Where do we fall in this mess?  I feel like many of us are rendered silent because we can't fit one narrative or the other.  I think Trump will be the republican 2020 nominee and I'm not sure where my vote will land.  I did vote Trump because Hilary was a nightmare.  She was all that is wrong in DC and we thought Trump would "drain the swamp". It only semi happened but I'm ready to move on.

In 2020 I have my eye on a D or two, but how do I trust the Dems to give them a fair shake?  I lean conservative on most issues, but I do support a lot of liberal initiatives as well. The far left scares me and I need the pendulum to swing back middle.  I need MSM to be honest and I'm not sure we can ever recover....

Usually I back the Republican nominee but vote Libertarian.  This time I'll probably back the Democratic nominee but vote Libertarian.  This assumes the Democrats nominate somebody reasonable.

Who would you guys say is a reasonable Democratic nom?

Which of the potential noms would be a nonstarter?
I consider myself rationally ignorant on the current crop of Democratic candidates.  We are a full year away from the Iowa caucuses.  It's silly to get attached to anybody at this point.  Nobody is a nonstarter or starter for me right now.

Good to hear (although I'm guessing Hillary was probably on the list for many typical Republican voters years out).

How exactly did it semi happen? I’m genuinely curious to hear your thoughts.

In the interest of full disclosure, Hillary was on my hell-no list for at least the past 15 years.  She's an outlier even among Democrats in that regard.

I’m hoping and praying for a strong independent candidate...  totally disallusion with r and d at this point.  I don’t feel either party represent the majority of their constituents but are pandering to the far extremes.  Sad...

Biden, Klobacher, Sherrod Brown, Michael Bloomberg all seem fairly moderate, no?

For me, it’s joe.  He’s a mess with grabbing women and saying some inappropriate things but I believe moderate...  this would be a scanner moment here but I would vote for joe vs trump...

I am more in line with Kasich. The best case scenario for me would be for Trump to get impeached and Kasich becomes the GOP candidate over Pence. But I realize even if he were impeached the party would run with  Freedom Caucus type candidate. I am hoping the Dems run with a moderate candidate such as Biden or Klobuchar. Not thrilled with them but just can't go the Freedom Caucus route

All I can say is be careful.  😯

Andrew Yang interests me.
Unless you write him in, I don’t think you’ll get a chance to vote for Yang in the general election.

In the primaries, are you considering voting for a Democrat?

I’ve always been registered without a party affiliation, but I’m considering switching to Republican before the next set of primaries. I’d rather vote for Weld over Trump than vote for Klobuchar over O’Rourke. I think the distance between the first set of candidates is much greater than the distance between the second set.

Andrew Yang interests me.
If you like this guy listen to the Joe Rogan podcast from a couple week’s back.

I had barely heard of him (although I was most aligned with him just ahead of the other Dems in one of those issues test).

He’s pretty much one issue at least that’s all they talked about  - universal living wage - but he was very good on that subject and was engaging.

I don't know much about Klobuchar, but this has been an okay 30 minutes. She has my attention.

Wow okay. I like him too. What about his platform is appealing to you?
His basic income makes sense to me. Life skills in High schools, Gun safety reform, College affordability reform, and such.  I like the idea of a non lifelong politician making a run and getting in.  I'm still for a "drain the swamp" promise and think this guy has some of the experience needed to make a change.

On a lesser issue, he supports paying NCAA athletes which is pretty overdue in my mind.

I have some Republican friends who strongly dislike Donald Trump. They tend to fall into two camps:

1. Those that think that Trump is so awful they will support the Democrat no matter who it is just to get rid of Trump- they’ll worry about the rest later.

2. Those who could support a centrist, pro-business Democrat, but if it’s a leftist or socialist of the Bernie/AOC Type, they’ll vote for Trump again, reluctantly.

Most of those I know fall into the 2nd camp...

I would like to get behind someone who is anti war and against killing babies right before they are born.  I know there is at least one who is for the first thing.

Those in #2 are going to convince themselves that any Democrat is a socialist

Comey had to go.  He screwed up everything he touched in 2016.  I wanted all the protection for the major players in DC to go and I think we're getting closer to it.
To be fair, Trump fired Comey because he would not pledge loyalty and/or shut down the Russia investigation. If he had, Comey could still be in his former position.

I want to think that the reaction to Trump would be a pragmatic, common sense candidate that can build on the vast common ground we all share.

Instead the reaction seems to be doubling down on Trump or going further and further left.

I know Trump scares me, but somehow Ocasio-Cortez and company scare me more.  I think I would rather put up with the social offenses of the right than accept the fiscal offenses of the left (obviously both are relative).

I'm a republican and I cannot stand the democratic party--the further left it goes, the more disillusioned I get with the whole lot of em.

And yet, I think Trump is an utter abject embarrassment.   Sucks to be me right now

Umm...fiscal offenses?  The right is giving you those as well.

Also, Ocasio-Cortez can't run, and her company isnt quite as big as you think.

I included the relative part.  The not even subtle push for socialism, the push for higher taxes, the idealism (not pragmatism) driving the platform.

I am under no illusion that the right is fiscally sound, but I will side strongly with them versus the above.

I guess I am being idealistic as well, hoping to return to the relative middle ground we had for so long.  Where one side didn't push so far that the other had no choice but to push further the other way.  The middle ground feels lost.

Agreed...that's a complete non-answer to avoid saying Trump outright.

And I'm where IK's at....so freakin' early that I have no clue.  Though I will acknowledge that I have never considered the "vote against" approach before.  Now, I am considering it strongly because Trump is such a vile disgusting human being.  He could share every single one of my political objectives and I still wouldn't vote for him.

Once you perform a coup on the Supreme Court, there really isn't a middle anymore.  Pick your side.  Do you want to wipe your ### with the Constitution while wrapping yourself in the flag?  Or do you want to wipe your ### with the flag while wrapping yourself in the Constitution?    I'd like to respect both, but that ship sailed with Merrick Garland.

Sucks to be all of us.  This country is going down faster than Monica Lewinski on the Hindenburg.

I feel like I belong here as an independent who sways strong fiscal conservative/smaller government, but the fact that 80-90% of republicans approve of Trump currently has  me feeling like a unicorn. I just can't wrap my brain around how actual Republican ideology being replaced by Nationalism/isolationism has become a thing. I'm supposed to point to the deep state when our president has dubious relations that are affecting our global allies and our democracy itself? I'm supposed to be afraid of actual dialogue with the freedom caucus about solving health care/global warming? "Wall" is supposed to light my fuse? I may be too enlightened for this party.

:goodposting:

I feel like the government is in all the areas of our lives they don't need to be while neglecting the places where they could really help.  Of course, in today's GOP, "help from the government" is an absolute no no unless it's to institute eminent domain to build a stupid wall.

Not sure why anyone would side with the GOP fiscally right now...they are a disaster.

Push for tax reform over the corporate welfare is not really a push for higher taxes.  The socialism stuff is such played out crap...at least understand what the push is and what socialism is...don’t just fall for the crap man.

Now I do that some middle ground would be nice.  My fear is Trump and the GOP somehow convince enough people that they will move to the middle on some things and portray the leftbas radical socialists ckmeoletely (its already worked in a number of people).  And the left won’t help themselves by appearing too far left.

The anti Trumpers better figure out a counter punch.

AOC and Bernie are self described socialists.   That has never won an election, in fact its one of the quickest ways to lose one.

The candidate could be one of the more conservative picks like Biden or O'Rourke, and Fox News will still be calling them the most liberal ever, like they do for every Democratic candidate. That is why I am not convinced that anyone that would consider voting for Trump again can be saved since even if you don't believe the Russian stuff he is still woefully incompetent to the point of being unqualified to be president. Once I can see as a mistake, but to even consider doing it again after these last few years is just searching for an excuse to vote for him again. Once the right wing media turns their eye of sauron on to the lead candidate they will waffle and think "hmm, I did not realize they were a socialist trying to destroy America".

While I don’t agree that he is “ woefully incompetent”, I do agree that you are not changing the minds of any Trump supporter.

The Dems are best served going after those demographics where they actually have a chance.

Warren, Harris and Sanders are not the answer imho.  They capture demographics that are already anti Trump.  Perhaps they are going after white women.

Great point - the right has done so well fiscally up to now.

How can anyone listen to him lie and just speak and come to this conclusion baffles me.

The counter punch is to continue to correct people who make this claim.  That is not how they self describe.  Also, they both have won elections describing themselves as Democratic Socialists (which is different than the bolded).  Until people want to be honesty and not just associate what is going on with their old view of socialism...they may have trouble, but is that on them, or the people who continue to push that kind of stuff.
