Russell Johnson "The Professor": Dead at 89 (1 Viewer)

Piece of my childhood died today. He was McGiver before McGiver existed. He could build a transistor radio out of a coconut. Let's see McGiver do that.

I also loved the show when I was a kid watching reruns. I'm old enough though to remember seeing the movie they made when it came out where they finally got rescued. They had a different lady playing Ginger. I was bummed about that.

The sad thing is that in real life he actually was a phd level physicist, but no one would ever take him seriously after the show ended. Ate at him until his dying day.

Yet he couldn't patch up a few holes in that damn ship.

And a WW2 veteran.

I saw this article yesterday. From the article:

Gilligan's Island first episode showing on TVLand right now.
That was when the opening theme song said "...and the rest" instead of naming the Professor and Mary Anne :hot:
Dawn Wells commented: "Russell was a true gentleman, a good father, a great friend, and 'the rest,'"

"He joined the Army Air Corps during World War II and served as a B-24 bombardier on missions over the Pacific war zone, breaking his ankles in 1945 when his plane was shot down over the Philippine island of Mindanao. He was discharged as a first lieutenant in November 1945, having earned a Purple Heart and other medals"

Also briefly held the world record for shotput.

Yes, that burned me up too for the longest time. Then I put it behind me and went on with my life.
It burned up Gilligan:

The "Gilligan" theme song underwent this one major change thanks to star Bob Denver (Gilligan), who personally went to the studio and asked that Johnson and Wells be added to the theme song's opening credits. When the studio at first refused saying it'd be too expensive to reshoot, Denver insisted, even saying that if Johnson and Wells weren't included, he wanted his name out of the song as well. The studio caved in, and "the Professor and Mary Ann" were shoehorned in at the very end of the theme for Seasons 2 and 3.

That Maynard G. Krebs was a good egg
