Run the Jewels 2 Thread - Now With Meows And Kittah Chants (1 Viewer)

I think, after hearing a few songs, it deserves its own thread. (People in the Kendrick Lamar thread were talking about it even though it has no bearing whatsoever on what Lamar is trying to do.) Blockbuster Night Part I could be one of the greatest produced tracks I've heard since El-P's "Drones Over Brooklyn." And the finest alliterative light verse you've heard in a long time.

By the way, I'm in the tank for El-P after Cancer 4 Cure.

eta* In fairness to Ilov80s, the title of this thread has been edited to get rid of the Soundbombing "Au Revoir You Too" reference from Third World War's introduction during Soundbombing II, IIRC. It was a play on words all around. It was a Pharoahe Monch and Shabaam Sahdeeq reference.

eta2* For Acer. Close Your Eyes (And Count to ####)

I like em, but they're not my favorite. El-P is the man. Killer Mike is fine but doesn't hold up compared to some of the other current top rappers in my book. Just my opinion. I had the album ranked in my FBG Album Poll 2014 list but it was in like the #10-20 range.

Love this album. (And not that anyone cares but "Close Your Eyes (and Count to ####)" was a top 5 song for me last year.)

I absolutely love Run the Jewels. I think that El-P and Killer Mike's albums are some of the best rap that I've heard in years. They combine El-P's sick futuristic beats with politically and socially conscious lyrics delivered with intensity and authenticity. "Run the Jewels II" was deservedly recognized by many publications as not only the best rap album of 2014, but one of the best albums across any genre of music that year. I saw them perform in Denver earlier this year (with VIP tickets from Run the Jewels' private stash), and they put on an incredible show. I highly recommend catching them at any of the numerous festivals they are performing at this spring/summer (Coachella, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, Firefly, WayHome, etc.).

My favorite song from their latest album is "Angel Duster". Super dope beat with anti-establishment, anti-religion lyrics.

Was this the show where they brought out Zach de la Rocha?

No, I saw RTJ the night before that. They brought out Zach de la Rocha at Madison Square Garden the following night. I would have loved to have seen that. I'm still holding out hope for a Rage Against the Machine reunion, so that I can cross seeing them perform live off my bucket list.

I almost totally agree, except that I only used to think that way about Killer Mike. Loved him when he did stuff with Outkast, on his own, not so much. But he's really, really on top of his game. And El-P is wildly underrated both as a producer and emcee. It's crazy.

And a couple of people definitely had this in the FBG Album Poll and were talking about it. Props to them. It was released slightly later in the year, and us pedestrian guys didn't get to it for some reason (hint: I didn't really care for the first album, which was a big mistake in retrospect. RTJ2 was filling up my Yahoo! inbox. The crowd sourcing fundraisers were kind of awesome.) It certainly wasn't slept on critically.

Looking forward to this. Been a fan of El P since those early Def Jux days. Fantastic Damage still gets play in the pod.

Killer Mike is so on top of his game. No one recently lyrically has matched his last 3 albums. Also, not to brag but I had RTJ 1 and R.A.P. Music on my best of lists a few years ago.

agreed. I think Killer Mike has been more consistant over the last few years. Though El-Ps verse on this is ridiculous.

Not even a humblebrag. :P

Just kidding -- you're pretty on top of it. I, for some reason, didn't like Killer Mike on the Cancer 4 Cure album so I assumed his work was like that. Plus, the political stuff on R.A.P. Music always keeps my own antennae up for any flaws. El-P I'm used to in that respect, I guess.

It was released in October.
Yeah, still haven't managed to give it a listen but its on Major's to do list along with Ariana Grande.

On another note, caught Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman live last week. Dont sleep on those cats.

Holy cow, pleasantly surprised to see this topic!

I've been listening to RTJ 1 and 2 almost non-stop since RTJ2's release.

I give RTJ2 the edge, but it's close. I could listen to RTJ1's "Get It" every single day.

Totally agree with the poster who said "Close Your Eyes (and count...)" was one of the best songs of the year. The album just never ends with insane beats/production.

El-P and KM are both hilarious and intelligent rappers, as well as interviewees.

Agree with every word of this.
