Ricky Williams to play in the CFL? (1 Viewer)

The Argonauts are going to take a run at suspended NFL running back Ricky Williams.

The Argos added Williams to their negotitation list yesterday, a day after he was suspended for the 2006 season for violating the league's substance abuse policy for a fourth time.

All CFL teams have 35-player negotiation lists, which allows them to deal exclusively with players, even if they are under suspension.

Isn't it decriminalized up there?
No it is not decriminalized up here. Just don't tell Ricky that. I've got seasons Tix and would love to see run on the larger field.

He doesnt even smoke the ganj anymore anyways. He tested positive for an amphetimine (sp?)
If he plays in Canada this year, it may actually affect his "recovery" status with the NFL.I have someone I know who can find it out, and will ask him.

Bad move for Ricky...save the wear and tear. I'm not sure the Dolphins would be too keen on this...could mean a big time lawsuit for that 8 million.

From the Miami Herald:

"But his more immediate future remains cloudy. Under the league's substance-abuse policy, Williams is not allowed to enter the team facility except to meet with a treating clinician. After the appointment is over, he must leave immediately.

Furthermore, Williams is not allowed to play in any other professional football leagues, the Dolphins confirmed."

I wonder why he isn't allowed to play in another league

this sounds like a lawsuit ready to happen - one that williams would win i would think. the nfl can say you can't play in our league. there's no way they can say, you can't play in the cfl. they can refuse to re-admit him though, much like they are doing to onterrio smith.

Would seem that the NFL can not prevent an individual from making a living. RW's talent is football and he should be allowed to use that God given talent somewhere else if the NFL doesn't allow him to display it in their league. The NFL does not have jurisdiction over all of football.

It's not a problem of jurisdiction. It is that he owes the Dolphins money. If he decides to go and play in Canada, the Dolphins sue Ricky to get their upfront money back. If he stays and doesn't play, serving out his suspension, then the Dolphins don't sue.

Lawsuit waiting to happen if Ricky cared one bit, but I doubt it.
This issue has been discussed a lot here on the local radio stations, as you would expect. One thing that I think the Argo's coach or GM mentioned in an interview was that the Dolphins are actually somewhat for him playing in the CFL, to help him get back into/stay in shape. From the interview, the GM seemed to paint a picture where the only real sticking point was Ricky's desire to play. He seemed to think that the Dolphin's consent could be negotiated quite easily.

Seems to be in the Dolphins best interests to let him play since he's more likely to stay out of trouble that way and the NFL would be more likely to let him come back next year.

There was more speculation about this on both Sirius radio and NFL Total Access tonight. It seems Ricky would welcome playing in the CFL, and Solomon Wilcots opined that Nick Saban should allow Ricky to play, so he would not be rusty next year and to increase his trade value for the '07 season.

One of the guys on Total Access brought up the possibility of sending him to NFL Europe. It was a dumb idea, mainly because the NFL Europe season ends in 22 days. But do you think Ricky would volunteer to play for the Amsterdam Admirals for free? :excited:

He'd run his quickest 40 time ever trying to catch that plane to Weedville.

Guys we might be surprised to see that he might not burn the CFL.Some NFL stars came to Canada so far and no one really dominated the game .

What is most common is that they burn the CFL first and then go south .

Moon, Flutie there is a few more .

Ferragamo on the opposite could not make it in the CFL , it s different game .

Joe Horn played in the CFL. He was the best WR but he was not too good for the league.Damn...I really hope he doesn't sign with the Argos.

Adn just so ricky knows, we got the best stuff up here, and it flows freely everywhere, even though it's not officially decriminalized. :P

"Theismann rips Argos for Williams move

Joe Theismann

TSN.ca Staff

5/30/2006 12:38:31 PM

Joe Theismann, the NFL quarterback-turned analyst who got his start with the Toronto Argonauts, had some harsh words for his former CFL team on Tuesday after the club signed running back Ricky Williams over the weekend.

"This is a feeble excuse for the Toronto Argonauts to sell tickets," Theismann told Toronto's Fan 590 radio station. "I am embarrassed to have worn that 'A' on my helmet, to think that they would stoop to this level to sell tickets, to bring in someone who is not worthy of playing professional football."

William signed a one-year contract with the Argonauts on Sunday, allowing him to play football while serving a one-year suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy for a fourth time.

"He has insulted professional football players, he has insulted professional football, he has been suspended from the National Football League, he doesn't want to play, he's going to a place where his value will be limited," Theismann continued.

"All that said, Ricky is not a bad kid - he's just done bad things to a sport that I love. And it's a damn shame that the Toronto Argonauts would not show a lot more class and pass on somebody who has been a repeat drug offender. To me, it's an insult to guys who put on the uniform."

Football fans south of the border also got an earful of Theismann's remarks this week, as the former Washington Redskins star made similar comments on ESPN Radio.

"I don't ever want to be mentioned in the same breath as Ricky Williams as a football player," he said. "He's a disgrace to the game. The man doesn't deserve to play football."

Theismann, a fourth-round pick by the Miami Dolphins joined the Argonauts in 1971. He led Toronto to a 10-4 record that year and helped guide the team to the Grey Cup Final where they lost to the Calgary Stampeders. He later signed the Washington Redskins and led them to a Super Bowl victory over the Miami Dolphins in 1983.

Theismann works as a color commentator on ESPN's Monday Night Football NFL telecasts which can be seen live on TSN beginning this September."

he absolutely shreds him to pieces, and then..

:lmao:

I don't recall an NFL superstar RB ever going to the CFL in his prime like this. There's no reason Ricky shouldn't beat the everloving crap out of those guys. He's faster, stronger, and has better moves than anyone I see play in the CFL. I can't imagine a single DB in the CFL who could consistently break his stiffarm. I haven't seen the CFL LB who can catch him without having to turn his shoulders. Those extra ten yards should give him the room to turn the corner consistently (something he was doing even in the NFL), and when Ricky turns the corner he's just gone.I'd be very, very angry if I were a fan of any other CFL team.

sorry if :honda:, but I found this funny:

CFL | Williams not worried about Theismann's comments

Published Tue May 30 4:13:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Jeff Darlington, of the Palm Beach Post, reports Toronto Argonauts RB Ricky Williams isn't worried about Joe Theismann's latest harsh assessment of him. After all, Williams said Tuesday, May 30, he knows an apology will be forthcoming. After practice today, Williams noted that Theismann has often been critical of him in the past, consistently bashing anyone who is willing to associate with the controversial star. However, Theismann reverses course when he sees Williams in person, the player said. "Every time he says something, here's what happens: He says a remark about me that's offensive, then when he has to (broadcast) one of our (Dolphins) games, he comes in and apologizes and says, 'I'm sorry,'" Williams said. Williams indicated that he would accept an apology from Theismann.
