Safety Dance? (1 Viewer)

Safety swap?

Safety Sean Jones has given up a handful of touchdowns when singled up on a tight end, and the Browns will consider moving him to free safety and Brodney Pool to strong.

"That's something we'll have to look at during the bye week," Crennel said. "If we need to swap them, we'll swap them. If there are other things we can do to affect those matchups, then we'll do that."

Interesting to see how this one plays out

I'm not sure what to think about this. I look for them, as Crennel said, to do other things to affect the matchups instead of moving Jones to FS.

Geez! As if my DB's weren't weak enough already with Laron Landry's poor numbers. I was counting on Jones as my consitant weekly start after this week with a couple of stopgaps for the rest of the season.Between this and my Robert Mathis/Tamba Hali DL debocle, I'm starting to dislike IDP's. :goodposting:

Worth watching, but I think it's probably a non-issue. The Browns only face two above average receiving TEs through Week 16 -- Todd Heap and Heath Miller -- and both of those teams like to run the ball. Though Pool would probably be a better one-on-one matchup than Jones, he hasn't exactly been a world-beater in coverage this year either. Considering moving a player with the ball skills to make five interceptions and 16 passes defended while solidly defending the run to a deep safety role for a player with similar ball skills and is less physical against the run seems like an over-reaction.

I don't see it happening either Jean. Watson had a big game vs the Browns and was a matchup problem, but he's a matchup problem for any team. I'm sure Romeo is frustrated they have given up 4 TD's to TE's the past 2 weeks.

Any news from the Cleveland beat writers on the potential position switch coming out of the bye week???

This is all I've ran across so far:Crennel seemed invigorated after what he called ''male bonding'' with his month-old grandson. . . . Rookie cornerback Eric Wright said the Browns didn't tear the defense apart during last week's practices. ''It's the same old thing we do every week after a game,'' Wright said. Davis said the Browns did tackling drills and looked at plays that had hurt them. ''A lot of them were self-inflicted,'' Davis said.

I listened to some of Tony Grossi (Cleveland Plain Dealer's beat writer) podcast today. He said the Browns have their safety's interchangable, Jones has had some trouble in coverage this year. He said more than likely you will see a shift in duties with Sean Jones up in the box more and Pool roaming deep.

Now ... I'm not a Browns homer, and don't know anything about Mr. Grossi.

The part about Jones/Pool is just shy of halfway. Its a question about Mike Adams.

So this should, in effect, INCREASE Jones value, right guys???

If indeed Mr. Grossi is a good source ... It should in leagues who favor tackles. As a Jones owner, I'm liking it!

It should return his value to last year's range. I haven't noticed Jones up in the box as much, but I haven't noticed them as"interchangeable" either. The games I've watched (PIT, CIN, BAL, NE) were against teams who used multi WRs or who had two solid options that necessitated the Browns to play a fair amount of nickel snaps and two deep safety looks to protect injured and young corners. Sounds like it was even more than that.

The latest media report makes it sound like little has changed between 2006 and 2007, but the team has been getting caught with its pants down and the safeties haven't been able to recover. Makes sense, since Jones' coverage stat lines were as solid as anyone's in the league last year and this year's pace (~3 INT and 15 PD) isn't far behind last season's. Neither he nor Pool are below average cover players. I think Pool has played at a more questionable level than Jones. I'll watch for this interchangeable business the next chance I get, but these stat lines...

Pool 13-6

Jones 25-11

...argue that the two really aren't interchangeable to me.

Here's today's story with a couple selected excerpts.

That's been one of the dilemmas defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has wrestled with - bolstering the run defense with a safety positioned closer to the line of scrimmage without forsaking big plays in the pass defense.

"Sometimes you ask the safety to be a filler in the run game and he has a gap responsibility down in the box," Crennel said. "So teams who are good play-action teams can then get the tight end out and cause the safety some issues and some problems.

"But you tell the guys that if coverage is your first responsibility, then you have to take care of that first and then you can help out on the run. Even though I have a gap responsibility, my first job is coverage."

The Browns like to think that Jones and safety Brodney Pool are interchangeable, so each has been tried as the so-called eighth man "in the box" to help defend the run. And each has been burned as a result.

Grossi is usually good with this information. He is pretty close to the team and coaches. I would trust his word on this.
