN HISTORY. Personally, I think that Katrina was a blessing and I am a person who lost everything! Granted, the city was in bad shape and before the storm we may have very well been on the verge of losing our team (see above post @ city council). But we have a chance to straighten things out down here - whether we can do this or not is yet to be seen; but at least give us a chance. :boxing:

The New Orleans City Council just passed a resolution urging the Saints to hire Doug Williams as their new head coach, and some are saying this shows politicians have gone too far in their fascination with sports.

:lmao:

I love that this is from a San Antonio site

I'm suprised Jessie Jackson hasn't rallied around the cause. Lord knows he always has to be involved in anything with sports, that has a black angle. If he only could fight for things that matter........

If I'm not mistaken, the councilman who spearheaded this is Doug Williams lawyer(and I assume agent) as well. These guys are just trying to find new ways to abuse their power since Katrina has changed the landscape of corruption. They know that this is probably their last time around in office and are milking it for all they can. I can hardly blame them, they are virtually unemployable in any real life situation, and they know it.

And I am sure Benson paused long enough to hear what any politician in this state has to say because you know he REALLY CARES now. At least thats what Tagliabue told him to say for the next year or two before they bolt for L.A.

Doug Williams being named head coach would be about par for that franchise.I don't like any of the coaching candidates out there right now, although Martz would be an interesting choice given the weapons New Orleans has on offense. How about that guy that lied on his resume? The one Notre Dame was going to hire? Or was he the guy that got caught with the hooker and a huge room service tab? I get my coaching scandals mixed up.

N.O. needs leaders who can visualize a new kind of city - one which could serve as an example of planning for the rest of the century. If they can pull off a city which is public-transit oriented & walkable, using the flood zones for open green space, and to also make it not in imminent danger from flooding by moving the population & business centers, that would be huge.

He's at UCF I think, and has offered Tice a job, since Tice gave him one after the ND fiasco.

That would be cool. I've always thought Tice was miscast as an NFL coach, but he seems to be much better suited for the rah rah college game.

As a fan of a NFC South team not named the Saints, I am all for a Doug Williams hire. It would help make the Saints an even easier 2 Ws on the schedule. Williams sounds like about as good of a hire as the Saints usually make.

How could he possibly be any worse than Haslett?

There's alot of talk here in Dallas that Sean P. may be the new coach, he's interview twice for the position and has said publicly that he'd love to coach for the Saints.

That guys a jellyfish, and my impression is that he'd be a total company man....which shoots him right to the top of the Saints list.

Cowherd = smartMaybe the NFL can come back to NO in a few years...but they should not have a pro franchise anymore.

I'm also a fan of a NFC South team and would like the Saints to get better. The Falcons play them twice a year, and I would like them to be enjoyable games. Entertainment is all I care about, and a good coach could improve that.

That instantly makes Dallas a better team. I hate Payton. He sucks. His play calling is awful and he is very unimaginative. Granted, Parcell's probably had a hand on the reigns as well but some of the plays this guy called could get sniffed out by a pop warner team. I hope he enjoys himself in New Orleans. :bye:

From the same article

Indianapolis (-9) over Pittsburgh, Sunday The Steelers have one chance in this game, and that involves ripping up Peyton Manning's knee the first time he tries to throw the ball. I'm no expert, but sooner or later, that strategy is bound to backfire.
They got some quality sportswriters in S.A., eh? Even as a Bengals fan I think this is just, well, lazy analysis more than anything (and yeah I do think the Colts will cover).-QG

I know Benson isn't considered a great owner by many, but honestly, if I were him this would be the final straw I would need to divest myself from the New Orleans area.

Councils pass silly resolutions all the time. Of course given all the 'success' of the Benson era, maybe he should give the council a shot ;) -QG

You have to realize that this "resolution" got almost no play locally and the relevance was dramatically over-stated by this author who is with the San Antonio media. The two cities now have a hate-hate relationship and the media on both sides constantly jab at each other. As I understand it the resolution "asked" Benson to consider Doug Williams for a spot on the Saints as a coach or back office person. Again, this is something that was dug up by this guy in San Antonio and received almost no publicity, discussion or relevance here. As someone said, city councils make BS resolutions every day.

The city is more interested in parties then schools, law enforcement, and roads.
Don't forget leveés - oh wait - I think they might have a renewed interest in them
As someone that knows four people that died as a result of Katrina I find this to be an extremely classless comment.

You could polish off a six pack watching highlights of Parcells treat this guy like a dog on the sidelines. I thought Peyton was his son at one point during the Rams game at the end of the season.

Sorry for your loss. May God be with you and all New Orleans folk. I guess football is pretty stupid. Only since this is a football site, what would be best in the healing of the city regarding the football team? My only thought was the Fed Gov chipping in and making a super investement in the Saints (and maybe the Hornets) to make them a franchise equal with the best in the league. However, that the Fed Gov is too cheap and unconcerned that they still haven't even ID'ed bodies and they are still in foot lockers is appalling. Of course, a sin, and perhaps a better likelihood WOULD be them investing money in business and taking care of those buddy buddy with the current totalitarian state and something as trivial as a professional football franchise.

I have no idea what you're thoughts on Benson are but I can tell you from experience being a native North Carolinian that it is my personal beilef that you have a scumbag owner in George Shinn currently in your city. Well, the Hornets are in Oklahoma City. Personally, if he got a dime from anyone to help the Hornets help in healing the city I'd bet he'd find a way to pilfer that money away for himself and rob you guys of anything you deserved.

I'm not a N.O. guy so I can't judge so harshly of Benson but the guy seems like a sleezeball to me.

I'd personally like to see both owners stripped of their teams and given to the city. That is, ensured the teams will make money for it. Don't like Shinn and don't like what I've heard of Benson.

For my last opinion, I'll submit a joke, which is sardonic, that I read in Playboy:

Did you hear Bush's opinion on Roe vs. Wade?

He didn't care how people got out of New Orleans.

 Bush

Really, if you are a Saints homer, write your ideal script/scenario.

I don't think any panther fans can talk about the Saints as 2 easy w's now can they? Look it up.

Horrible person more than a horrible owner. What he needs to do is divest himself from pro football, ride off into the sunset, and sell to someone who is interested in winning. (wishful thinking I know) The people of N.O. deserve it even before the storm.

psychobilly = say just about anything is possible, a magic genie grants you all the wishes you want, what do you wish for the Saints and the city?

1) Benson sells to a local guy who is intelligent and knows at least a little bit about football.2) State smartens up and builds a brand new state of the art retractable roof stadium off of Canal St. (of course get a LOOONG term commitment from the team. Since it's a genie make it an eternal commitment)

3) Psychobillies lives happily ever after along with the room full of Lombardi Trophies the Saints win over the course of my lifetime.

The city is going to be fine. We need to star acting like it IMO.

:goodposting: Any other Saints homer is firmly encouraged to rub the lamp. After all you guys have been through, you deserve it.

Thanks for the sentiments. As far as the Saints go, the bashing of the fan base by the media gets old. The fans sold the Superdome out for 36 games in a row--going into the 2004 season under constant threats to leave and to watch medicore football at best. The Saints won one playoff game in their history (with sell outs all along the way) and months after the accomplishment Benson is threatening to leave unless they build him a new stadium--the same stadium that was subsequently used to host the Superbowl. No NFL fan base has been forced to endure both bad football and the threats to leave for as long as the New Orleans fans. Benson's horrible management of the franchise has alienated corporate support and I just wish he'd sell it to the local parties that are interested in buying the team. We've supported the team and I think we deserve better ownership.

This is the same city that has the most graft in metropolitan city besides Camden NJ. Umm mr Mayor can we look to start a job training program. Umm no but you can look into my season ticket package............

First off, good luck to ya. But I don't think it's gonna get any better down there any time soon when they have elected officials who are overly concerned with getting other blacks in non-related positions. Since Katrina it has just been one foot in their mouth after another. It's an embarassment. Get the damn houses, roads, schools, and communities built, then worry about your next BLACK headcoach! Sheesh!
