Russell could be released if McNabb arrives Wed Mar 31, 11:50 AM

Tim Kawakami, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports the Oakland Raiders could either ask QB JaMarcus Russell to take a pay cut or release him should the team acquire Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb or any other high-profile quarterback in the offseason. Russell has previously said he would not accept a pay cut.

Our view: Russell has obviously failed to live up to expectations during his time with the Raiders and the team could easily move in a different direction if they get McNabb.

Any chance that really happens? Would anyone claim Jamarcus if it did?

The money has been spent and they have to move forward if they are absolutely convinced that he has neither the ability nor the desire to get his act together. Hard to say whether or not they could be "absolutely convinced" at this point. I don't think teams that cut bait on players worry about who else may or may not take a chance on them.

I could see the Chargers, Broncos, and Chiefs bringing him in for the purpose of picking his brain on the Raiders playbook.

Oh wait, that would require that Russell actually reviewed his playbook.

Yeah, that would probably be a five minute conversation with several moments of uncomfortable silence.

Heard on NFL Live they would save some $6 mil if they cut him... hmmm wonder what they SHOULD do...?

To me the killer is that McNabb supposedly is not interested in playing with the Raiders.

Even as a San Diego fan, I'd like to see it happen...hate to see such a wasteland there with such a great early history in that franchise.

Plus, I have a couple of OAK players on my Dynasty squad :kicksrock:

McNabb might be the perfect mentor for Russel. "Here, you big idiot, do whatever the hell #5 does in the weight room, film room, and most of all dining room."

How much would you really pay to learn the keys to the Raiders' passing offense?
There are no keys to the Raider's passing game. Rich Gannon tossed them into the bay on his way out of town. You don't have to figure out how to stop a car that's up on blocks in the back yard in waist-high johnson grass.

You know it wasn't that long ago the football world pretty much had written off Vince Young. Russell may be immature and have squandered an opportunity of sorts but it's not the first time it's happened and his "opportunity" has certainly been less than ideal. Not saying he'll ever turn it around in oak but he could become viable some place else. He's 24yo and the raiders weren't the only team that would have picked him high in the first round.

"Three years from now you could certainly be looking at a guy who is one of the elite, top five qbs in this league."

:lmao:
Wow, I didn't remember that but it does make you pause when you hear the talking heads throw around phrases like "touch" and "accuracy" with regard to college QB's this month.
It's scary how sold everyone was on him. I've read a few scouting reports that said he wasn't ready to start straight away and that he should sit for a year and learn (not that he would have tried to learn) but most people thought he was the next Peyton Manning.

No. I don't care how positive the projections were for him. Most people most certainly did not think he was the next Peyton Manning.

I wasn't sold (but errict was much more accurate than I)

With no cap this year, I can't see any scenario in which the Raiders would want to keep Russell, Mcnabb or no Mcnabb.

I've always said Russell was one of the easiest busts to predict ever. The guy played his whole career at LSU with a national championship caliber defense and a bevy of eventual first round NFL WRs, yet LSU never won a championship specifically because of him. Florida never would have won that NC in '06 without Russell. LSU should have won that game going away but Russell just made so many stupid mistakes he gave it away.

And I can't see how anyone EVER said they saw touch in one of his passes.

I never thought much of him after he showed up fat at the combine. After that I would have been shocked if he was ever a success. Most FBG's (outside of LSU fans) thought the same.

I expected Quinn to be better than Russell but Quinn has been a disappointment as well.
