Redskins signed Roydell Williams, former Titans WR.

Any thoughts? camp fodder? worth a shot?

My take: He hurt his knee(IIRC) and couldn't get back in shape quick enough to make the Titans roster so they worked out an injury settlement last year.

I thought he looked good in 07 and with their lack of quality WRs I was annoyed with their lack of patience with him.

Part of the lack of patience could have stemmed from David Givens the WR they spent a bunch of money on from the Pats that got hurt and they got precious little results for all that money. It could also have been that they simply thought he wouldn't fully recover.

Roydell got deep in the preseason and showed pretty good speed here N there. I can not recall seeing him run across the field(just straight or semi straight routes) last preseason and his lateral speed and ability to cut after the injury was a concern. Still I felt like he was coming along and they just pulled the rug out from under him.

I think everyone will expect nothing and he'll do OK somewhere if not with the Redskins. I would say he's borderline starter material(if healthy) but as depth I think he'd be quite useful for a number of NFL teams if he is healthy.

At times, he reminded me of former Giant WR Chris Calloway

He runs the most atrocious routes ever. He is good at running to the open spaces and catching the ball with no one on him. And from time to time he gets some YAC as long as he catches the ball with no one around him, has time to gather himself, turn upfield, and gather some speed before anyone notices he's caught the ball. Otherwise, he's a WR4 until Kelly and Thomas show they can play.

anyone read anything about him from camp? curious
So far he's not having the easiest of times. Though it has absolutely nothing to do with him, his QB's have been throwing him some bad balls...from Campbell over throwing him, Brennen under throwing him, to Collins over throwing him...He has a legit chance in making the team as the #5 WR, if one of the young potential guys don't spark. The #5 WR will have to be able to play some serious ST though, so if he wants to make the team...he needs to show that he can contribute there.

Thanks.I'm wondering if his "wheels" are OK. Just...if you happen to read/hear of him running and cutting well, please give me a headsup. He could get another job(team) in preseason and may have a brief window to contribute until last year's rooks are ready, then it's done. Once those former rooks are ready, Roydell's career could be over if he doesn't show something.

I think that part of the reason the Titans didn't keep him around is that they were unhappy with his toughness in terms of coming back from injury. Basically they felt he should have been doing more physically at a time when he wasn't.

I believe there was a game against the Colts 2 seasons ago where it was late in the game and the Titans were driving to win, Vince Young puts a clutch pass right on his chest and he drops it costing them the game. I sort of think that had a little to do with it as well.

FYI Bri and anyone else interested - Roydell Williams just had surgery on finger (pinky) that was hurt a day or two ago in training camp. He is expected to be out anywhere from 3-6 weeks...ouch!

R. Thomas Rests as O Line Gets Banged Up

The Redskins rested several players on Tuesday morning with more bumps and bruises flaring up now as the two-a-day training camp grind starts to take its toll.

Offensive guard Randy Thomas was rested with a sore knee. Thomas, who had arthroscopic surgery on the same knee this offseason, "felt like when he tried to really anchor and put a load on it, it was a little bit abrasive so we held him out today," Redskins Coach Jim Zorn said.

There is no timetable on Thomas's return, but Zorn said he did not expect it to be long.

Stephon Heyer left practice after getting his left knee rolled during goal line drills and Zorn called it a "bruise" and said he did not know the extent of the injury or whether Heyer would have an MRI.

Mike Williams was also rested with a groin injury. "He's got a little muscle pull," Zorn said.

Second-year receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly were mostly rested during practice, as well.

With Roydell Williams out after undergoing surgery on his pinkie finger, several wide receivers have increased their workload and "they've got sore legs right now, too, so we held a couple out," Zorn said.

According to Zorn, Williams likely will not be able to run for three weeks and Zorn speculated that the injury would be a four- to six-week setback.

Center Casey Rabach (calf) also did not finish the practice but Zorn did not seem overly concerned with the "muscle aches" across the line

thanks

odd so long for a pinkie. Tape it to the other finger if it means your career.

odd that he had such a heavy workload that the others are sore, with two being held out from it.
