Ryan Torain (1 Viewer)

I think a cell phone kiosk in Denver is about to get a call from DC...possibly a little "motivation"?

This even out-Shannies Shanny. How many freaking RBs are on the roster? Is this a signal that Portis will be traded?

Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson, Willie Parker, Ryan Torain...who else is still there?

Boy, do coaches have "their guys" or what?

I'm not going to laugh this one off. Shanny always saw something special in the kid.

Big time sleeper here IMHO, would have been a first rounder without his injury history. Injuries have gotten in the way, but this kid has always had first round talent and has the makeup to succeed in a zone blocking offense.

I'm not saying draft him early, just saying keep your eye on the situation...he definitely has more upside than the other dinosaurs in camp.

I'm suprised Portis hasn't been cut already. I always thought the main reason he wasn't was because of the cap hit they'd have to take, but apparently not.

At what institute of higher learning did the young man happen to matriculate, L?

There isn't a cap hit this year is there? I'll be shocked if Torian ever does anything in the NFL after the combination of injuries he had in '08.

Talent and guaranteed money. Shanahan still sees talent in Portis. So if Portis gets with the program, he can probably still be productive.Over $6M of Portis' $7M salary is guaranteed. So cutting him does not save much money.

Couple of interesting thoughts:

From Shanahan:

“We’ll change it up week by week,” Shanahan said. “It all depends what our game plan is. We do have a plan each week relative to how many carries we want each running back to have. … We were hoping we could keep both guys fresh and I think we did.”

This suggests Williams is not in the plans.

From Washington Post reporter:

After the game, Shanahan said the plan was for Portis to play on third downs and obvious passing downs and for Ryan Torain, who was activated from the practice squad Saturday, to often play on first and second downs. But was that the plan before Portis avoided contact on his long run?

This suggests a pretty good split for Torain, but its too early to say how much this will turn into RBBC, or whether one back will dominate carries in any given week.
