Risky, but is it worth taking suspended / injured studs in redrafts? (1 Viewer)

In a typical redraft, when would you consider taking the suspended and injured players? I'm specifically talking about Gronk, Gordon and Blackmon.

I took a risk yesterday in a 10 team draft with Gronk @ #41 (over Gonzo, Witten and VD), Gordon #81 (over Boldin, L Moore, and Miles Austin), and Blackmon #121 (Edelman, Broyles, Hobson). I figured by mid-season I should have a stellar team. there is a strong possibility that this team starts weak, and with only 4 teams making the playoffs, that could hurt. Of course, the real question becomes who replaces these guys in your lineup at the start (for me it's Rudolph and either Tavon Austin or Jeffery).

The real questions are:

1. When would you consider taking these guys?

2. How many would you take? It's one thing to take Gordon late as a WR4, but to take all of them might be a little too risky.

3. Would format matter much (best ball vs. standard)?

4. Does playoff format matter? If all of the teams make the playoffs, there's little reason not to take the "risk", while in a total points league or limited playoff teams, perhaps it's not worth missing out on a few games.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't take a bunch of guys like that in the same draft but yea, Gronk, Gordon, Blackmon are great picks if you can cobble together .500 without them until they are playing.

What about Jones-Drew? Nelson? Cobb? Garcon? Bradshaw? Robert Griffin?

All have injuries or are coming back from serious injuries.

Format is incredibly important. And not just for this topic, but for any draft. Best ball format is a game changer.

In standard scoring typical format 12 team leagues I'll take Blackmon as my WR5, and Gronkowski in round 5. I'm not particular interested in Gordon where he is being drafted, which may or may not be a mistake, but I'll live with it.

I view most of these situations the same. How serious is the injury? Is it the type of thing to linger and could cause them to miss random games here or there? See: Hakeem Nicks, Le'Veon Bell, Ahmad Bradshaw Do they have a legit injury history that makes them almost certain to miss some time? See: Danny Amendola, Darren McFadden, RG3, Garcon. Depending on the answers to these varies on how far under their ADP I'm willing to draft them at personally. I strayed away from Bradshaw as I assume he'll miss anywhere from 2-6 games this season and I'm not really sure how productive he'll be otherwise because the Colts are a pass first team. I'd have been happy to draft Nicks or Garcon as I think even at their ADP if they play 10-12 games this season you're getting a steal for their expected production while healthy.

With suspensions? Just estimate their normal production without those games. Blackmon, and Gordon for example... I'm more than willing to draft them at their current ADP because it's taking their suspensions into account and when they get back they should perform above that ADP for the remainder of the season. With someone like Von Miller it gets a little more sketchy being that he's suspended almost half the season. But I still think he's worth the draft and hold if you can get him as he'll be one of the best edge rushers in the NFL when he returns.

I did a redraft draft last night. Wanted to go RB heavy (start 2 RBs and we have 2 flex spots). Landed Spiller, Rice, Gore and Sproles (as well as a QB and TE) before looking at WR. Landed both Josh Gordon and Blackmon (and Antonio Brown and Britt). Cant wait for week 5.....

These guys have value.
