Professional Football Player. He played the halfback position for both the All-America Football Conference's and National Football League's Miami Seahawks, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Cleveland Browns from 1946 to 1955. He attended Louisiana State University for one year before transferring to Tulane University as part of a United States Navy training program. in 1943 and 1944. In 1945, he played football for a military team at the Naval Submarine Base in New London, Connecticut. He joined the new All-America Football Conference's Miami Seahawks in 1946, but was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers that same year. He went on to play for the Dodgers for one and half years before being traded to the Cleveland Browns in 1948. His tenure with the Browns continued until 1955 (In 1950, the Browns went from the AAFC to the National Football League). During his tenure with the Browns, he was an integral part of the team that won 2 AAFC Championships (1948, 1949) and 3 NFL Championships (1950, 1954, and 1955). He was also First-team All-Pro in 1951 and was named to the NFL Pro Bowl team twice (1951 and 1952). He retired after the 1955 season. During his playing career, he had 540 rush attempts for 2,210 yards. He also had 171 receptions for 2,874 yards. He also scored 41 touchdowns during his career. He later became an assistant coach for the Browns from 1963 to 1968. He left football for good in 1968 and went back to Ruston, where he worked with one of his sons in a general contracting business. He was later inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in 1984. His son, Bert Jones, was a quarterback who played 10 seasons in the 1970s and 1980s for both the Baltimore Colts and Los Angeles Rams and won the NFL's most valuable player award in 1976.
