This would be an excellent hire. In the Browns thread, I reviewed Holmgren's work as GM with the Seahawks, and concluded the franchise rushed to a decision to strip him of the GM title. The short version is Holmgren brought in star players like Shaun Alexander, Matt Hasselbeck, Darrell Jackson, Steve Hutchinson, etc., and then was stripped of the GM role in January 2003. Most of these players would not emerge into stars until a year or two after the change was made. Holmgren is underrated and would be my top choice.

Jim Brown says Browns owner Randy Lerner met Tuesday with a 'great football mind'

Was former Packers and Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren, above, the 'great football mind' meeting with Randy Lerner on Tuesday? Jim Brown knows but isn't saying.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Browns owner Randy Lerner could be stepping up his efforts to land a new head of football operations.

At a luncheon Tuesday, Jim Brown, who holds the title of executive adviser with the club, said Lerner was interviewing somebody to turn around the Browns' fortunes.

"At this moment, right now Randy Lerner is meeting with one of the great football minds in this country," Brown said in remarks prior to and during the luncheon. "And if things work out, that person will come in to run the football side of the Browns."

Brown would not disclose who it was. When somebody asked if it was Mike Holmgren, Brown responded coyly, "You said it . . . and I heard it."

Brown made his remarks at a luncheon held by Our Lady by the Wayside, which presented him with the organization's Starlight Guardian Humanitarian Award.

Holmgren, the former Green Bay and Seattle coach, has been rumored to be No. 1 on Lerner's wish list to hire a "serious, credible leader" to reorganize his football operations.

An NFL source close to Holmgren said he was unaware of a meeting with Lerner, but did not discount it could happen.

The source said, however, that Holmgren intends to wait until the 2009 season is over "to see how the dust settles" before making a decision on his future.

Lerner contacted Holmgren a year ago, but Holmgren told teams he was taking the '09 season off. He coached in Seattle for 10 years after seven seasons in Green Bay. He took both teams to the Super Bowl, winning one with the Packers, and losing one with the Seahawks.

For the first five years in Seattle, Holmgren held the joint titles of president and general manager, along with coaching the team. He was stripped of much of his authority in 2005 when Tim Ruskell was hired as the franchise's president and GM.

The NFL source said that Holmgren wants to wait until after the '09 season to determine whether he wants to coach, serve as a football czar a la Bill Parcells -- or do both.

"I think that's what's so difficult for him to decide because he has a full palette of things he can choose from and I don't think he knows yet exactly what he wants to do," the source said. "I know that he does want to come back. He just doesn't know in what capacity."

If that is the case, Lerner may have to wait until after the season to compete for Holmgren's services. In previous statements, the owner seemed intent on adding a football overseer as soon as possible to get a feel for what coach Eric Mangini is teaching and trying to accomplish before recommending changes.

Brown said he was pulling for Mangini to succeed, but said of the 1-8 Browns, "It's not a respectable product."

Efforts to reach Lerner and Holmgren were not immediately successful.

"Inside track" is a strange choice of words - sticking to the horse racing analogy the more accurate phrase would be "Holmgren is getting put down".

I think they are still paying Romeo, how many years did Mangini get?

What a great gig..sign a 5 year deal and get canned after the first season.

Mike Holmgren tells Seattle radio station he'd love to interview for Browns role

By Mary Kay Cabot

November 21, 2009, 5:14AM

Mike Holmgren would love to interview with the Browns for an unspecified role.

Updated 1:45 a.m.

Former Seahawks and Packers coach Mike Holmgren said Friday in an interview on KJR 950 AM in Seattle that he hasn't talked to Browns owner Randy Lerner yet, but admitted he'd definitely be interested in joining the organization in some capacity.

"I hope it's true -- someday that we get a chance to talk, yea, I have tremendous respect for Mr. Lerner,'' Holmgren said on his regular Friday appearance on The NFL Show. "Their team is struggling just a little bit and I absolutely would love to talk to him about working there. But until that happens, you'll be the first to know.''

Holmgren was not asked about which role he'd prefer -- president, general manager, or coach -- but said he's attracted to rebuilding projects.

"It takes a tremendous amount of energy, but there is a certain appeal there,'' he said. "There's something in my personality, too, that taking on those types of projects -- that kind of gets me going. But there's a lot of work to do.

"The important thing, I think, going into any organization is that all of the principles, all of the decision-makers are pointed in the same direction, with the same motives, the same desires, and then you have a chance. In the NFL, as you look around the different teams, I'm not sure you can say that about every team and it shows.

"The teams that are successful from ownership to management to coaching, there is a singleness of purpose. There's enough credit for everyone. No one gets territorial. It's just good -- and it shows on the field.''

He said that would be a prerequisite before he'd consider hopping off his motorcycle and back into the NFL.

"In the case of the Cleveland Browns or any of the teams that are struggling, that question has to be answered first before you even have much of a chance.''

Holmgren was responding to a question about Browns consultant Jim Brown suggesting at a luncheon on Tuesday that Lerner may have been meeting with Holmgren that day.

"At this moment, right now Randy Lerner is meeting with one of the great football minds in this country," Brown said the luncheon. "And if things work out, that person will come in to run the football side of the Browns."

When asked if the person was Holmgren, Browns said, "You said it . . . and I heard it."

Holmgren said of Brown, "He's one of my all-time favorite guys.'' He also said, "I'm very flattered by my name being tossed around like that.''

Lerner has said that he won't be commenting on his candidates or the hiring process.

Homer????

I can't see it. Much better teams out there. Why go into that cluster #####. Cleveland would be lucky...

In response to the rumor and purported debunking thereof that Charley Casserly, former Texans and Redskins G.M. who now works for CBS, could be a candidate to take the reins in Cleveland, a league source tells us that Casserly is "definitely" interested in the Browns, and that the Browns are "definitely" interested in Casserly.

There's a chance, of course, that the team's interest in Casserly might arise from a desire to broaden the pool of potential hires so that the focus doesn't continue to fall on former Packers and Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren.

Regardless of whether Casserly or Holmgren or someone else gets the job, the first order of business will be to decide the fate of coach Eric Mangini. So what will the new boss do with the other seven hours and fifty-five minutes of his first day on the job?

Total speculation on my part. However, I really think after the Cowboys flame out in this year's playoffs-this is the job he will take. Jerry is VERY high on Mike and there was already tons of speculation last year that it could happen. Mike will see what opportunities are out there before making any decisions IMO.

Mike Holmgren insinuates no meeting in Cleveland

On his weekly radio show on KJR-AM with Dave Mahler and Hugh Millen, former Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren did not flatly deny a meeting with Cleveland owner Randy Lerner earlier this week, but he insinuated that there hasn't been a summit with the Browns boss. At least not yet.

"I hope it's true some day that we get a chance to talk," Holmgren said to Mahler's question.

The topic arose because earlier this week former Browns great Jim Brown was speaking at a luncheon when he said Lerner was meeting at that moment with one of the great football minds. Someone asked if it was Holmgren, and while Brown didn't confirm that, he said, "You said it, I heard it."

When Holmgren was asked whether a meeting with Lerner was fact or fiction on Friday, he continued, "I absolutely would love to talk to him about the possibility of working," Holmgren said. "But until that happens, you guys will be the first to know."

Outside of Cowher (and this isn't going to happen) I would love to see this - the Mangina hire was worse than bad. This guy should be no hire than coordinator.

Scenario #1

Holmgren could come in and run the GM/offensive side of the ball. Fire Mangina, then bring Romeo back (since he's already on the payroll) as defensive coordinator.

Scenario #2

Heck, you could even put the Romeo/Weiss combo back in action after Charlie's impending firing after the loss to UConn today.

Signed,

Sources tell News 4 Sports that Gruden was the Bills top choice to replace **** Jauron.

A highly-placed Bills source confirms the team did have back-channel conversations with someone close to Gruden. But the former Bucs and Raiders head coach declined the Bills interest, saying he's happy in his current role as analyst on ESPN's Monday Night Football. Our NFL sources say the team "went after him hard," but could not convince Gruden to return to coaching.

I think Holmgren as Czar and Gruden as HC would be about as could as any Browns fan could wish for. Would give a reason to hope.

I think Gruden waits another year though.
