Rockies sign two hurlers (1 Viewer)

12/19/07 Colorado Rockies

Signed RHP Kip Wells and LHP Mark Redman to one-year contracts.

Both these guys can be just as effective as Silva and probably aren't making as much combined.

put a few extra balls in the humidor when these guys are getting the start. Wells wasn't bad as a reliever late last year but was just horrible in a starting role.

Um, no.
Silva defines mediocre. Redman is "crafty" and can still get hitters out, and Wells is one year older than Silva with a 4.43 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP, Silva has an ERA of 4.39, and a WHIP of 1.36. Pretty similar.
Kip Wells hasn't a decent year since 2003. Same goes with Redman. Wells at least throws grounders at a somewhat-decent clip, however there's one thing I noticed about Wells during his time with the Cardinals: his pitches have very little break. And he gets shellacked for it. He also has a reputation for being a bit of a mentalcase and going to Coors isn't going to do him any favors.Redman doesn't strike anyone out and he allows a LOT of flyballs. Very similar to Denny Neagle, only with less ability to strike people out. And we all know what happened to Neagle at Coors.Silva, meanwhile, has grown somewhat flyball prone over his career, but now he gets to play at Safeco, where flyballs go to die.Look, I'm not saying that Silva is a great pitcher by any means. He's the definition of mediocre. But both Wells and Redman suck and the Rockies will need to catch lightning in a bottle twice for either one of them to even be remotely effective. At least Silva gets helped out by the park he's playing in. Wells and Redman are like Christians getting fed to the lions.BTW, here are the ACTUAL career ERA's for the 3 pitchers:Silva: 4.31Wells: 4.63Redman: 4.75HTH

2007 VORP numbers (courtesy BaseballProspectus.com):Carlos Silva: 35.5 (#46 for all pitchers)Mark Redman: 5.2 (#315)Kip Wells: -9.4 (#689)Combined: -4.2Note: VORP = Value Over Replacement Player. It measures the contribution, in runs, of a player beyond what a backup (or replacement-level) player would produce for an average team given the same amount of playing time. VORP is adjusted for park and league, and position. In essence, Silva had a decent year last year while Redman and Wells (particularly Wells) had awful years. Silva gets the big bucks, Redman and Wells get Coors.

These 2 guys suck. Silva is solid
Silva was solid in 2005, horrible in 2006 and league average in 2007. He's an inning eater who should get a slight bump from getting half his starts in Safeco, but that's about as far as I'd go.By the end of his contract in 2011, I wouldn't be surprised if he's no better than Wells and Redman are today.

Kip Wells shouldn't be in the league any more, I bet his ERA will be about 6.50 . As for Silva, isn't he really close to signing with the Mariners?
