Ryan Mathews Injury Update (1 Viewer)

Per CBS Sportsline: Chargers rookie RB Ryan Mathews was helped off the field during the first half on Sunday against the Jaguars. The trainers looked at his right foot/ankle on the sideline before he was carted off the field. He returned to the sideline in the second quarter and did not return to action as the game was well in hand. "Everything is (fine). I feel like I could have gone (returned), but the coaches didn't want to risk anything," Mathews told The San Diego Union-Tribune. X-rays were negative and Mathews said he wanted to go back in, but coach Norv Turner said he wasn't comfortable having the rookie return.

Makes sense not to put him back in since the game was pretty much over and in control.

As a Mathews owner I'm somewhat relieved. But I'm still concerned about the injury. From what I've read, he was carted off/helped off the field, which is never a good sign. I hope he can be healthy for this upcoming week.

Camera showed him a few times standing on the sidelines. Apparently he also ran back onto the field to applause from the crowd? :) Doesn't sound too bad..maybe it shook him up more than anything?

Happy that he's ok....but Mathews owners still have a lot of concerns.

1. This is a passing team

2. Sproles is the 3rd down back

3. Tolbert will steal touches throughout the game and appears to be a TD vulture

4. Mathews has shown a propensity to put the ball on the ground

The weird thing is that he never fumbled in college. Very odd for him to have fumbled twice already.

 I have already lowered expectations. I think he will be a borderline RB2. I don't think the upside I was hoping for when I drafted him will materialize. He stays in the lineup for now.

2 games in.

1 game under crazy weather conditions

1 game injured after putting up some decent #'s aside from the fumble.

Hit the panic button

I don't think anyone is saying hit the panic button, but there is certainly a constellation of facts going on here, which were highlighted above, that should cause some concern. I still love the guy's talent and think he will put up some numbers, but I had visions of borderline RB1 numbers when I drafted him.

2 games is clearly not a large enough sample size where 1 game the weather really bogged down the Chargers offense as a whole and another where he was injured early in the game. Hopefully Mathews is healthy enough to play week 3 and we'll hopefully get to see a full game out of him where the offense is clicking on all cylinders.

I must have been watching a different game. The game I saw he was on pace for over 100 yards rushing on over 20 carries and over over 120 yards receiving on more than 8 receptions at the time he got injured.

Week 1 he had 75 yards in a game where you typically expect a pretty big reduction in all offensive stats. Over half his carries were of the variety where you put tow hands over the ball, lower your head, and plow between the tackles for 3 yards. The way he was running tonight before the injury was not even remotely close to how he was running in that monsoon.... for obvious reasons.

I've good mind to buy low on him if others really feel like the above posters do.

Ditto. I knew Sproles would see plenty of 3rd & longish, but I didn't expect Norv to use a GL specialist, PLUS also use said GL specialist in other situations as well.

Was at the game today and the whole crowd held their breathe as he was down. When they carted him off it looked pretty serious (cart=no good) but later in the second he did come jogging out to an applause. While on the sidelines he was itching to come back in, Saw him kinda hopping up and down a few times, antsy, waiting for his number to be called. No limp while jogging back on or walking on the sidelines...just wanted to state what I observed. Other than that he looked good. Ran with speed, power and decisiveness and wa impressed from the limited amount I saw him play. Now if he could just hold onto the dang ball!

Just read that he wanted to come back in but was held out. Hoping it was as a precaution and not the fact that he fumbled again!

Joe Addai was on pace for 170 yards rushing last nite alsoSorry but on pace is one of the worst assumptions in FF

Along with Turner this is the most significant injury of the week, I thought this would be slammed with info from the homers.

This is the first thing I read with an actual diagnosis....

From Yahoo! and AP http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AhfY...ers-mathewshurt

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Chargers rookie running back Ryan Mathews(notes) sprained his right ankle at the end of a 3-yard run in the first quarter of Sunday’s 38-13 win over Jacksonville and didn’t return.

Mathews had to be helped off the field. After being examined on the bench, Mathews was taken to the locker room on a cart. He jogged back to the bench midway through the second quarter.

“I feel like I could have played, but they didn’t want to risk it, so they sat me out,” Mathews said.

Mathews was being tackled when Jaguars linebacker Kirk Morrison(notes) landed on his legs.

“Whether he could’ve or couldn’t have returned, I wasn’t comfortable having him return,” coach Norv Turner said. “Depending on the severity of it, I don’t want an injury that might be a one-week injury turn into a six-week injury.”

In two games, Mathews has 101 yards on 24 carries, two fumbles and no touchdowns. The two fumbles have led to 10 points for San Diego’s opponents, including a Jacksonville field goal Sunday.

It wasn't an assumption it was a point of clarification. A guy has a good first quarter and gets injured after thta so eveyone says he's not looking like he will be more then a mediocre RB2? That makes no sense. I'm not saying one good quarter is justification for putting him in the top 5, but how exactly is it justification for pegging him as a RB20+No point in arguing further about it. As long as he isn't injured long term I will be proven correct on him from what I have seen so far.

You people don't watch the games at all, seriously. The early goalline TD was a FB give, with Mathews lined up behidn the FB. The week prior they left Sproles in the game on the 6 yard line. They have the exact opposite of a goal line specialist. It is glaringly apparent that they will use any of those guys in goalline situations.Sproles is the passing down back, but it is also apparentl that they call frequent designed screen playes on early down with Mathews. He had two nice ones in less than 1 quarter of play on Sunday. I think Mathews is in for a big season from here on out if he gets his ankle healthy.

I've watched a fair amount of the two SD games and while I don't think Tolbert is necessarily a GL specialist it would be silly of us to think that he won't cut into Mathews GL opps. Add to this that they love to pass around the GL and I think you have to temper your expectations of Mathews a bit. FWIW, I had him ranked as RB12 going into the year and now expect him to perform as RB18-20. Again, I'm not suggesting that Mathews is gonna get pulled everytime SD is inside the five, just that there are alot of GL mouths to feed.

I don't think he needs more than 8-10 Tds to have a big year from here on out. Every TD doesn't have to come from the 1 yd line. This is mico analyzing. The bottom line is that he looks like the real deal and I've seen enough to know that when healthy he's going to have nice numbers. He's more than a Grant or Benson.

I tend to agree that Matthews has looked good enough to me to try and buy low now. What type of offers are you guys throwing out for him?

concerned about Mathews fumbles. He has had two so far, which have turned into 10 points for the other teams.

anyone else concerned about the fumbles????????????

He didn't fumble in college on 500+ carries, so i have a feeling it's a bit fluky he's fumbled so much.LT fumbled 3 times in his first 2 games his rookie year, just sayin, it doesn't mean a trend for a rookie to have some jitters early on.

Tolbert was the halfback and Hester was the fullback. Mathews got the carry from the five down to the two, and then came out of the game while Tolbert punched it in and did his little dance.

Yeah, I thought I saw Mathews running off the field when they brought in Tolbert. The horror, the horror.

I'm not. It's not like the fumbles were caused by improper form or carelessness in holding onto the ball. He just got completely clocked and then stripped. (And I'm not sure the second one was really a fumble anyway.)

As a Mathews owner this is good news, but I'm here to share some bad news.

He's headed to Seattle next week. Seattle is an overall poor team. That sounds like good news. However, the have built their defense to first and foremost stop the run. If you check the stats from the first two weeks you'll see what I'm talking about. So far this year Seattle has given up 114 yards on 57 carries including a long run of 10 yards. The concept here is that they sell out to stop the run no matter what happens on first and second down forcing third and long situations giving an opportunistic defense backfield a chance to make a play. Very successful in week 1 at home against SF QB Alex Smith. Not so much in week 2 at Denver against QB Kyle Orton.

If Mathews is ready to go next week I don't expect good numbers from him. I think QB Phillip Rivers will post much better stats than Mathews.

Making things more complicated, we should expect Seattle to be a Jeckyl and Hyde team depending on whether they are at home or on the road. The crowd in Seattle impacts a game like few others. They take immense pride in the number of false starts they cause with noise.

Prediction: If he plays in week 3 expectations will be high, but production will be poor.

Let's finish with some good news. He gets Zona, Oakland, and St. Louis in weeks 4-6. They rank 31, 29, and 30 so far this season in rushing yards allowed.

Thanks for the post. It will be interesting to see where he comes out in the rankings. I'm looking at other options regardless. Maybe Reggie B. gets a start.

Lots of good info there, here's a snippet:

"On the plan for all three RBs

I’ll go back to what I started talking about in May and what I talked about all through August. We have a plan to use all three of those guys. They all have different strengths. That was one of the great things to me with Tolbert and knowing that we were going to play him more as a runner that we didn’t have to put all the burden on Ryan. I’m anxious. I’m excited to get to a game where Ryan gets 25 touches because I think he’s going to make some big things happen, but to be in the position we were yesterday and have Tolbert go in and get 18 carries and have the production he had, it was outstanding."

Yes, any other news would be greatly appreciated. I have the coveted #1WW priority (which is processed tonight at midnight) and I need to know whether or not to use the claim on Tolbert or save the priority for another day. If I could get two games out of Tolbert as a starter it would be worth it to me.What are your thoughts about Tolbert starting in week 3 at Seattle? Any local SD homers have any info? I know Norvel will update the media on Wednesday but I need to know before then. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

FWIW Tolbert has looked awesome in his role as GL/SY back. I still think mathews would get him but tolbert is gonna take 4-5 scores throughout the year (if not more).

To be fair, If I was playing Madden with this team, I'd do the same thing. Short yardage running is tough, especially at the GL. So many guys packed in a tight area, and gang tackles etc. I'd give the ball to my bowling ball who wraps up and just seems to relish in getting hit/hitting back.I for one will be picking up tollbert this week and stashing him. He could be a decent byw week plugin on his own, but if mathews goes down this guy will put up better numbers than sproles IMO.

Looks like Ryan will play. JUdgeing by the schedule that was just listed, I'd grab him. SD very well might blow AZ out and then have a 'snelling' like performance after they rest RM with the game out of hand in any of the 4-6 games after SEA.

Update:

Tests on Mathews' right ankle were negative and all indications are that the he will play Sunday at Seattle, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Recommendation:

Mathews wore a protective boot and was said to be sore after leaving the Week 2 game in the first quarter, but apparently the injury is not too serious. What could be of greater concern is the fact that Mathews has fumbled the ball away in each of his two games as a pro. Mathews was on the sideline for most of the season opener due to a decline in play after his early fumble, and then he fumbled again Sunday before getting hurt. But notwithstanding the turnovers, Mathews is doing a good job moving the ball. He has 24 rushes for 101 yards and thee receptions for 31 yards on the season so far.

I think Mathews starts against SEA, as he could have returned in the second half last week, but the SEA run d is excellent so I hope he doesn't. I would rather see him rest up this week and begin his 4 week demolition fully healthy.

Tolbert should be rostered in most leagues regardless of Matthews's status this week. Tolbert will continue to get some short yardage work, maybe another touch or two in addition, along with being the handcuff.
