Percy is one of my favorite soul singers ever, and he has passed . My dad played him non-stop when I was growing up, and that got on me and my sibling's nerves, but then we all grew to love Percy. I saw him live a couple times over the last 20 years, and he still sounded great. RIP Percy

This is my favorite Percy song, and it has to be his original version.

I loved that show. I saw Percy Sledge perform several years ago at Myrtle Beach. He was in great voice, and very entertaining. I bet he regretted up to the day he died for letting two of his old bandmates take songwriting credit on "When a Man Loves a Woman" to be nice, when Percy was the main songwriter. Oops. 74 isn't very old. I heard today he had liver cancer. He was one of the best voices in soul.

His catalog is worth digging into a bit if all you know is "When A Man Loves A Woman" and like 60s soul. "Take Time To Know Her" is my favorite.

And if you like Sledge, check out James Carr. Another second tier soul singer who was fantastic, though he never had a hit anywhere near as big as Percy did.

Percy wasn't no second tier soul singer. He was 1st tier!! Percy and James Carr both did great versions of Dark End of the Street.
