Rod Coleman injured (1 Viewer)

For the second time in a week, the Atlanta Falcons have lost a key defensive starter to an offseason injury that could sideline him several months. This time, it's standout tackle Rod Coleman, who suffered a ruptured right quadriceps that required surgery Monday.

The team's starting "under" tackle and a Pro Bowl-caliber defender, Coleman will likely miss the entire offseason training program and training camp and there is a chance he might not be completely rehabilitated by the start of the regular season.

The injury, which Coleman acknowledged to several teammates, occurred over the weekend in a boating accident.

Jonathan Babineaux would be the favorite to take over.

saw this in the yahoo article

Coleman's injury means that Jonathan Babineaux likely will take over at "under" tackle next to right end John Abraham.

Not only does he lack the size and strength of Coleman, who leads all NFL interior linemen with 50 1/2 sacks since the start of 2001, but Babineaux still faces felony charges of animal cruelty stemming from the death of a pit bull two months ago in nearby Gwinnett County.

and this:

Chris Houston, a second-round pick, will likely take over at right cornerback in place of Jason Webster. Jimmy Williams, drafted in the second round last year, is moving from cornerback to free safety, a job that Chris Crocker seems to have lost.

Geez. Poor Falcons.

In DT-required leagues, like I am in, getting those pass rushing defensive tackles is big, and Coleman was a stud in that format. I thought Babineaux was a nice possibility to take over that role for Coleman, who is getting up there in age, now it sounds like he has a suspension coming.

Anyone know the success rate on players coming bck from a "ruptured quad"? I know one thing, 'ruptured' is not a good word.

And how does one rupture a quad on a boat? :goodposting:

Ahman Green did much better than expected from a similar injury last year. I don't think anyone else has returned anywhere close to their previous form.

This makes it even more interesting that Petrino passed over Okoye in the draft, eh?
Maybe. But I think Jonathan Babineaux >> Chauncey Davis and believe Jamaal Anderson can join a pretty elite group of strongside ends. Definitely surprised that they didn't bring in another DT if they knew about this before Sunday. Maybe they've a good idea that Babineaux won't be suspended.

This happened before the draft?

It was reported Monday early afternoon as having happened "recently". He has already been diagnosed and had surgery and the story was given to the media. It either happened this weekend and they patched him up post-haste or they knew.

Well. Some of you know I'm not very high on Okoye. If this happened before the draft and Petrino still passed on him, that might speak a little to what I've been saying. I do like Amobi more as a fantasy guy than someone who will help an NFL team, but I have trouble making that make sense. He is a good pass rusher. He is a bad run defender. He tires quickly.
