Ricky Manning Jr. Busted - Assault w/Deadly Weapon (1 Viewer)

From today's Chicago Sun-Times

The man the Bears are counting on to solve their secondary woes has his own problems right now.

Ricky Manning Jr., whom the Bears signed to an offer sheet worth as much as $21 million Friday, was arrested shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday in Los Angeles and charged with assault with a deadly weapon after a melee at a Denny's restaurant left a patron unconscious.

Manning, 25, was bailed out of jail, and Los Angeles Police Department detective Robert Lewis said late Sunday that a court date has not been set. What is set is that the Bears will owe Manning -- a cornerback signed to fill the void in the nickel package created by the retirement of Jerry Azumah -- a big chunk of money Friday if the Carolina Panthers decline to match the five-year contract, as expected.

The deal is front-loaded to discourage the Panthers, who have a tight salary-cap situation, from bringing Manning back. With a roster bonus of $5 million this season, his cap figure for 2006 will be between $6 million and $7 million.

According to Lewis, Manning was in a group that attacked a man in the restaurant after teasing him for working on a laptop computer.

"The group began by making comments that the victim looked like a geek or a nerd,'' Lewis said.

The victim asked the group to stop and then complained to a Denny's manager before someone in the group punched him in the face. He then was punched and kicked by multiple attackers until losing consciousness, Lewis said.

The group fled the restaurant, but the car Manning was in was pulled over by officers just blocks from the scene in Westwood Village near the campus of UCLA, where he played in college. According to Lewis, the victim, whom he would not identify, regained consciousness and identified Manning as one of his attackers. Manning has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon because the attack involved people kicking the victim with shoes on, Lewis said.

A source said Manning has said he was at the restaurant but had no part in the melee. It is not the first time Manning has been arrested. He was charged with assault after a bar fight in the same area five years ago today. His record has been clean since joining the NFL.

Authorities are hoping to make more arrests in the incident.

It's another headache for general manager Jerry Angelo to deal with while he sorts through the Thomas Jones situation. As reported in the Sun-Times on Saturday, Jones has stopped participating in the team's offseason program, and agent Drew Rosenhaus said his client is receptive to a trade.

If the facts are true this kid is a grade A punk. Real cool picking on a "nerd" than beating him up with a fellow group of punks. That's just blatantly being an Ahole and if he didn't do anything but still allowed it to happen than he still registers a zero on the character meter. What comes around goes around and he just bought himself a whole lotta bad karma if he was involved in this disgrace.

Mockingly calling some a geek/nerd? What is this 5th grade? C'mon, this is your entertainment as a 25 yr old millionaire? Too bad this ahole won't see jail time.

Maybe Ricky was attracted to him. And teasing was a way of flirting. Then of course he had remorse for having "those" feelings for the guy so he beat him up.

Sounds to me like Manning was simply in the vicinity when this happened, because the article mentions a group of people several times. I just don't see Ricky being the ring leader on an attack on a customer at a Denny's in the middle of the night. However the fact that the victim identified Manning as an attacker raises a red flag. Ricky's previous arrest in the same area doesn't bode too well either, but I guess that's the past. Assault with a "deadly weapon", because the attackers were wearing shoes??!?! :o

I have met Ricky a few times. He did some appearances with our business. He never gave me the impression that he was "trouble", then again, how can you tell? I hope things work out for him. From what I know of him, he's a good guy and I appreciate all he's done for us.

LOL, nice pickup by the Bears...you got a real tuff fighter who can kick butt...

Too bad he he's not man enough to handle things by himself and has to bully his way w/ buddies in tow...what a punk!!!

He , like anyone else, has a responsibility to say stop and if they don't to leave with out them. Especially since I am sure they were part of his "crew".

My mom always said you're known by who your friends are. Even if Manning just sat and watched his boys unprovokedly beat someone half to death, that says a lot about him. These clowns are lucky nobody in the restaurant (assumedly) had a concealed carry permit and decided to save the guys life. Society isnt lucky, but Manning and his thugs are.

Yeah Wheelhouse he sounds like a grrrrrrrreat guy.
To me he was a good guy, which is why this is shocking to hear. My association with Ricky is from a business relationship. On those terms he was very poilite and thankful, etc. What he does outside of our business relationship is completely unknown to me.What puzzles me is that if the attackers weren't wearing shoes it wouldn't be assault with a deadly weapon? What's up with that?

And I bet the Hertz executives used to love OJ too. Maybe Ricky was afraid of being called a nerd if he stopped his boys from beating the dude.

Good point - I'm just sharing my impression of the guy.

Wow... that's just bizarre. You see college kids in hundred's if not thousand's of Denny's and IHOP's across the country late at night, particularly this time of year when finals are about to start up. It's not like this is an unusual occurrence.

How that progresses to a severe beating is beyond me.

I find it amazing that in 2006 anyone would be making fun of someone using a laptop, let alone on the UCLA campus with midterms this week. Maybe Ricky and his friends are just mad that other people can read.

If you kick someone with your shoes on with intent to injure them, it is assault with a deadly weapon. Its not how common the instruments (shoes) are, its their potential for damage. You can kill someone kicking them in the head with shoes- with barefeet you would probably break something on your foot before breaking somebodys skull. However even hands and feet can be classified deadly weapons in some states and situations (martial artists). Its mainly about intent and the potential to inflict fatal damage.

Someone must have kicked the victim. In those cases its A&B with a dangerous weapon (Shod Food). So yes, you are correct. If they kicked him with barefeet, it would not be A&B with a dangerous weapon. Simply A&B. If they were wearing shoes, and didn't kick him, then it would also just be A&B.

That, and he's eating at a Denny's? I'd think you could hang out at nicer places for his coin...

Maybe Manning Jr. was hanging with Christopher from the Sopranos over the weekend. After all, the hot head WAS in California also.

I'm not to worried about this right now.

Sure it makes you question the idiot's character, but it's not like Manning Jr. was singled out from the group and charges haven't been pressed yet. I can't believe there wouldn't be surveillance cameras in a Denny's knowing the type of riff raffs that end up there at 3AM in the morning.

Maybe it's just me, but the service at Denny's -- no matter what part of the country I'm in -- is the sloooooooowest of any chain restaurant. Not that that has anything to do with Ricky Manning Jr. and his gang of nerd-beating thugs.

I just can't fathom a guy who is set to make millions stepping inside a Denny's... just doesn't make sense to me.

It's like drinking Natty Light when you can afford something much much better that won't give you heartburn and a hangover.

maybe it was Ricky's laptop and he just wanted it back. You know, like Sean Taylor wanting his ATV back.

Well it's not like it was for his evening meal. It was probably after a long night of drinking and partying and they wanted some late-night pancakes. Not a lot of upscale millioniare type restaurants open at 3 in the morning.

Someone needs to tap this niche!! We have to stop the "ballers" from having to go to taco stands and Denny's after da club! :pics:

Filet Mignon at 4 am after the club lets out? Done.

Panthers will not match Manning offer

PAT YASINSKAS

4/24/2006

As expected, the Carolina Panthers will not match the Chicago Bears' offer sheet to restricted free agent Ricky Manning, team officials said.

The Bears signed Manning to an offer sheet for five years and up to $21 million on Friday.

Manning was arrested for assault in Los Angeles on Sunday morning and released on bail, police said.

As compensation for Manning, the Panthers will receive Chicago's third-round pick (88th overall) in this year's draft.

Thugs and punks like this in the league and Ricky Williams is facing a year suspension for possibly smoking pot.

It's absurd.

Actually, Ricky Williams failed multiple drug tests. Manning Jr. hasn't been found guilty of anything yet. And for every one of these stories, there are probably a dozen that get brushed under the rug - that never get reported and no arrests are made.
