Respectablity is Reached?--Washington Wizards 2014-2015 Regular Season (1 Viewer)

They had a great formula last year. Pick n roll with the bigs or wall driving and dishing to a wide open shooter.

Wuh happened?
I'm not sure when it was ever that great a formula. The 19-6 start was, in retrospect, built on a charmin-soft schedule and a lot of close wins. Here's the schedule- knowing what we now know about the teams and remembering how bad the Cavs were before Jan 1, how many quality wins are there in those first 25? I see maybe three.

If by last year you mean last season, remember that they were under .500 before catching fire in April mostly because they caught a bunch of tanking teams.

Also, even when they were red-hot it was mostly based on elite defensive numbers. The offense was ranked in the teens.

Please explain to me why Gortat(who was playing well)sat the entire 4th quarter?

Defense and turnovers doomed what was a decent offensive effort but I doubt many expected the Wiz to beat this team anyways.

ETA:And how does Nene get the 2nd lowest shot total among the entire team who played minutes(4)?

A loss to the Sixers is next up :D

I can't explain it because Wittman refuses to explain it. God forbid a coach answer a media question that pretty much every fan would like answered. You're not good enough to go Belicheck mode, Randy.

Loss to the Sixers isn't quite next- before that one they get to lose to the coach they fired and replaced with Wittman

Nene was a victim of some ref baiting by Green that threw him off his game. The turnovers were awful - don't know how many they ended up with but they had 18 at halftime. Couldnt understand why Wall wasn't constantly attacking the rim with Bogut playing so sparingly.

It has been a trend for Wittman to sit Gortat in the 4th of late but with the guy playing a decent game and one of the better rim defenders they have I just can't imagine the thought process in this one given the type of game they were in.

I glossed over the T-Wolves game(and very possible loss)so my mistake.Maybe they can lose these next 2 and fire Wittman?

One can hope can't he? :P

26 - so only 8 in the second half

The time has come for the Wizznutzz to once again remind fellow Wizards fans of the wisdom the guru Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, who said:

Giving up is the first step, but real giving-up is the insight that there's nothing to be given up.

#FireWittman

#FireErnie

Caught bits and pieces of the game and it seemed like they just gave up once the T-Wolves made the run to get back into the game and then eventually dominate it.

Now we get to see them lose to the Sixers. Not sure what Ted is wating for but this has turned into a full blown disaster on both ends of the floor.

That was pretty ugly. I typically blame Wittman, but I don't know how much I blame last night on him. Injuries keep compiling, and Webster still ain't right. Lack of depth definitely a problem though.

At least there are reports that Beal could be back for the Sixers game.

As expected the Zards dropped a deuce in Philly.

Wall scores 21 points on 26 shots(7/26).

Wittman still has his job this morning but I'm really wondering exactly how far this team has to fall before they do anything?14-20 in their last 34 with no real hope of it improving given the way the team plays.

Let Newman take over for the rest of the season and see if he can get anything better out of this bunch, can't really be any worse right now.

Beal turning into the new Nene it seems with all these injuries and missing time.

Good road win to keep the ship above water(for now).

Seems like the most relevant thread to ask this.....

Anybody else paying attention to the drama at ESPN980/570?

They demoted my man Andy Pollin to make way for "The Man Cave" ( @that name ) and then the show never debuted and Chuck Sapienza either got fired or resigned.

Speculation is that Snyder. (Who owns the station) or Allen canceled everything last minute.

What makes it particularly juicy is that Reid, who has been VERY critical of the Redskibs in the past, quit his job at the the Washington Post to do the radio gig.

Payback from Snyder or Allen? What happens to Andy and the Sports Reporters????

I'm out of market so don't really care as long as Mr. Tony has a place to record his show and provide his podcasts.

Check out the DC thread. Being discussed there.

****** HEY WIZARDS LOOK AT THIS *******

Boston Celtics assistant coach Jay Larranaga has declined to be a part of George Mason University's search for a head coach, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

George Mason had targeted Larranaga as one of its top candidates to replace the deposed Paul Hewitt, but Larranaga will pass on the chance to meet with university officials, sources told Yahoo Sports.

Larranaga has history, family ties and an affinity to the Atlantic 10 program, but is committed to Celtics coach Brad Stevens and Ainge – and a future as potential head-coaching candidate in the NBA.

Pretty terrible effort so far on this road trip and had it not for the Jazz not wanting to take the gift were given to them by the Zards they would be 0-3 and now staring at a Dubs beatdown tonight.Starters have just looked horrendous so I fully expect a 15-20 point loss tonight if not more.

On the bright side they still have a shot at the 3 or 4 seed to get home court advantage and will stay away from the Cavs and Hawks 1st round but in reality I can't imagine anyone thinking they have any realistic shot to get out of the 2nd round.

Worst case scenario is they win the 1st round and then keep both Ernie and Witt around next year which would be a huge mistake.

Weird series with the Kings this year. Not a single competitive game, really, even though they split - the Wizards stomped the Kings for 2 quarters and the Kings stomped the Wizards for 6.

I have no words for that 3rd quarter performance last night except to say it was pathetic in every way possible.Stayed up since the game was close at half to then watch them make 1 FG the entire 3rd Quarter and that was with around a minute to go in it.It was like driving by an accident and you know you shouldn't look but you can stop the urge and look anyways.

A vine of the last play that we all knew was coming.

https://vine.co/v/O3nVQ99iUwg

This team just looks so confused.Nene had no idea what he was supposed to do and doubled down by doing a dance before seeing his mistake and then trying to get to the rim.

ETA:Why wasn't Wall guarding Hill?Sure he had 5 fouls but with the game on the line you want your best defender on Hill.Webster and Nene were the tandem.

Wittman really does suck at last minute coaching.

Beal hurt again, the new Zards Nene injury waiting to happen over and over again.

Please let this be a sweep out of the 1st round.

Even worse- who cares if he fouls out with the game tied on the final possession? The game is almost certainly over as soon as the foul is committed. The odds of losing Wall for more than 2 seconds at that point were very slim no matter how it went down.

But even that might not have been the dumbest part. The dumbest part may have been Wittman saying Gortat (who blocked Hill's shot off an identical P&R earlier in the game) was off the floor because the Pacers had shooters out there and if he was there they would have given up a look from three. The game was tied, they were almost certainly going to shoot with less than 4 seconds or so on the clock, and the Wiz had no timeouts left, so all that mattered was whether the Pacers took the lead, not the margin. If they get a look that has a 35% chance of going in instead of a 50% chance, that's a good thing.

Hopefully the silver lining is Witt's childish behavior with the media and storming off the floor without watching the Wizards' final play is helping force Ted's hand after this season ends.

He hates Gortat for whatever reason and he clearly hates watching game tape because the Pacers run this play a ton at the end of games.

It makes no sense to not have your best rim protector in the game.Do you either want to give up a layup or a jump shot?I'll take my chances with the jump shot every time.

The ending was very fitting for Wittman. He has no grasp on this team and no idea how to fix anything.Still can't believe they signed him for 3 years and I also won't believe Ted will fire Ernie until I see it.They both need to go ASAP.

I know we're used to it but that was painful last night. April 6 can't come quick enough.
It's amazing having a well-run organization in the city. The difference is striking. After a couple minutes of reading about the Wiz this morning I read a scouting report on Wilmer Difo, whose development along with Trea Turner will allow the Nats to let Desmond walk and spend that $120 million elsewhere. And you realize that they're doing a great job planning for 3, 4, 5 years down the road even though they have a prime contender this year. Meanwhile, the Wizards could have had Jordan Clarkson- a guy who would have been a perfect fit for their bench scoring woes and lack of a quality 2 guard backup when Beal goes down- this season, but they traded his draft rights for cash. Not cap relief or even a trade exception. Just a little extra dough for Leonsis to throw on his gigantic pile.

I assume everyone saw this quote from Speights of Golden State, right?

"We knew if we hit them, if we got a couple stops they would start arguing with each other and quit. We went out there with a good mindset in the second half and we did it.”

Also, Nene bolted out of the locker room without talking to reporters last night so he could get his pic taken with the Argentinian national soccer team, who was at the game.

And Wittman shot back

"I don't give a crap what Speights thinks. We played them twice. What's he know."

Wittman downplayed the idea of using the "quit" quote as bulletin board material.

"These guys are grown men. They all heard. Social media you can't get away with anything today. Even if you didn't pull anything up on the internet, somebody is going to call you. It was everywhere. They know," Wittman said.

"I hope that's not what it takes. If it is motivation that helps, that's great. I'll send him a thank you card at the end of the day."

The coach continued.

"That's not what you rely on at this point, having somebody from another team say something like that. That should fall on our shoulders. We have to come out and play a total game. I don't need Speights to tell me that."
Admit it Randy,he was right. We all can see it :D

So if Wittman wins this series but gets swept by the Hawks does he still keep his job?

I"m glad they are winning now but does this really bode well if he sticks around?

I think so. This series is kind of changing even my opinion on Wittman. Kind of.

I blamed him for the stagnant offense, but in retrospect he was handcuffed to some degree by the roster he was handed. Of the ten or so guys who got 15+ minutes a game in the regular season, five are big men, only one of them has three point range, and that one is old and limited defensively. He just didn't have options available to spread the floor like this in the regular season on a regular basis because of the roster and because Pierce's age demanded that he be used sparingly. So I've switched to the "blame Ernie" bandwagon now.

Still, Wittman's not totally off the hook. I'm sure he consulted on the roster decisions. And the shot selection, especially Beal's, is an obvious and you'd think easily fixed problem. So maybe 70% on Grunfeld and 30% on Wittman?

Well I will be the first to admit I did not see that coming at all.Thought for sure the Raps would at least show up in the series and certainly not get swept but here we are.

Might have a good shot to take a few games from the Hawks if this run continues and make it a decent series.
