Ryan Grant (1 Viewer)

It seems to me that this is a forgotten RB who is quietly getting better the last few weeks. He is on pace right now for about 300 carries and 1200/250 and 8 TDs. He also is one of the few RBs getting the majority of his team's run plays (unless your afraid of A. Green which I am not). I think with the weather turning in GB and their desire to try and protect Rodgers a little more, they should have to run more and thus, I think he is in a great situation. I also think that GB will be fighting for their playoff lives all the way through week 16 and I like that he does get some passes thrown his way as well on screens, etc. I realize he is not the most talented RB but I am interested on the pool's opinions down the stretch. His schedule is pretty decent down the stretch with:

10 Dallas (decent)

11 S.F. (decent)

12 @ Detroit (yummy)

13 Baltimore (tough but not as tough as it used to be)

14 @ Chicago (Very Yummy, div game)

15 @ Pitt (terrible - look to sub in another player this week)

16 Seattle (decent to good)

So what are the opinions of the pool on Ryan Grant going forward? I would love to hear the opinions pro/con on this potential gem down the stretch.

You'd have to think that Mike McCarthy would stop trying to be so cute, especially when the weather turns cold, and use Grant more inside the 10-yard line. Through the first nine weeks, he's hardly ever used down there, and as good as his fantasy numbers have been, they're not even close to what they could be if he ever got the ball in the red zone. The Packers haven't been very successful so far, so maybe McCarthy will change his ways, but I doubt it.

It's certainly baffling to me why he's not getting more carries - it'd be different if they were winning every game throwing all over the place.

More of the same. Consistent. 90 yards and half-a-TD a game. His current mid-season pace 1,435 total yards (32 catches) and 8 TDs is dandy.
It is, it's just frustrating to see how few opportunities he gets and to realize how much better he could be.

He's my RB2 behind D.Williams and S.Jackson in two different leagues. I've had to lean on him more than I hoped because McFadden and Johnson did not step up fantasy wise. In that regard, his consistency has been a godsend.

I am a little nervous every time I start him, though. He's a good candidate to get those solid but unspectacular yardage points but he just isn't that guy who is going to explode for you and win your game or save you when other players put up a stinker. He's more of a "keep pace" contributor.

I definitely play matchups with him and frequently start WR's over him when his matchup is bad. In fact, that's probably the best description you can give of him...he does average against average run D's, does well but not spectacular against poor run D's and gets shut down by good run D's.

But for all the aspersions on his talent, that same line that can't seem to keep Rodgers on his feet is the same one that can't dominate their opponents and reliably open up running lanes.

:P If there was ever a game to lean on the running game it was last week against Tampa. Grant looked like he was ready to put some numbers up on the TB defense and the Packer braintrust opts for Rodgers in the shotgun. If I was a Green Bay fan I'd be awfully frustrated with the coaching and game planning.Thankfully, I ain't no Green Bay fan.

I love him, but I've nearly given up hope that the play calling in GB will become less asinine. They pass on 3rd in short, they pass on 1st & 10. They run FB dives 50% of the time inside the 5yd line.

Grant could be top-10 if things improve even slightly as the cold sets in. I'm hopeful & doubtful at the same time...

 One would like to think that Green Bay will lean on him a little more as the weather gets worse, and maybe, just maybe...... to keep Rodgers from getting killed.

I don't see him doing a lot down the stretch. I hate his playoff weeks of 14 and 15. If you start him both those weeks, you might not make it two week 16 and the big game. I traded him in a package last week. Their line stinks and they give the ball to the full back running and receiving close to the goal line.

He looked pretty bad against every decent defense he's played against. By bad I guess I mean very mediocre. Three weeks ago the murmurs were that GB would be looking for a new RB in the off-season because Grant was so pedestrian. The only thing that changed since then was two games against the Browns and the Bucks. Take a look at his season. He only has 4 "good" weeks and they were against the Rams, Lions, Browns and Bucks. His playoff schedule is not conducive to fantasy production.

He's not a bad back to have though. At one point I considered trading for him, but then realized that his only value lies is the fact that he's one of the few back that should get fed the ball 280+ times. So he can plod along at 4ypc or less and still put up respectable RB2 numbers. The only problem is that his job security will be an issue the first time a better back comes along. Sine I am in a dynasty league, this was an issue for me.

I have him as depth and might consider playing him over Steven Jackson given the right matchup. His YPC isn't bad, and he's actually getting the ball thrown to him a bit more this year than last season -- has just two fewer catches and more yards, so in PPR he's slightly more valuable.

Like others have mentioned, I don't quite understand what the Packers are doing regarding play-calling. It would be nice to see them simply line up and punch the ball in with Grant inside the three or four yard line.

maybe theres some logic in saving him for the crappy weather thats coming soon...then they feed him the ball all day long ...sounds as good as any other reason i guess

I think this is accurate. CLE and TB are the 2nd and 3rd worst defenses in YPC. Grant actually averaged less YPC against Tampa than their average.

That's what I was hoping for, but got tired of waiting...traded him away in a multi-player deal for SJax who is on a crap team but at least I know he'll get the rock
