Returnmen (1 Viewer)

I'm not informed enough to know. For leagues that reward return yds, guys that return kicks can add 20-40 pts to their year-end total.

Will the following guys be used more, the same, or less in regard to their kickoff/punt returning duties?

Player (Kickoff return yds, punt return yds, total return TDs - 2011)

Sproles (1089, 294, 1)

Joe McKnight (1073, 26, 1)

Cribbs (974, 388, 1)

Cobb (941, 295, 2)

Antonio Brown (737, 325, 1)

Harvin (520, 0, 1)

EDIT - Topic subtitle mentions returning punts...I'm talking about punt returns AND kickoff returns

Who will be the kickoff and punt returners for each team this year? There's always a great thread about that, but I can't find it this year. Our league uses return yardage.

Which teams are set to have the top return men? Is there a ranking of these guys anywhere on this site? PR and KR ranking together and/or seperate?

Here is what I have found thus far on a quick Google News search

Dallas Cowboys: PR - Dez Bryant, KR - Felix Jones

Green Bay Packers: PR - Randall Cobb

New England Patriots: PR & KR - Julian Edelman

Philadelphia Eagles: PR - Damaris Johnson, KR - Brandon Boykins

Don't expect a lot of kick off returns- the NFL moved the spot of the kick off up 5 yards to deter returns and cut back on injuries.

Steelers are reportedly taking Brown off of returns and putting Sanders onto both units. He's had a few big returns his first couple years in spot duty.

No list or ranking on this site anywhere? Or an article perhaps?
There are so few return leagues(relatively speaking, of course), I really doubt it.There IS a thread on the IDP forum for kick/punt returners there, but it's defense only.

I'm not in any leagues with returners, but ranking them is still beneficial for team d/st and some leagues where you get return tds for your player.

McKnight was a major "big return" waiting to happen last year. Averaged 31.6 YPR on kickoff returns and had only 5 PR.

Edelman too was solid (10.7 YPR on 28 PR and 23.7 YPR on 12 KR).

1 pt per 20 return yards

1 pt per 10 rush/rec yds

0.5 PPR

Sproles finished as the #3 RB last year in this format. I noticed last night that Joseph Morgan was handling returns. Are they taking Sproles off of returns this year? I'd have to adjust the lil man down quite bit if so. Any homers with some insight on this?

I'm in a similar situation with 1/33 return yards and .6 PPR. I'd take a guess and say no and they just don't want to mash Sproles up in their first (and extra) preseason game. Therefore Morgan was used last night, but who knows. Heard some not good news on Adrian Arrington, so it looks like Morgan may have a higher probability of being active on game days, maybe returning punts and KOs if they want to ease the load on Sproles and have similar production? Now Cadet or that other scat back that played last night may factor in too?

This is pretty important as a lot of players in return yardage leagues tend to sleep on guys like Sproles and don't factor in what is the equivalent to nearly 400 extra rushing yards in my case (700 in your case), maybe a TD. Might move him from somewhere like 20th overall to 12th range.

No one's said anything about Sproles stepping aside around here anyway.

One thing to look out for is what happened in the 9er playoff game - Willis knocked Pierre Thomas out of the game and so to preserve Sproles' they subbed in Courtney Roby for him (who promptly fumbled, costing the Saints more points). Morgan and Scott didn't look too good in punt return duty last night either.

Would you bench the NFL's all-time single season combined yardage record holder?

Honestly, if I was the Saints it would be a tough call. He looks like he's going to play a big role in the offense again. Return guys are injured pretty often because it just sets them up for huge hits and concussions which is why you usually don't see teams using starting offensive or defensive guys as returners. Sproles isn't technically a starter, but his role has increased to where he basically has starter value. If I was the Saints coach, I would probably only use him on crucial returns in big spots/big games. I wouldn't risk his health having him do every return.I think the Steelers are in the same boat with Antonio Brown who is also a heck of a return guy, but now being counted on as one of the go-to guys on offense. I have him in a return yard league and kind of hope they keep him on returns, but think they'd be dumb to do so.

Sproles doesn't need to return preseason punts/kicks. No need to expose him to unnecessary risk, he gets his work in during practice. You'll prob see him return one or 2 during the 3rd game.

I went to Saint's training camp a few times this past week. He's definitely returning punts/kickoffs ahead of Morgan in practice.

Sproles and Harvin are the two who get criminally undervalued in return leagues. They each go from strong RB2/WR2 to RB1/WR1, but still get drafted a couple rounds later than they should b/c most publications rank them without the return yardage contribution.

Top 3 scorers in my KR as a designated position league last year were Brandon Banks (1), Darren Sproles (2), and Leon Washington (3). Brandon Tate, Josh Cribbs, and Randall Cobb were close behind.

Peterson had the most td's, but only 700 total return yards because he doesn't return kickoffs. The top guys had close to 1400 total return yards. Last year, the average was 2-3x punt return yardage to kickoff yardage for guys who do both. Before the "touchback" rule change, the ratio was approximately 5-6x. There has been a clear difference, but it's still a necessity to return kickoffs to be a difference maker in leagues where return yards matter.

Edited to add: In this league, when you start someone as a returner, you don't get points for position specific statistics.

Also, for those who remember his exploits from two years ago, Jacoby Ford is the starting KR/PR for the Raiders this year and the slot WR. He is also the primary backup to Denarius Moore.

Even if he stays in just the returner/slot role, Ford could be a pretty decent WR3 for fantasy.

And if Moore gets (stays) hurt, Jacoby could be a steal this year in return leagues and make a push as a strong WR2 or low-end WR1.

Each team page (http://subscribers.footballguys.com/2012/12teamreport-crd.php) has a section on punt kick returners. As of this moment what is showing for returners is based on mini-camps and OTAs. We also put out weekly Training Camp Updates that includes a special teams section. The Camp Update for the first week of camp is currently going through editing, I'm not sure the exact schedule for release but I imagine they'll be showing up in the next few days.

The special teams updates will make it back to the team pages as well, but when the Camp Updates start showing up, you might want to check the most recent one first as that will probably be the first place an update is available while being pushed back over to the team pages.

Looking at past years archive articles on the Footballguys site, it looks like the Returnerguys article typically debuts sometime in mid-late august.

Also if you click on the link I updated each teams depth chart for Kick/Punt Retuners. A lot will change in the next month as well with preseason and depth chart moves as teams try to get down to the final 53 man roster.

“I think we’re going to look at a couple of guys, but right now Harry [Douglass] would probably be the guy that is going to catch some punts and Quizz [RB Jacquizz Rodgers] will be the guy that will return some kickoffs."

- Falcons head coach Mike Smith

“We’re going to let them work on it from the get go. Obviously, we didn’t do it with Felix {Jones] last year because he was the starting running back and we didn’t do it with Dez [bryant]. This year, we think it’ll make a big difference. Both guys were top guys coming out of college…. The big thing is Joe [DeCamillis] thinks practicing it every day, getting Dez and Felix used to the blocking schemes, working on it every day, they’ll be better.”

- Cowboys VP Stephen Jones

"I think we're going to have a good plan with Percy [Harvin] this year. He is our number one kickoff returner. When we have the opportunity to use him, we're going to use him. If he's not back there for whatever reason, we're going to train two or three other guys to make sure that we have a capable backup and we'll go from there."

- Vikings special teams coordinator Mike Priefer

No Claiborne on returns in Dallas?

Giants are still undecided. Jernigan, Hixon, Randle and Wilson have all been getting reps at return duties.

Great work. I do think the starting KR/PR position changes more than any other between now and the beginning of the season though.

The Bengals position for example is wide open. Could be Brandon Tate again, but he's not even a lock to make the roster. Andrew Hawkins has also received a ton of time as returner in camp. Pacman Jones is a leading candidate for PR duties and Marvin Jones is another guy who has been taking KRs.

Tate has been the main guy I've been interested in seeing if he can have a meaningful role on offense and lockup return duties. Hard to say the book was wrote on him in his NE stay b/c many wr and moreso young wr can't seem to grasp their offense. He has good physical tools if he can ever learn/adapt to the pro game

McKnight was a major "big return" waiting to happen last year. Averaged 31.6 YPR on kickoff returns and had only 5 PR.Edelman too was solid (10.7 YPR on 28 PR and 23.7 YPR on 12 KR).
I'd have to say when McKnight got his chance to be the KR he wasn't just one of the best he was the best KOR in the league last year. dude is fearless/stupid as well, he was constantly taking out kicks that were damn near out of the enzone and always making it worth it. one of those situations where the coach is screaming "NO NO NO NO, ok go JOE YES YES YES, good job Joe". Joe probably will never be a factor RB but if he gets the ball in space and the field infront of him he can be very scary. Desmond Howard scary

Does anyone have the time to put together a ranking list of kick returners based on the touchback percentages of the kickers they will be facing? Would love to be able to predict games where a returner may get 4-5 returns vs. 1 or 2 due to a kicker with a big leg. Basically this would be a sort of SOS list for kick returners.

“We'll see how much [Jacoby Jones] is playing on offense. If he is playing a lot, he may be doing both, but he may not be doing every rep with both.”

- Ravens special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg

“They are all going to get a chance to be that guy. That is what’s great about the preseason. You give Javier a couple of reps and you give Devon a couple of reps. You give all the guys a couple of reps including Steve Breaston. He’s been productive in this league.... It will be whoever has the most production. It doesn’t matter if it is the same guy [handling punts and kickoffs] or if he’s big or small.”

- Chiefs special teams coordinator Tom McMahon

“I think the world of him. I think he’s a playmaker, he’s a chunk-yardage guy, and you have to get chunks in this league. If you look at every time he touches the ball in situations on offense, he got a chunk. Some of them have been called back and things like that. It’s hard to drive the ball against people in this league and you get chunk-yardage players, so it didn’t put me in any different position, I like it. It doesn’t affect anything. He will still be a punt returner, a kick returner, that kind of thing. Obviously it’s the head coach’s decision, but I think it’s a great idea personally....

Brandon and I meet on a regular basis. I stood on the table for the guy. He’s had some issues. He and I meet every day and go through that day, that night, that afternoon, where you’re going, who you’re with. I get good answers, bad answers. He and I have a pretty good relationship. I think he has really grown-up as a pro. He has grown up like a lot of guys do. Some guys at different stages in life, not just professional athletes, they get it, and right now I’m going to tell you, he got it. I think he is making better decisions. I think he is taking better care of his body. I think he is working harder. He’s in better shape. He’s in condition. He lifts. He gained weight. So I’m going to stand on the table for the guy.”

- Redskins special teams coordinator Danny Smith

Yeah, algo's are done. I don't like how subjective returns are (some coaches give the "stop" signal, others let guys return from the back of the endzone) but I used the numbers the best I could..

Thanks again for the updates Mike. When do you anticipate the returners will be updated in the training camp reports? Thanks!
