I mentioned this in the Staff Roundtable:

Offseason coaching changes

Maurile Tremblay:

It looks like Art Shell may be replaced as the Raiders head coach (although that is an unconfirmed rumor at this point). What are the other teams most likely to make coaching changes, and who are the top prospects to fill any vacant positions?

Jeff Pasquino: I'll throw a name out that no one is mentioning for a possible head coaching job - the Ravens' defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.

He's been a coach for eight years with the Ravens, two as the DC (where he replaced SF HC Mike Nolan), and is the only assistant coach on the team that goes back to SB XXXV in 2000, where the defense was dominant. He's related to DC Rob Ryan in Oakland, both of whom are sons of the legendary Buddy Ryan.
...and now Adam Schefter is making the same suggestion as a dark-horse....from NFL.com:

A dark-horse candidate is Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, whose selection would make a ton of sense. The last three defensive coordinators in Baltimore -- Jack Del Rio, Marvin Lewis, Mike Nolan -- have gone on to successful NFL coaching careers, and these Ravens say that Ryan might be the most impressive defensive coordinator they've had.

That's becoming quite the coaching tree in Baltimore.

Ryan has installed an extremely sophisticated defense that, while risky and prone to big plays, in reality gives up very few. Granted, he has an experienced core of veterans with which to work but he has worked most of the team's recent draft choices and free agents into the mix pretty seamlessly as well. As far as NFL assistants go, he really should be one of the top candidates for a head coaching job.

As with Marvin Lewis, who has yet to create a good defense anywhere else, Rex Ryan seems unlikely to duplicate the Ravens' success elsewhere. The coach of that defense is, and always has been, Ray Lewis.

Hate to correct Shefter but if memory serves Jack Del Rio was never a DC for the Ravens. I think he was more likely the linebackers coach there.

I wonder why brother Rob Ryan isn't getting much love outside of the Raider organization. The job he did under the conditions he was working (ignorant coaches surrounding him, inexperienced players at key spots) I'm a little surprised not to hear his name more often.

Scarier for Dolphin fans is the light horse candidates:

With Cowher not in the mix, it looks like offensive assistant Mike Mularkey and defensive assistant Dom Capers will be. Mularkey coached the Bills, Capers the Texans, and both men offer even more options to Miami.
Levin = :goodposting: ;) fan.

I like Rob, but Oakland's special teams hasn't gotten much love. I think both Ryans have done a good job, and one could easily argue that Rob did more with less.
