Roseanne Barr tweets racist comment; her show is canceled (1 Viewer)

This post is a good illustration of two concepts:

1. the watered-down definition of "blackface" to suit PC culture.

2. conservative trolls who are motivated more by exploitation than by outrage.
:lmao:   There's so much wrong in this post.   At least your alias Squis liked it in less than 5 minutes

Feel free to contribute to this forum by articulating an opinion once in a while, instead of just saying "WRONG" or "IRONIC" along with a rolling smiley.

I defended Megyn Kelly from day one and I stand by my belief that the definition of "blackface" should not be watered down by PC culture.

This was not blackface:

It was her own hair and her skin was barely darker. Was meant to portray a  "beautiful African woman" for Halloween, not meant as a caricature of African Americans or to ridicule them.
Previous discussions here said it's never acceptable for a white person to put anything on their face to darken it and portray a black person.  And she's awfully quiet for just portraying a beautiful African woman.  LOL at her trying to cover up her previous mistake.  But I don't blame her after she went after Barr and others.

There are people saying she's wearing blackface there?? That's the first I've seen that. If you think she's wearing black face in that picture, step forward right now. This will be a great litmus test for intelligence

I don't think I said that exactly, I think it depends on the context and what the intent was. If it is to ridicule or caricature black people then no, it is never acceptable.

And there are many blacks on Twitter who have no issue with Behar, some examples

There is a difference in Joy Behar dressing like a black woman and someone doing blackface. I'm also tired of white republicans trying to school black people on racism. She showed this pic a few years ago on national tv and no one, including the republican had a problem with it.

Sorry to break it to all of you people thirsty for Joy Behar to be kicked off of The View, but this whole blackface thing is the biggest reach... her skin was barely darker and she had her own hair? Like damn Ariana Grande has darkened her skin more..

The fact that maga nuts think THIS is #blackface is the problem!! Have you even researched the history of #blackface?! Do you know WHY it’s a problem?! When your privilege becomes a handicap, it’s time to check it! #joybehar

Note to racist ***...Joy Behar IS NOT in blackface and as a black person I AM NOT offended by this. You DO NOT get to tell us how to feel! THIS IS NOT FKN BLACKFACE!!!! How bout y’all do some history on blackface first before pathetically attempting to call it out. #JoyBehar

Well, thanks for contributing an actual opinion. It is appreciated.

As for your apparent belief that Behar is comparable to Roseanne, you couldn't be further from reality on that one.

Behar apparently dressed as a black person one time at an event many years ago that was not widely publicized and did not happen while she was employed by whoever owns The View. (And I say "apparently" because I can't tell if she's actually dressed as a black person or if she's just dressed as Mrs. Roper.) There's no evidence that Behar's actions intended to hurt or attack anyone.

Meanwhile, Roseanne publicly attacked and insulted another person while she was employed by ABC.

ABC did not fire Roseanne for her racist actions from 20+ years ago, just like Behar shouldn't be fired for her actions 20+ years ago.

And by the way, I don't think that Roseanne should have been fired for her tweet(s). I think that ABC knew what they were getting into when they hired her, and they should have adjusted their strategy and tolerance levels accordingly. I also think that there is an element of mental health discrimination at play. But I respect ABC's right to run their business, even though I think that over the long-term it was a bad business move.

I think for comparison you have to post an Al Jolson picture....

Ok, serious question. Would Soul Man be made today?
I think so, it was an impersonation to get a college scholarship, not ridiculing African Americans or their appearance, and it turned out a learning experience for the main character (particularly being stereotyped instantly by people without first getting to know him).

[...]

Mark decides to apply for a scholarship, but the only suitable one is for African-Americans only. He decides to cheat by using tanning pills in a larger dose than prescribed to appear as an African-American. Watson then sets out for Harvard, naïvely believing that blacks have no problems at all in American society.

However, once immersed in a black student's life, Mark finds that people are less lenient than he imagined and more prone to see him as a black person instead of a fellow student.

[...]

Mark declares to his professor (Jones) that he wishes to pay back the scholarship and do charity work to make amends for his fraud. When asked what he has learned, he says that he realizes that he could have changed back to being white at any time and so does not really know what it means to be black.
