Rules for free agent pickups (1 Viewer)

What’s the best way for a league to handle free agent pickups?

I’m in a league where free agent pickups cost ten dollars (real money) to be collected at season’s end. I’d like to change this because I think it encourages struggling teams to give up after a certain point in the season. For example, when the last-place team in our league lost Stephen Gostkowski, he decided to play the rest of the year without a kicker (figuring he was not going to throw good money after bad). This ended up having an effect on the standings.

Any thoughts and opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

I'm a fan of blind bid waivers. I do not like real-money systems for the reasons you stated.

1. Lower the FA fee to $1-2

2. Implement a rule that requires full line-ups and set financial penalty for not doing so

3. Weekly payouts for overall high score so the last place team still has something to play for

That's how I handle it anyhow - with good results. If your $10 FA fee is to generate a larger prize pool just raise the entry fee somewhat to compensate for the drop in FA revenue.

 You should also consider changing the draft slots for the next year to reward the teams not in the money who did the best thus encouraging them to keep putting their best lineup out there and replenishing injured players. So in a twelve team league where four teams make the playoff the draft order for next year would be5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,4,3,2,1 [order of finish]
