matthews is a slot player -- cooper is not
even on 5 targets the guy can do some damage, considering where he's being drafted.
I wouldn't rely on him as a wr2, but there probably isn't better productivity way down there
I am not sure if you like Matthews or Cooper but you are right Matthews is the Eagles slot receiver this year and starts in 3WR sets. However the role Matthews will assume is the role that was held by Jason Avant last season. Avant managed only 447 yards last season despite playing all 16 games. Matthews role early on this season will not be a big one and will only increase if Cooper or Maclin gets hurt. Or when Maclin gets hurt.
In the first half of the 3rd preseason game it was the only time the Eagles had all 3 receivers playing at the same time in the preseason. During that first half, including plays that involved penalities, Maclin had 9 targets, Cooper had 7 targets and Matthews had 3.
That ratio seems about what you can expect to me. Cooper is severely undervalued considering he is a starting receiver in a high octane offense who has a established rapport with the the starting QB and is often going completely underdrafted or drafted very late. He is not a sexy pick but he is a excellent late round pick.
