Romo to the Pro Bowl? (1 Viewer)

mr. furley

Footballguy
heard this last nite on my way home on FOX radio.. then again on the local show... then AGAIN on 670 the Score this morning and YET AGAIN on the Dan Patrick Show.

what in the world is going on??

American sports fans are waaaaaaaaaaaay too quick to pull the trigger on greatness. this is ridiculous. the guy deserves some credit for being 3-1 but.. let's be serious here.. the ####ING PRO BOWL????????????

If he keeps playing at the same level, he'll not only make the Pro Bowl, but he'll start.

Now that McNabb is out, who is left in the NFC? Drew Brees, Marc Bulger, and Rex Grossman are the other contenders, but I think Romo has outplayed all of them. The question is whether he can keep it up.

Brees seems to be a lock but the next best producers in the NFC are Vick, Kitna, Bulger, and Grossman perhaps. Favre, Eli Manning, Delhomme, Alex Smith? If Romo keeps this up and there's no reason to believe he can't then his QB rating should be enough to bump him over the other choices.

if he gets hurt this week does he still warrant consideration?

i mean, he'll still be top 2 in passer rating and have a .750 winning percentage.

point is, shouldn't we wait for the next 6 games to play out before we start anointing this guy (as Salisbury did yesterday) "one of the top 3 QBs in the league." ?

Brees is a legit MVP candidate, Romo is not.

Romo may get picked as an alternate, but realize he's startingfrom behind the gusy who started on the ballot.

To say Romo has outplayed Brees at this point is the most ######ed thing I've heard this week.

Bulger would have been a shoe in 3 weeks ago, but def not anymore. Same with Grossman 6 weeks ago.

With McNabb out and Hasselbeck playing as many/less games than Romo, Id say Romo is deserving. Grossmans played terrible in 3 games and Romo has yet to play terrible.

I think he's deserving...definitely should be there, no.

He's not deserving yet. He's only started 4 games... I could understand if all 5 of the games he's played in were absolute lights out performances, but really only 3 of those 4 could be called great performances. His first game was mediocre as expected, and one of his starts was an average performance.

The argument against is that he's done it for only 4 games vs Brees keeping that high level over the course of 10 games. Doesn't take anything away from Romo's work so far but length of excellence counts as much, IMO, as the numbers themselves. If Romo keeps this up for several more games, then I have no problem looking to him for a nod.

as noted above, mcnabb isn't going & bulger far from a lock with rams downward spiral...

i don't see how it can be ridiculous that romo might be outplaying brees when he is 4-1 as starter (lets not forget he could easily be 5-0 if not for van der jacked up) and winning at a better clip...

sure DAL probably has superior team (defense, anyway), but NO has some decent weapons with deuce/bush two headed monster & colston, horn & henderson... & its not like DAL has a stellar OL that is obviously a lot better than NO... not much doubt in my mind romo would be putting up monster numbers (maybe better than he has in DAL), too, with that array of skill position players...

DAL was not doing nearly as well with bledsoe (maybe on way to .500 season or worse), so clearly romo has been a difference maker...

there seems to be a consensus that if romo continues to play at this level he has as good a chance as anybody in NFC (except perhaps brees, which i agree with maurile is debatable) to go to pro bowl...

if salisbury (not that i am an apologist) said he is going to pro bowl, a reasonable interpretation would be that if he is injured and misses rest of season he isn't going... but if we don't assume he misses large chunk of time, & plays at this level... he is going...

some people are more naturally sceptical & need to see it longer... i've been saying for a few weeks i think he is the real deal, & i didn't see anything today to dissuade me of that position...

* romo is coming off a week in which he outplayed manning (probable leader for league MVP with LT), and he is 29 of 31 in second half in last three games combined... hard to imagine how he could be playing at much higher of a level...

Maurile, I can't believe I need to do this, but here goes:Romo is not ahead in every category that matters. There's a little one that's called games played. Romo has had zero value fopr the Cowboys in a number of their contests this year. Based on your numbers above, Romo is ahead on a number of rate stats. However, he hasn't played as much as Brees and probably has less value over replacement for the whole season, dedpening on how you define replacement.Romo's sample size is still small, and they have played some bad D's. Is there a chance that he makes the Pro Bowl - certainly.Realize that while the Cowboys suddenly getting solid is a major national story, the Saints being this good is another major story. And Brees is a big part of that.

not to take anything away from brees... he is having a fantastic year, and is a legit MVP candidate, though i think if vote were held today LT or manning would win...

but its not like romo has been doing this for 1-2 games... he has been extremely impressive going 4-1 (and could have had chance at 5-0 if kicker sends game they lost into OT)... i see no reson to think things will be much different in his 6th start... or his 7th? how many games is enough where at some point we say he is having a great season, too, that is pro bowl worthy...

i'm not speaking for maurile, but in comparing the stats, doesn't mean brees isn't pro bowl worthy... its very possible they both go, & nothing about his stat breakdown & comparison is inconsistent with that view...

you yourself posted the context in which maurile was prompted to post it... earlier post insinuated it was preposterous to even put them in same city, let alone neighborhood...

seeing numbers side by side indicated to me that not only is it NOT an absurd connection, but it in fact eminently sensible to compare them... looking at how close they are, how could one not? again, its not like romo has just done it for 1-2 games...

maybe reason to think romo is suspect & not as proven over as many games is the bad defense argument... but its not like all of the next 5 opponents in NYG, NO, ATL, PHI & DET sport stellar defenses?

another important stat is not just games but wins...

in almost same time frame in which romo has been surging, brees (after more than commendable 5-1 start) has been 1-3... and this is somewhat of a what have you done lately league... a component of pro bowl voting (if not only or most important) is that more recent game probably weigh a little heavier... if brees continues to lose games (or be at helm while TEAM loses) and romo continues to surge in win column, it isn't too big a stretch to think romo may begin to close gap in pro bowl voting...

whether he has enough time to start i don't know, and as i said above, i think both will go...

:goodposting: Some just can't see past the Star. We here locally have been screaming for Romo since Pre-season over Bledsoe. Now people are seeing what we have all along. This guy is good and most are just waiting for either a TO breakdown or a Romo struggle. This guy is good, very good ask Sean P, his first choice at QB was Romo but Parcells said no; he then picked up Brees.Maybe after the 3rd he'll make some a believer.

Please notice that my first post began, "If he keeps playing at the same level . . ."I wasn't contending that Romo has played more games than Brees. I was contending that on a per-pass-attempt basis, Romo has played better than Brees.

Yes, aside from the fact that Romo apparently isn't on the ballot, Romo and Brees are the two obvious choices from the NFC this year (since McNabb is out). The AFC is a lot more competitive, with Manning, Rivers, Palmer, Carr, Brady . . .

it is clear that he should be going at this point considering the competition in the nfc is weak. yet he is not on the ballot. that's why voting should take place later in the season.

who's in?

I'm not a Cowboys fan, but I am a Romo fan. I haven't been this excited about a young QB since Bert Jones and John Elway.

Edited to say that I don't own him in any league, but I wish I did.

The weaknesses haven't been exposed yet...give it time...
enlighten me...
He holds the ball out like a loaf of bread - there is one flaw.He usually steps up into the pocket before he scrambles - that can be gameplanned by good teams - there are 2.He isn't perfect, but the sky is the limit for him.IMO IF HE CAN KEEP THIS PERFORMANCE LEVEL UP - I think he goes to the Pro-Bowl - after all, it is just a popularity contest - but whether he will start or not is debatable.IMO Brees has to be the starter right now.

I would just like to apologize to Tony Romo and the whole Romo family. I probably shoulda have waited until AFTER facing you in FF this week to question your Pro Bowl worthiness.

Please show mercy on me by convincing the rest of your FF teammates to go in the tank on Sunday/Monday nite so i can at least have a shot at the win and holding on to 1st.

Thank you.

He also holds the ball too long - a few times against the G-Men today, he got an earful from Parcells about that. He is risking sacks or grounding calls. Tossing the ball away while inside the pocket before being in the grasp is usually OK. Tossing it away when a DL has his arms on you whie you are inside the tackles is usually grounding, even if the ball flies out of bounds.

Yep.Specifically it looked like he got reemed in that last play before the half. Dallas was in FG range with about 15 seconds left. They did not have a timeout. They decided to take a shot at the end zone, and Romo was scrambling around breaking tackles before throwing the ball away. If he'd been sacked it would've cost them 3 points in a very close game.

someone (think it was Pat Kirwan, don't quote me on that) was saying that it typically takes NFL teams about 5 games to catch up to QBs.

so guys like Romo or Grossman might look like world-beaters for the first couple games but after they get those 5 on tape Defensive coaches can begin to pick apart their weaknesses and better plan for how to beat them.

be interesting to see how true that proves to be.
