Revisited: Hoge's Crazed Rant re: Vince Young (1 Viewer)

Remember the guys in the offseason that were clinging to the Wonderlic and using that as evidence that Vince could never learn an NFL offense? He hit 8 different receivers this week after hitting 10 last week. That shows a pretty good grasp of the offense.

This is why you don't hire a guy who retired from the NFL because of multiple concussions.

I'm coming around on Young. He got off to a rough start, but over the past three weeks he's completed at least 60% of his passes and run for at least 69 yards every game.

Vince Young has the HIGHEST potential in the NFL in my eyes. he has everything u look for physicaly in a QB and the guy is a complete winner.

i cant wait to see where this guy goes in next years drafts.(esp dynasty)

Any way he can keep hating on him after that?

I don't think so. That guy proves more and more every time he opens his mouth that the NFL should regulate concussion injuries more closely.

Are we going to be subjected to these "lack of respect" posts every time someone offers negative remarks concerning Vince Young?
I think so. Apparently, there were a lot of hurt feelings when Young wasn't universally predicted to be great. :shrug:J
Not that, it was the tons of blind hatred against him.No one cares if he is predicted to be great, it is when he was consistently predicted to be a total bust and waste of a pick.

Hoge's comments on a guy in his first few starts were over the top idiotic.

He basically said "there's nothing I can see in Vince Young's skill set to make me think he will be good anytime in the next three years."

That is a full-on brainless comment for an ESPN analyst to make about a rookie QB when that analyst is supposed to know a LITTLE about NFL players.

He had already, and immediately thereafter, disputed each and every one of Hoge's comments on his skills - the comment about how Young can't run away from anyone was fully DeeDeDee (Mencia sux, but the deededee's a good one)

I think preseason predictions went like this....Akili Smith = Ryan Leaf = Vince Young. Hoge has been over the top weird degradating VY's progress as an NFL QB. Yeah, it hurt our Longhorn feelers, especially when we homers knew better. He is an unconventional QB, thats for sure, he does what it takes to move the chains & win games. Anybody has to admit the guy is fun to watch and the NFL is a more exciting place with him in it.

Joe, this is a straw man. It's not that young wasn't "universally predicted to be great" but he was a popular pick on this board to be a complete bust similar to Ryan Leaf or Akili Smith--and those are the people that these threads are directed toward. People completely discounted his college career and clung to a botched wonderlic as evidence that he would never be able to learn an NFL playbook. They posted articles indicating that Young wasn't "humble" enough to succeed in the NFL. Sixty-three percent of the people that voted in this thread voted that the NFL was covering up Vince Young's Wonderlic score through some nefarious plot. :tinfoilhat: Now, people come into these threads and argue "gee, you Young backers sure are sensitive that everyone didn't fall in love and universally proclaim him to be a future hall of famer." That's not correct and those arguments mislead people about the true nature of the Vince Young debates over the summer.

Sorry, I don't remember seeing it like that at all. Sure he had detractors and some thought he'd be a bust. That can be said for most every player in the draft. He was the #3 pick coming off the best college finish in a while. Incredible hype and excitement for the guy.

I remember the questions surrounding his eyebrow raising wonderlic score and how that went down. I remember right where I was when I heard the unbelievable news he made a single digit score. And the retesting and drama surrounding whether that was accurate and such. But I remember him being well supported by most with some that thought he'd be a bust.

A lot of this comes from the fact that Young critics called him "stupid", and/or said he should be shifted to wide reciever (still honestly one of the five dumbest things I've ever seen on a message board) and other borderline ignorant comments. There was just a lot of what seemed like actual hate for the guy, not just comments about his inability to play in the NFL.

This quote is really disingenuous. It wasn't just a matter of people differing in their opinions of Young's potential as a pro. The thing that annoyed many of us is how extreme and often personal the criticism became...as best exemplified by Merrrill Hoge.It is great fun to see some of these critics dance around and make excuses for him doing well or discount what he has accomplished. The rest of them like to pretend they were never that critical and that Longhorn/Vince Young fans just have thin skins.

This is possible the most detached from reality post you've ever made.

I believe Vince Young is a talent. It's becoming clear to the league that he is a winner. I can appreciate that fact that fans of Vince Young feel vindicated by his performance thus far. But all this "I told you so" and "guess what he said about Vince" stuff has gained the feel of a crazy, jilted stalker girlfriend.

Perform a search on this site and you will find that I was never a hater of Vince Young. I have alot of respect for his game- just as much as I had for Steve McNair.

You have proved my original point.Additionally, you seem to have taken this stepchild syndrome even a step further by calling me out as anti- VY. I clearly stated that he looks to be a winner and is talented. Where, in your warped mind, do you rationalize me being a Vince Young "hater"?

And Hoge's antics have absolutely nothing to do with that.

Hi slingblade,Sorry but your post is exactly what he's talking about. He said the "But all this "I told you so" and "guess what he said about Vince" stuff has gained the feel of a crazy, jilted stalker girlfriend." and that makes you assume he is a "hater" and that it "sucks being totally wrong"

The "I told you so" posts do have a little bit of the jilted girlfriend feel. Not just about Young, but about any subject.

For similar examples, peruse some of the Reggie Bush threads from back in the summer. Even the best kids coming out have their doubters. Someone disagreeing with your opinion about a prospect isn't "hating."FWIW, I'm thrilled that Reggie and Vince are becoming big time factors. The NFL can't have enough playmakers for me.
