Drexler was an unreal 2 guard... just not Jordan. those portland teams in the early 90's were great... if the #1 pick would've been Bowie and the #2 pick for portland would've been Olajuwon I really think a different team might have dominated the early 90's... Drexler + Olajuwon would've been better than Jordan + Pippen I believe.Been a rough 15 year stretch for Dr Jack. Prostrate cancer, melanoma, bladder cancer, brain tumors, lung tumors, and finally marrow syndrome.
That 1977 championship was one of the all-time great comebacks in finals history. They were down 2-0 when late in game 2 Darryl Dawkins took down Bobby Gross on a hard foul. DD tried to get Gross to square off with him - he was 5 inches and a good 50 pounds bigger - when Maurice Lucas came in and slapped his head.

Portland absolutely dominated the rest of the series. 76ers had a tremendous collection of talent, but the Trailblazers were a team.
Ramsay was a brilliant guy. It's a shame he already had drafted Clyde Drexler the year before when the 1984 NBA draft came around. The lost the coin flip (no lottery then) with Houston and Olajuwon went #1. Big dilemma - take the reigning NCAA player of the year (also a 2 guard), or the best big man available. Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan might be looked at as the worst pick in the history of sports. Believe it or not, it made sense at the time.
RIP Dr Jack.
Think about this, too. Jim Paxson had been to 2 straight all-star games as a 2 guard ('83 & '84). Avergage over 21 ppg and was one of the best pure shooters in the league. Drexler didn't start as a rookie but was obviously going to be a stud. Fat Lever and Darnell Valentine were the point guards. The one thing Portland was not going to do is draft another guard. Nobody had any idea how good Jordan would be. Charles Barkley, Sam Perkins, Mel Turpin - those were all guys the Trailblazers were considering. Bowie had missed two seasons in college with leg injuries but seemed to have most upside.Drexler was an unreal 2 guard... just not Jordan. those portland teams in the early 90's were great... if the #1 pick would've been Bowie and the #2 pick for portland would've been Olajuwon I really think a different team might have dominated the early 90's... If the Blazers truly believed that Drexler was on the verge of being a stud, then they wouldn't have traded for Kiki Vandeweghe right before the 1984 draft. (Remember, Drexler originally came into the league as a small forward.)Think about this, too. Jim Paxson had been to 2 straight all-star games as a 2 guard ('83 & '84).
