2011 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we plan to publish more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters.

With the labor uncertainty, there are more unanswered questions entering the summer than usual. The good news is that gives us some more time to discuss the merits of players without having to react (or overreact) to the smallest bits of news about a slight injury in practice, or coach speak. We'll have plenty of time for that when it comes (we hope).

In the meantime, as always we will post a list of players to be discussed each week. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discuss expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Ryan Grant, RB, Green Bay Packers

Player Page Link: Ryan Grant Player Page

Each article will include:

[*]Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

[*]Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads

[*]FBG Projections

[*]Consensus Member Projections

The Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

[*]Focus commentary on the player (or players) in question, and your expectations for said player (or players)

[*]Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"

[*]Avoid redundancies or  ... this should be about incremental analysis or debate

While not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to provide your own projections for the player (players):

Projections should include:

[*]For QBs: Attempts, Completions, Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Attempts, Rush Yards, Rush TDs

[*]For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

[*]For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs

Now let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Should be the starter but will share it more then in the past.

Ryan Grant is entering his fourth season (yes, he has been in the league for six years) of actual playing NFL football. Last year was a loss, and his time with the Giants was as a bench warmer. So basically Grant does not have that many miles on him. He knows the offense, he hits holes and he moves forward. Blocking is fair, pass receiving ok, doesn't fumble as a rule. During his three seasons of starting for the Packers, he finished in the top ten for rushing. TD scoring has been good (8, 5 and 11). Your basic high 2 RB in FF, low 1. A consistent grinder both on the field and in FF.

Going into this season, his fantasy appeal is limited for a number of reasons. Kuhns picked up 4 short yardage TD last year, and the Pack did not resign Kuhns to a very nice FB paycheck to have him not be productive again. James Starks came on at the end of the year and had some fair stats, good if you consider the fact the guy had not played for almost 2 years. And of course Grant is returning from last years season ending injury. Toss in Green as somewhat of a wild card and perhaps even a little wild cat thrown in with their newest rookie WR.

So, where does that leave us?

Personally, I don't think the pack would of paid his 1.75m roster bonus if they didn't think he still had some starting time left. Having said that, clearly the Packers don't need him to be their 300 carry RB. I am higher on Grant than others - 250 carries, 1,100 yards, 7td. He will be the #1 RB, but that may mean little as carries will be split and I think McCarthy will not be hesitant to run out the RB he thinks will fit best against whatever D the pack are up against.

If I could get him at the 25th RB off the board I would be happy and depending on your draft I think he might fall that far.

I'm going to be watching this situation closely this offseason...in general I think people are too high on the new shiney penny (Starks) and too down on the solid but unspectacular (Grant). I really think that Grant has the ability to offer some good value if he falls a bit, especially playing on that offense.

Ryan Grant at age 28 is at the tail end of his prime, but even when healthy was never more than an average back on an explosive team led by one of the premier QB’s. That’s still a valuable fantasy commodity due to increased red zone opportunities, so the situation is worth watching. But he’s coming off a torn ligament in his ankle, and looks to be a timeshare RBBC back heading into the 2011 season. This is a pass first team now, and with a multitude of running backs that get the goal line looks, it’s difficult to gauge Grant’s value.

The Packer RB depth chart be a situation that could change over the preseason, and because of that Grant could be value here but he could also be risk. I am leaning to him being risk.

So with that, my projections for Grant:

180/740/5 with 15/125/0, and one of a stable of RB’s getting work in Green Bay.

The only reason Kuhn carried the ball last year is because they were desperate. You are majorly overstating his likely impact.

It's not the one thing that will impact Ryan Grant, it is the cumulative impact of all those things.

I don't get this thinking. He only has 3 seasons of being a full time back. True, he did have an injury, but that was from getting rolled, not some issue with degeneration of a knee, etc.He may not get carries or be the top 10 in rushing (again), but not for that reason
