Former Cowboys safety Williams going to Bengals

Posted: May 6th, 2009 | Steve Wyche | Tags: Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, Mike Zimmer, Roy Williams

The Bengals have agreed to terms with former Cowboys free safety Roy Williams.

The Cowboys released Williams, once regarded as one of the fiercest safeties in the NFL, after last season.

In Cincinnati, Williams will be reunited with Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, who coached the Cowboys’ defense when the safety had some of his best production.

I remember listening to Rick Gosselin right after he got released saying that he wouldn't be surprised if no one signed Roy. Guess he was wrong, but still, the fact it took two months for a 28 year, old five time "pro-bowl" safety to get signed shows how little intrest there was out there. Too lousy in coverage to play at DB and not a good enough tackler to play LB.

Perhaps every team but the Bengals realized that the on the field play of that dirty SOB never warranted even one pro-bowl.

Correct me if i am wrong but isn't he a SS? I would think so because he coverage skills flat out suck and he was usually in the box.

mighty have fallen?

most over rated player, ever possibly. typical over hyped cowboy player
He was an impact player early in his career. He just got soft, lazy and too rich imo. Yes definately overated later on in his career.
None of that makes up for his penchant for trying to repeatedly injure guys with his horse collar/leg whip combo. Not a player that a fan of either the Cowboys or the opposing team (should have) wanted on the field.

Finding religion didn't seem to help him either.

I dont like the fact we play this horse collar-er twice a year now
Well maybe Hines and him will cheap shot each other out for the season and neither of us will have to worry about 'em after that.-QG

I am not condoning what he does on the field, but if he played in the 70s, we would be lauding him as one of the last, great tough guys.

What else is funny is that the Bengals put a lot of stock in their two young (talented) safeties-Marvin White and Ndukwe. So Williams probably won't even be close to a starter barring injury.

Say what you want about Roy over the past several years, but he was simply amazing his first 2 years in the league. Nobody hit harder then him those 2 years.

Sounds like a pretty cheap contract with loads of incentives. They also said other teams were offering more money but he liked the fit in Cinci (yeah, right)

This is one of those outrageous statements only spoken to get people talking, when not even the person who said it really believes it. Sure, he's been overrated, but obviously, someone was going to give him a shot.
