James Best -- who famously played bumbling Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane on "The Dukes of Hazzard" -- died Monday night at age 88.

Best passed in a hospice facility following a brief illness and complications from pneumonia, a close friend told the Charlotte Observer.

In addition to his role on "Hazzard," Best appeared on several classic shows, including, "Gunsmoke," "Mod Squad," "I Spy," "Bonanza," "Perry Mason" and "Rawhide."

Best formed an acting school in the '70s where he taught the likes of Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Lindsay Wagner, Farrah Fawcett and Quentin Tarantino.

Some might remember Best being in Burt Reynolds' Hooper back in the late 70s. Classic bar fight scene with Burt, Best & friends vs Terry Bradshaw's gang of rowdies.

"Lessee here .... there's seven of us, and twelve of you. Looks like you all got to get back to Houston and get some more guys."

Hooper is outstanding.

RIP Rosco.

I like the story about him rescuing Flash from the pound, then training him over the summer for season 3 as his partner.

Loved Rosco and Flash. They would have horrific accidents - flipping the car 10 times - but Flash never got so much as a scratch.

I saw him not too long ago on some Hallmark Christmas movie. He looked good, still had that great thick head of hair.

He seemed to be the only cast member who wasn't bitter about his time on the show. Wopat and Schneider have not gotten past the financial battles they had with the network. Catherine Bach also doesn't seem thrilled with her experience.

So I said to Alvin [the dog trainer] one time, "Go in and ask them to double your salary and get your money for Flash." And he said, "Well Mr. Best, they will fire me." And I said, "No, if they fire you I will pay the difference for the rest of the series. So you've got a win-win situation here." And so Alvin went in and sure enough they threatened to fire him. I said to the studio, "Do you want to fire Alvin and replace the dog?" They said, "Well, that's what we'll do." I said, "Well then, you'll replace Rosco P. Coltrane because if you fire either one of them, I'm gone." Well, Alvin got the screen credit [and] he got more money.
