Saints / Pats Monumental MNF Faceoff Thread? (1 Viewer)

I sure don't want to recreate something already started (could have sworn there was a thread, just could not find it).

BUT, what are people here thinking on this game? Would love to know.

Because this is the biggest regular season game in New Orleans Saints history.

Yes, sad, call it what you will (a franchise with a poor history, you can call it that), but this is a City struggling to survive and you'd be surprised at the intensity that has been invested in this football team. I am part of a family that has held tickets since 1967, we haven't missed a game and we reside on the lower level between the 5 and the 0. From Gilliam's opening kickoff return for a TD, to Dempsey's 63 yard field goal, to Manning's 10 year struggles with no o-line, to the Mora years and its great defenses and repeated disappointments, to Brees and this 10-0 start. I say all that because there is a lot of that in this town, just sheer investment and dedication on a number of levels.

And the Dome will be loud, very, very, very loud. The Saints bring a terrific home field advantage.

I have extreme concerns about Brady + Moss/Welker obviously: the Saints defensive secondary has been heavily depleted from the excellent pairing of Greer and Porter that was working so well. Ellis is coming back, but in what shape and for how many plays? The defensive middle has been torn up without him.

And what of the Pats' defense's ability to stop the run and pass? My view of their line and secondary is their extremely hot and cold, if their defense gets started they can be extremely dangerous and overpowering with the ability to score. On the other hand they can get run over.

Also does Belichick and his coaching abilities play a real role in this game? Is his ability to take away a team's advantages overstated or does it get too overlooked these days given all the Pats' success?

I am not sure which team wants or needs this game more either. The Saints definitely need it, they are still just a game ahead in the home field playoff race with the Vikes. But the Pats are playing for playoff advantage too.

Personally, I can see this game being a traditional Saints letdown (see Colts opening NFL game in 2007 or any of a myriad of disappointing home field and playoff losses over the years) or I can see it being confirmation of what they have been all year long, an elite team that has a program for winning.

My ability to be objective is shot - opinions, please!

GEAUX SAINTS!!!

Should be a great game tonight with alot of points. I had this one circled on my calander since the beginning of the season. The Saints best shot is going to be to slow this thing down, run the ball and keep Brady off the field. The Saints D has been so good because most teams are playing from behind or trying too hard to make things happen to keep pace with the Saints. Similar to how the Colts D has been in some instances past few years.

I think the Pats take it in a shootout. 41-35.

I was wondering what some people think for projections for tonights game. I need a big night out of Brady to win my league championship.

Kindly

Johnny

Bussinesses are shutting down at noon. Schools are being let out early although it is said to be for different reasons. The entire city is wearing black and gold this morning. This is very big for the city.

On the game, I think the Pats are going to need to jump out early to take the crowd out of the game. I don't know the exact numbers, but in the other thread, New England is being outscored in the 2nd half, whereas the Saints have never been outscored in the 2nd half.

I need 21 from Brees to beat our leagues leading team and secure a playoff spot for myself. Hope this is a high scoring affair and my gut feeling is that it will be.

I don't mean to offend, but if this is true, it's pretty pathetic imo. It's a football game. What kind of message is this sending?

Why would slowing the game down be the Saints best shot? Couldn't you say the same about the Pats? Shouldn't they try and keep Brees off the field?

If I were the Saints, I would not want to get in a shootout with Brady-Moss-Welker with the Saints current secondary. That is why I think it would be best for the Saints to slow it down.

I don't agree with the Saints slowing it down...IMO that plays to the strength of the Pats defense. The Pats weakness on D (and I have stated it in plenty of threads) is their pass rush...they are subpar in this area and can get exposed by quality QBs like Brees. By slowing things down it allows Wilfork, Warren and Mayo to make plays which is what the Pats want. The Saints are better off challenging the Pats to get to Brees because if they can't he will eat them up with all his weapons.

What kind of message does Mardi Gras send? It's the city's mind set year round.

I'm playing my mailman this week for first place in my division. I'm up by 48 points and have Colston, Shockey and Bodden going. He has Brady, Welker, Gostkowski and Mayo. Hello Newman!

Dude - it's what we do.See: Mardi Gras.

Here's the story:

>The City of New Orleans announced that City Hall, along with other city offices located at 1515 Poydras St. and 1340 Poydras St. will close at 3 p.m. today because of anticipated traffic and other preparations for the New Orleans Saints game against the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football.<

No really, people are already in the streets and in offices (and at home) in black and gold, have been since this morning.

Yes, the home crowd will be a factor.

I like the sound of this.Would love to hear from more Pats fans. Really wondering what to expect tonight.

As a Steelers fan, I want to see the Saints destroy the Patriots :hot: . That said, I'm not sure the Saints D can stop the Brady/Welker/Moss express. I do expect a high scoring game, which isn't exactly going out on a limb. Should be a fun game to watch.

I think it's in the interest of both teams to have a shootout. Just forget about running the ball. THROW! AND THROW AGAIN! Get that touchdown as quickly as possible, and then let your opponent do the same. Share and share alike. The faster you score, the better things will be. 50-49 final would be the best outcome.

I work one block from the dome and don't know of anyone that's closing except maybe an hour earlier than normal and I haven't heard of any schools getting let out early.

very cool for the city.what's not to like about Brees and the Saints.but I think that's WHY I would take any of the AFC perennial powerhouses (NE, IND, PIT) over New Orleans tonight. The "Big Game" element of this whole thing is all on New Orleans... this would be a nice game to have for any of those three AFC powerhouses, but by no means a "must win" or a game by which the entire season could sink or sail from.Any time you start adding all these other elements to a game (hype, pressure, environment, etc) I'll take the battle-tested team. We'll get a high scoring game where New England manages the clock better and just has a superior end-of-game strategy than New Orleans.

I'm hoping for a shootout, personally, as I think that's the only way New Orleans can beat N.E.

I'd love to see New Orleans wipe the floor with New England, but I don't expect that to happen. I just hope the Saints don't spot New England 21 points. I don't think they have enough D

to stage that much of a comeback against the Pats.

I won't make the mistake of going to bed early, as I did with the Colts/Pats a few weeks ago.

Don't mistake fan excitement and hype for what the Saints themselves are thinking. Many of the players from the 2006 run are still in place and defensive additions like Darren Sharper, Randall Gay, Jonathan Vilma, Jabari Greer, and Sedrick Ellis are all veterans with big game experience or in Ellis' case, used to the big stages in college. I don't think they view this as their Super Bowl at all.

I love the message it sends. I love New Orleans. I am a Vikings fan but NO is my second favorite team and the city and people are great.

Saints have some guys with interesting insights into gameplanning too:Ex-Pats like Heath Evans, David Thomas, Randall Gay, Kyle Eckel.Ex-AFC East guys like Vilma and Greer with lots of experience vs the Pats.

If the Pats somehow find themselves up by 21 at any point in the game, I hope they choose to ignore it. If they take their foot off the gas, they will be gashed as the game goes on.

This game has real potential to be a fantasy bonanza. A 3 TD buffer could be erased by either team in a hurry.

Hypothetical: The Pats have a 4 point lead with 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter but Brees has been unstoppable in the 2nd half and momentum has turned. Pats have a 4th and 2 at their own 28 yard line. What happens? :o

I think the fans are overstating the importance of this football game, which is totally fine with me. Their team is undefeated, going up against a major road block that is familiar to the undefeated chase. It makes for a great story in a town who wants to back their Black and Gold. It will be a very good game with a playoff atmosphere for sure. Possibly a super bowl preview...I dont think either team wants to get in a track meet though. I'll take the under if it floats up to 58. Both of these teams can run the ball effectively.

For Saints fan this is a huge game, and might be the biggest game in the history of the franchise with the exception of their first playoff win perhaps. It really has very little to do with staying undefeted, and only slightly more with staying a game ahead on the Vikings for home field advantage.

This is the first game used as measuring stick to see if the New Orleans franchise has turned the corner on what is a historically bad franchise. What better way to proove success in the future of this franchise than with a win against the most successful franchise in the past decade.

Bingo. Though a loss certainly wouldn't end our season by any means, it would absolutely devastate most fans, including this one hurr.

Perfectly put. As a fan, I couldn't care less about going undefeated. I need to know for sure that this isn't the same ol' Saints before I really put my heart into this team.

I'm pulling for a shoot out. I'm up 30 points and fighting for the # 1 seed. I'm out of bullets but my opponent has Pierre Thomas, Mike Bell and Jabari Greer. I need the running game to be moot. And I need Greer's groin to keep him sidelined.

Aside from that, I'm very curious to see how Belechick tries to handle the Saints. Does he stack the line and hope his secondary can force some turnovers? Or does he let the Saints run all day thereby eating the clock and limiting their scoring potential?

On another note, a buddy of mine owns a bar in MA. Anyone in Pats gear gets $1 drafts. Anyone in Saints gear has to pay $10.

Go Pats! :goodposting:

I see you posted this 7 hours ago ... but FWIW, 1250 Poydras (two blocks SE of the Dome) closed down at 4:00 p.m. Did it for the Falcons MNF game four weeks ago, too. I believe the adjacent Entergy building follows the same protocols (same bldg management).Have no clue about schools ... they should have let off earl enough at normal hours to avoid traffic snarls.

All I know is after watching the Hous/Indy game yesterday, if either team tonight gets an early largish lead, they'd better keep the pedal to the metal & keep scoring... This might be the only game where Payton doesn't take the air out of the ball & run, run, run w/ a lead

Im actually shocked how many people are picking the Saints. I just dont see how the Saints cornerbacks can stop the Pats passing game. Ill say Pats by more than 10.

Have you watched them much this year? There defense is better than you think and their running game is better than the Patriots, nevermind the fact they're playing at home, which is a huge advantage for the Saints.
