Saints released Dwight Smith (1 Viewer)

Report is that Tampa Bay is most likely suiter ...

The New Orleans Saints apprised agent Drew Rosenhaus on Thursday that they have abandoned their efforts to trade starting free safety Dwight Smith, one of their steadiest defenders during a dismal 2005 season, and instead will release the veteran defensive back after just one year with the franchise.

The move comes after New Orleans officials spent much of the offseason attempting to trade Smith, and just one week before Saints players are scheduled to report to summer training camp at Millsaps College near Jackson, Miss.

A five-year veteran, Smith will become an unrestricted free agent once his name officially appears on the NFL internal transactions network, which could come as early as Thursday afternoon. While the Saints apparently could not find a trade deal to their liking, it is expected that Smith will have multiple suitors as a free agent.

One franchise that probably will pursue him is Tampa Bay, the franchise with which Smith began his NFL career. It will not be surprising if Smith has a new home within two or three days.

The former Akron standout, a third-round pick of the Bucs in the 2001 draft, is the kind of safety many teams covet -- an interior defender with cornerback-level coverage skills. In fact, Smith started his career with the Bucs as a standout nickel cornerback and then was moved to safety 2003.

Smith, 27, provides a defense with tremendous flexibility because of his hybrid skills and his ability to move out into the slot and cover wide receivers.

As arguably the Saints' most notable veteran addition in 2005, Smith signed a five-year, $15 million contract as an unrestricted free agent, and the deal included a $3.5 million signing bonus. The four years that were remaining on his New Orleans contract were for base salaries of $1.2 million (for 2006), $1.6 million (2007), $2.5 million (2008) and $3.5 million (2009). Given the palatable level of those salaries for the next two seasons, it is surprising that no team stepped up and traded for him.

In his only season with the Saints, Smith appeared in 15 games, all starts, and registered 86 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, seven passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

It has been rumored that Smith might have experienced some personality conflicts with some members of the New Orleans management team. It is also possible that with a new head coach (Sean Payton) and new defensive coordinator (Gary Gibbs), he simply did not fit into the Saints' plans any longer.

New Orleans has dramatically reshapes its safety corps in the last 14 months. The Saints used second-round picks on Josh Bullocks in 2005 and on Roman Harper in 2006. A player the coaches regard very highly, Bullocks started 13 games as a rookie last year. New Orleans also signed veteran Omar Stoutmire as a free agent in the offseason and acquired former second-rounder Bryan Scott in a trade with Atlanta.

For his career, Smith has appeared in 78 games and started 49 of them. He has 306 tackles, one sack, 14 interceptions, 45 passes defensed, seven forced fumbles and two recoveries. In Tampa Bay's victory over the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII, Smith returned two interceptions for touchdowns.

Seems to me he would start at FS over Brown in Hou and also in SF ...

TB, Ten and Mia all seem logical?

that franchise puzzles me. he played well for them.
What's puzzling ? New regime continues to clean house and keep their "kind" of players.
he's a versatile player who can play both safety spots and also line up at nickel back if needed. he's probably the only person on the Saints roster who has won a Super Bowl.what's not to like? why do they have to release him? is it a money issue?

A little puzzling to me, too. But Gibbs apparently wants little to do with Bellamy and Smith. To my knowledge, there weren't any specific talent or cap issues that prompted his release -- they just didn't think he was a fit.

Did they have to release him, no. Was it a money issue, not likely looking at the numbers listed. Obviously there was something not to like, so it comes down to not fitting what they want to do or attitude/character. Will we ever really know why? Doubtful, but either way, Payton continues to clean house (cut Brooks, Boo Williams, Kendyl Jacox. Traded Gandy and Sullivan for peanuts. Let Bentley and Howard go in FA - Bentley going was certainly due to the $$ he was asking for). Pretty telling when no other team was willing to trade for Smith.

Gibbs wants little to do with Bellamy ?? Maybe you have access to some inside info, but everything I've heard sounds like he's going to be one of the starters at safety. Looked fully recovered from the shoulder injury and supposedly had a great mini-camp.

Last reports I saw suggested Stoutmire and Bullocks as the starters. Granted, I don't think much of Stoutmire, but I'm not impressed enough with Bellamy to push speculation that he may regain his starting job just yet. Most recent USA Today team report showing current starters. Also notes Fujita WLB and Simmons SLB BTW.

DEFENSIVE BACKS: Starters — LCB Mike McKenzie, RCB Fred Thomas, FS Omar Stoutmire, SS Josh Bullocks. Backups — Dwight Smith, Jay Bellamy, Jason Craft, Joey Thomas, Bryan Scott, Roman Harper, Steve Gleason, Josh Lay, Anwar Phillips, Grant Mason, Ray Williams.

McKenzie was rewarded with a contract extension in training camp last summer, but he didn't play like it afterward. He'll have to play much better this time around if the Saints are going to be successful, as will Fred Thomas. Stoutmire, another free agent pickup, took over from Smith during the off-season workouts and could solidify his spot in training camp. Bullocks started 14 games in 2005 after Bellamy was lost for the season and is expected to continue to improve. Smith, Craft, Scott and Harper will all vie for playing time in the nickel and dime packages.

Fair enough. Ourlads (link) shows Bellamy starting at SS (with Smith at FS, obviously not updated). Of course, they show Bullocks as second team, which certainly is incorrect. Well, hard to say, I was just surprised at seeing what you wrote about Gibbs wanting little to do with him when everything I had read and heard was to the contrary.

Right or wrong, these are the kind of moves that Payton has to make. He'll be given time to implement his system with his guys without having the previous group of underachievers dictate his tenure.

but Smith was only there for a year and looked good in the few games I watched him play. Seems strange to group him in with guys that have been around for awhile.I agree that change was needed, but he seems like a strange scapegoat to me.

I know that Smith had a couple off field things and it seems like the current staff has been trying to send him away since they came on board, but Smith was productive and and seemed professional on the field at least. Makes me wonder what kind of behind the curtain things are going on with him; especially considering they apparently could not get someone to offer a late round or some sort of conditional pick for the guy.

I see Bullocks and Roman Harper as the starting tandem by the end of the year ...

I agree. I have heard nothing but praise about Harper. These guys may open up the season as the starting tandem.

Particularly interesting considering we were able to at least get a body for Sullivan.

All the draft talk had Harper as a huge reach in the second round. He's exceeding the critic's expectations so far?

Ya, I was riding a guy in a dynasty draft for being so high on Harper for 2006. I like Harper but figured he was a year away. Looks like he may be able to contribute this year.

If I remember correctly Harper withdrew from the combine, not sure if he participated in any of it, but know he didn't run the 40. He most likely would not have helped himself much if he participated anyway. However, he ran a 4.50 at his pro day and I heard he was impressive. Not sure why some thought he was a reach, prolly cause his measurables or lack thereof. But this son-of-a-coach, has great intangables.

I watched him all through college and he is a good player and was definitely the stand out in the secondary. Hard, instinctive hitter. I bet it takes him some time to adjust and will likely have a worthless first year, but he's got potential. Probably just top 20 potential.

they said the same things about Nick Collins and Lofa Tatupu last year.

Vikings | Team reportedly has better financial offer for D. Smith

Fri, 21 Jul 2006 23:51:16 -0700

Scott Reynolds, of PewterReport.com, reports the Minnesota Vikings appear to have put together the better financial package for free agent SS Dwight Smith (Saints). The Vikings are competing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for Smith, with both teams contact Smith's agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

I also heard on Sirius this morning that the Cowboys are interested in Smith but have concerns about his past arrests for weapons violations.

Just saw on ESPN, he signed a 3 year deal with the Vikings.
good signing for the Vikings. Even if Tank Williams beats him out for the starting SS job, Smith should replace Brian Williams as the nickel back.

Wow. I agree with Aaron, this is a very solid signing. No way Tank Williams can compete with Smith in coverage nor understanding of Tampa-2 concepts. And since Darren Sharper is already on record as saying he'll be used in the box more often than in prior seasons, Smith won't be called on too much for run support.

I'd be  if I were Tank's agent.

Tank Williams value just further falls in the crapper ...

Sharper gets a nice bump (FS to SS, although does he split more time with Tank playing in reserve?), as does Smith (cut to starting FS) ...

Vikings | T. Williams to reserve role

Tue, 25 Jul 2006 16:20:34 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports Minnesota Vikings SS Tank Williams will play in a reserve role with the addition FS Dwight Smith, as FS Darren Sharper is expected to move to strong safety, where Williams was going to compete for a starting job.

Vikings | Smith reunited with Tomlin

Tue, 25 Jul 2006 16:19:32 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports Minnesota Vikings FS Dwight Smith is expected to start at free safety with the Vikings. He is reunited with Mike Tomlin, the Vikings' defensive coordinator, who was Smith's secondary coach for four years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Vikings | Sharper likely to start at strong safety

Tue, 25 Jul 2006 16:18:58 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports Minnesota Vikings FS Darren Sharper is likely to move to strong safety with the addition of FS Dwight Smith.

Vikings | Smith reaches three-year deal

Tue, 25 Jul 2006 16:18:21 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Minnesota Vikings have reached a three-year, $6.5 million deal with free agent FS Dwight Smith (Saints). He didn't receive a signing bonus as part of the contract, but he will be paid the $1.2 million he was scheduled to earn with the New Orleans Saints. Smith will receive a $615,000 roster bonus and $585,000 base salary. In 2007, he'll receive a $100,000 workout bonus, a $500,000 roster bonus and a $1.6 million base salary. In 2008, he'll have a $2.5 million base salary, $100,000 workout bonus and $500,000 roster bonus.

on ESPN earlier, they said that Sharper had one safety spot locked up and that Dwight Smith would compete with Tank Williams for the other spot. Guess that's not likely after seeing the money they gave to Smith. If he takes over the FS spot, their secondary is definitely improved but they still could have an issue at nickel.

Hoping that Cedric Griffin will be good enough soon enough to fill nickle.

Spartans346 Posted Today, 08:23 PM Good for Vik's D.

I agree, this is a great pickup for the Vikes and the BLONDE BOMBSHELL's team in league 33. I am ecstatic about this deal - it does not get any better than this.

What you will see come this season is Dwight Smith in the box as D. Sharper plays the center field position. Which means, this signing escalates D. Smith's value in a big way.

RAPTURE aka BLONDE BOMBSHELL (Super Bowl Bound)

Why would you think that? Sharper is bigger, has a history of being a successful two-way safety, and has already been quoted that he was to be more of an in-the-box defender this season when Tank Williams was his counterpart. Smith is a solid two-way safety as well, but is much better in coverage. Were you speculating or do you have a link that supports your argument?

I'll come up with something tomorrow....a little too late on the East coast.D. Smith played more in the box last year with the Saints, as D. Sharper played more of an Ed Reed type role last year with the Vikes. I think the Vikes will utilize D. Sharper the same way this year as well - Shaper always has the big play potential for doing something special.I know D. Smith is switching teams and may have a new role for his team, but I just can't see D. Smith taking over Sharper's role lfrom last year. Either way, I am looking at this signing as a plus for Smith's value and should put up nice stats.RAPTURE

Minnesota Star Tribune

Smith, 27, will compete with free-agent acquisition Tank Williams for a starting safety spot. Smith almost certainly will have the edge on Williams because of his familiarity with the Tampa-2 scheme that Tomlin is installing. If Smith starts, Darren Sharper likely would be moved to strong safety. Smith also can play cornerback and could be used in that role in the nickel defense.
St. Paul Pioneer Press

Whether he will line up at strong safety or free safety, with Sharper possibly changing positions, is uncertain, but the Vikings celebrated the signing as an upgrade for their secondary.

Tank Williams carted off with a knee injury. Doesn't sound good.

Vikings S Williams Injures Knee

CBSSportsline.com - [Full Article]

Minnesota Vikings SS Tank Williams was carted off the field Saturday afternoon after suffering what initially appeared to be an injury to his left knee. Williams injured the knee while working in a 7-on-7 passing drill and did not make contact with anybody. As soon as he went into his backpedal, he planted his leg and fell to the ground screaming. Williams had problems with his left knee while playing for the Tennessee Titans, and plays with a brace on it.

Ourlads (who in my experience has the best researched and most up-to-date depth charts) has Smith as the starting FS and Tank Williams as the backup to Sharper at SS. Is this not the case?

Vikings | T. Williams out for the 2006 season Published Sun Aug 6 1:23:00 p.m. ET 2006 (KFFL) Sean Jensen, of the Pioneer Press, reports Minnesota Vikings S Tank Williams (knee) has suffered a broken left kneecap and will miss the 2006 season, according to head coach Brad Childress. Childress did not comment when asked if the team would bring in another safety.
