Rumor: Tom Cable unlikely to be back in Oakland (1 Viewer)

By the recent standards of the Oakland Raiders, head coach Tom Cable has made real progress this season: The Raiders are 7-8 this year after winning no more than five games in any of the last seven seasons.

But apparently that progress isn’t enough.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Sunday NFL Countdown that Cable is unlikely to return as Raiders head coach in 2011.

The Raiders called Schefter a “false rumor monger” when he reported that they would fire Art Shell after the 2006 season — and then they proceeded to fire Art Shell after the 2006 season. So don’t be surprised if the Raiders deny this report as well. And then don’t be surprised if they backtrack on their denial.
You would think that Cable has earned a new contract... I mean I don't think he is a stud head coach but he has been good enough and has gotten the team to play hard for him.

It really depends on who they can get. If they can get somebody who can work with Davis (Gruden, Rob Ryan), Cable is expendable. He's been an alright coach. He gets them to play but they are very inconsistent. Some games they look like they are contenders and others they look like pretenders. I wouldn't be surprised if Cable just get demoted.

Makes sense. Oakland is finally starting to make progress. We must put a stop to that.

I'm sure there are multiple Super Bowl-winning head coaches banging Al's door down.

There has to be somebody excited about all that personnel. There is a lot of talent on that team. They have 1st/2nd round talent at QB, HB, WR, all over the OL, a rotation of them at DL, at LB, CB and safety. And they are still struggling to win. The Raiders are a better job than most of the possible openings around. More talent than Dolphins, Texans, Broncos. And they have an owner who really wants to win.

And remember, no coach has won a championship with two teams so getting a Super Bowl winning coach is not as important as you think.

No decent coach wants to work for Al Davis. I hope to be proven wrong.

:lmao: The thought of Gruden going back to Oakland is one of the funniest things I've read all day.

Maybe Al Davis needs Gruden to stand up to him. And Gruden needs Al Davis to get another shot at a head coaching job?

Gruden certainly does not need Al Davis to "get another shot" at a HC position...he can literally pick his coaching job/destination if he were inclined to leave his job at ESPN.

Yeah, Gruden can have any job he wants. He was the only coach in my memory to be traded for multiple first rounders, which sounded absurd at the time but he won the Bucs a ring so obviously he was worth it. Dude doesnt need Al the grouch

According to longtime San Francisco reporter Nancy Gay, the Raiders are "intrigued" with ex-Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels as a replacement for Tom Cable.

Gay also passes along "word from Alameda" that Al Davis won't pick up Cable's contract option for 2011, a scenario already reported as "unlikely" by Adam Schefter of ESPN. According to Gay, current Raiders OC Hue Jackson also intrigues Davis as a head coaching candidate. Cable must be informed by January 18 whether his option will be exercised. Right now, it's not looking good.

it does seem odd to me that Cable would be out, especially since he went 6-0 in the division and Al seems to love beating those teams as much as he loves "proving everyone wrong" by plucking a guy out of obscurity to do it...

And I don't think Chuckie needs Al to get another HC job considering he's the youngest coach (only 47) out there with a super bowl ring not named Sean Payton (4mos younger) or Mike Tomlin (38)

:goodposting: If the bolded part is true, then any progress we make will go for naught with this fool coaching the team. I can live with Hue Jackson getting a shot, though personally I would much rather see Tom Cable given one more year, this team is finally turning the corner and some continuity would be nice for a change.

It sure seemed like Gruden was under heavy criticism for the failings of the Bucs after their super bowl win. But it looks like I'm wrong.

Where exactly is the 1st/2nd round talent at QB? Is there someone on the Raiders roster I don't know about? They are absolutely terrible at QB. I actually thought that Campbell would do well there. I thought he just needed a chance. I was wrong. This will never happen, but I think Orton would look good in silver and black.

Campbell was a first round draft pick by the Redskins. Whether or not he is a first round talent is open to argument...but he was in fact a first round pick.

Niners asked for permission to interview Hue Jackson, and why wouldn't he bolt at the earliest opportunity? I think I actually may feel bad for Raiders fans.

I'm with most of the Raider homers on this one. I'm not wild about him being let go...but depending who they bring in this is a fine move.

Hugh Jackson was brought in to be the HC in my opinion. It isnt like anyone ever really thought Cable was going to coach the Raiders into the promise land.

Much like Dallas, no legitimate coach with any tenure will take this job. He will have to promote within so he can continue to do things his way. The Cowboy errrrrrrr Raider way.

Tom Cable= Wade Phillips

Hugh Jackson= Jason Garrett

Same situation. Same crappy owner. Same miserable results.
