Colts | Mathis agrees to long-term extension

Thu, 15 Jun 2006 14:28:09 -0700

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports Indianapolis Colts DE Robert Mathis has agreed to terms on a long-term contract extension with the Colts. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Because of the particulars of the contract, and how it relates to the recent extension to the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, the deal likely will not be signed until sometime next week. However, according to sources Thursday, June 15, while there are some details of the deal that have yet to be completed, the agreement is a solid one.

The Colts really like this guy (what's not to like) and they've made some adjustments by making him a starter (at least right now). He should be on the field even more than last year, and his more than proved his playmaking abilities last year.

I'm a little surprised the Colts gave Mathis a contract this early in the season. Mathis is supposed to be nearly an every-down DE this season. If I was Colts management, I would have liked to see Mathis play all three downs before giving him money as a three-down player (note: I don't know the specifics of the deal, but I'm guessing it's full-time $$$).

If I'm the opposition (...and Manning has not tatooed me for 21 pts in the 1st quarter), I would be running the ball nonstop. The Colts have two of the smallest DE's in the League, not to mention one of the worst LB's corps (June, Brackett, Gardner).

The Colts finished #3 in total defense last year. However, they were only #16 vs the run. Manning will need to score early and often to keep the opposition's RB's off the field. Fortunately for the Colts, they play in a divison with non spectacular RB's (HOU, TEN and JAX).

Could be a shot for Sanders to jump up for plenty of run support.

I think that's the plan of every team that plays IND if for no other reason just to keep Manning off the field, but if you get behind like most teams did last season it's kind of hard to run time off the clock when you're trying to catch up.
