Saints fined $30,000 by NFL for hits versus Vikings

Posted by Chip Scoggins

Minneapolis Star and Tribune

Three New Orleans Saints players were fined a total of $30,000 for four different hits in Sunday's NFC Championship game. Three of those hits were delivered to Brett Favre.

As we mentioned earlier Bobby McCray was fined $20,000 for two hits on Favre. The first came after Favre handed off to Percy Harvin in the first quarter. McCray then hit Favre in the knees on his interception in the third quarter, causing Favre to suffer a left ankle injury.

Defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove was fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness when he lifted Favre up and slammed him to the turf in the third quarter.

Finally, Jonathan Casillas was fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness when he hit punt returner Darius Reynaud after he had downed the ball.

Seems like the Saints were willing to buy the game with late hits agains Favre

This is getting ridiculous.

To anyone who thinks these fines are warranted, please do yourself a favor and watch the replays. I understand McCray being fined for the low hit, but other than that, the other 3 fines are completely unwarranted.

(And before you try and say we "bought" this game, for the record, we were flagged for each one of these hits, except for McCray's low hit).

If they try that crap against Indy Freeney will take out Brees for good. Having said that, I don't look for Manning's jersey to get dirty.

I'm a Favre fan, and in my opinion, it was a brilliant game plan. I'll bet if Favre hadn't had an injured ankle he would have run the ball at the end of the game.

Right...he managed to scramble out of the pocket all the way to the sideline, but his injured ankle prevented him from running straight for 10-12 feet. We all know why he threw that ball. Same reason as against the Cowboys the week before.

First of all, are the Saint haters saying this is the first team to have a game plan to hit a QB multiple times so as to disrupt an offense. Is this the only team in 2009 to be fined for hits. Come on!

Secondly, the Colts nailed Mark Sanchez after he handed the ball off . Just like McCray on Favre. No penalty, no fine.

Thirdly, if Freeney goes after Brees, isn't that just as bad as what you guys say the Saints did.

And now, back to rational thoughts.

I really don't think you will see as much pressure put on Manning. First of all, Peyton will get rid of the ball quicker and more accurately than Favre. Secondly, I really don't think that sort of pressure bothers Peyton. I would opt for more coverage and try to just hang in the game on offense and special teams if I were the Saints.

Saints are my team , but I think it will be very tough for this strategy to work on the Colts.

I think any owner would pay 30k for a Super Bowl visit. :sadbanana:

Hitting the QB hard, often and sometimes late is a brilliant strategy. Usually pays off in the end.

Agree with Gian that other teams will see this and, a la Florida/Florida State in the mid-90s, take the heat after the game if they can get a few cheapies in on the QB at a time that really counts.

And also agree with Johnny U that if the NFL isn't going to put a stop to it it'll have to be the 3rd string DE getting himself ejected for an over the top shot on the other guy's QB.

One of the many things I like about Jeff Fisher is that he understands that it's up to him, and not Goodell, to protect his players. The crackback block on Merriman by the reserve TE in retaliation for pretty innocuous, but late, contact on Young a couple years ago was a thing of beauty.

Seems like a stupid thing to say. :sadbanana:
Why is that? There def coach seems to enjoy playing dirty, so why wouldn't his players?
I believe that fines given out by the NFL are mostly unfair and almost random. Some unavoidable hits are fined worse than players doing intentional acts. Case in point: Cedric Griffen collides with Ocho Cinco in the air and is fined 10 grand. Robert Ayers picks up Jamal Charles and drives his head into the ground and is fined 5 grand.

What are they supposed to do....do nothing? Maybe just rely on justice to be served on the field? I'm in favor of both.

None of it matters (the hits on Favre, the 12 men on the field, etc.) if Adrian and Harvin hold on to the freaking football. That's the game, right there. All of this other stuff is just side show. They didn't, Saints move on...geaux Saints!

I'll take both of those bets.
If they bought their way into the super Bowl hey paid a pretty small price. What did Ziggy Wolf pay in his attempt? Twelve million to Favre and hefty contracts for Jared Allen and Berrian. Of course some of that is a down payment on a new stadium. The Saints have nothing to be ashamed of. There are a lot of players who paid fines throughout the year sitting at home watching the game.

Well, besides the fact that, despite the 5 turnovers, the Favre hits, the 12 men on the field penalty, the Saints couldn't put the Vikings away in regulation in their own Dome :-)

This is nothing but  10 years ago none of those hits would have even drawn a flag.

The Saints did put up 28 on a good defense that continually had to make amends for the two best skill players on their own offense who kept giving the ball back. The Saints took advantage of sloppy play by the Vikings. The Vikings SHOULD have won but they DID NOT. The shame lies in the frozen Tundra, not on the banks of the Mississipp :lmao:

He was being sarcastic of course, but yeah I buy what you're selling anyway.

:pickle:   Maybe the Vikes should try and not give the ball away 5 times. :excited: I guess Arizona bought the win over Green Bay then too.Keep the whining going, it's hilarious.

The same reason he threw the last Int against the Giants in his last game with GB.

Oh, absolutely, no question. The Saints deserved to win, and the Vikings deserved to lose. And by the way, we're on the banks of the Mississip too :-)
