Ron Meeks fired by Jim Caldwell in Indy (1 Viewer)

PFT is reporting that they have heard that Caldwell has canned Ron Meeks as DC. Although they are adding it is not "hard news", they also say they don't doubt their source.

Apparently the transition from Dungy to Caldwell isn't going that smoothly.

I find this to be a very surprising move considering Caldwell's own lack of credentials. Letting Special Teams Coach Russ Purnell go was a no brainer especially considering his contract was up, but this move is a bit of a shocker. Does this mean Indy is dumping the Tampa 2 Defense?

Very interesting.

I personally think the defense could use some improvement.

Also like that the new guy is taking charge.

My guess is that Dungy was more on the passive side when it came to coaches.

Chris Mortensen also reported the owner had to persuade OC Tom Moore to stay. The new guy is taking charge I guess but his track record is a lot more spotty than Meeks who was even being considered for some head coaching jobs. The funny thing is that in the playoff game they lost it was actually their offense and special teams that let them down. All things considered the defense played a pretty good game.I personally think the Tampa 2 is losing its effectiveness though. I don't know if this report is true whether it means they are dumping the Tampa 2 or just Meeks. Their current personnel is suited to play the Tampa 2 and a transition to a different defense would be a work in progress and in the meantime the Colts D could regress for a while.

Romeo Crennel is out there...you won't find a better DC.. :towelwave:
Indy runs a cover 2...Crennel knows the 3-4. Doesn't seem like a good match personal wise. Also, I believe Crennel is taking the year off because he's having some surgery (and collecting his paychecks?).

Tomlin was a cover 2 guy.Lebeau is the 3-4 guy.Combine the two = #1 defense in the NFL.Not saying the Colts would have near the success that the Steelers have had, but the two schemes are not incompatible.

Not surprised that he wanted to establish that it was "his regime" and made a move to shake things up. If it's true that Moore wanted to leave, that's bigger news imo.

Apparently they are holding off on announcing this but Meeks is making no secret about it at the Senior Bowl.

Initial word is they plan on keeping the Tampa 2 and to me this move now makes no sense. Meeks knows the Tampa 2 as well as anyone if you are going to keep that defense then why fire the guy who is the most experienced in the league at running it?

I guess we'll have to wait and see how exactly this plays out.

I have a feeling they are either going to promote from within or perhaps hire Herm Edwards if and when he is fired in KC. In fact my guess is they have Herm Edwards in mind, he knows the Tampa 2. That could be what the Colts are waiting on.

Officially Meeks resigned according to Colts.com. Same diff and all - but it is official and not just semi-official.

Herm Edwards, you are being paged.

Sorry Colts fans, I know that is not really what you want to hear, but no one should be surprised if it happens.

Edwards was a long time friend with Dungy from Tampa Bay days, wasn't he? Does he have any relationship with Caldwell?
