According to Saints Report, they just signed Tommy Polley and Jay Foreman. I doubt Foreman makes the team ... but what about Polley at SLB?

Interesting ...

During Friday's practices, linebacker Colby Bockwoldt, who had played primarily in the middle during the first minicamp in April, was back at his more familiar left outside linebacker position.

Alfred Fincher, who last season played primarily on special teams, took the bulk of the repetitions in the middle.

Right now, it seems, the only linebacker entrenched in his position is free-agent acquisition Scott Fujita on the right side as the coaching staff searches for continuity at one of the Saints' most unsettled positions.

"I'm doing more 'will' (weakside) in this camp," said Bockwoldt, who started all 16 games last season at that spot. "I think the coaches are trying to get a feel for where guys should be come the season, where guys need to be in more of a starting role or a multipurpose role.

"In this business, sometime during the year a guy is going to have to step up and play. I'm sure the coaches are searching for possibilities, which guys need to specialize and which guys can multitask."

Bockwoldt said he hadn't been told specifically where he will play this season, but said exposure to all three linebacker positions would aid in his grasp of the defense.

LB Alfred Fincher, a third round pick from the last draft of the previous administration, has been getting a lot of work with the first string at middle linebacker. Fincher certainly well-equipped for the middle but faces stiff competition from a Saints linebacking corp that features 10 capable men on the roster, six with starting experience.

But Fincher - nor any Saint - has won a starting job. Fincher could still be moved to strongside linebacker, or back to second string inside, since versatile Colby Bockwoldt practiced at MLB heavily earlier in the offseason. Bockwoldt, a starter for the past two seasons, is fighting for a starting job at middle and strongside. Only weakside linebacker Scott Fujita - a groomed and chosen player by Gary Gibbs and Joe Vitt - looks closest to having his starting job and position wrapped up.

Payton on Friday insisted that he wasn't going to lay down a depth chart any time soon.

"I'm not listing a starting lineup today," Payton told the media after the team's first practice on Friday. "Eventually you guys will be able to see who goes with the first group and second group. But I really think it's a mistake if I tried to lay out a starting offensive line or defensive line or for that matter, the starting anything. In fairness to those guys, until we get the pads on, we have a lot of time. We have 11 days with minicamp and the OTAs, we have a whole preseason and training camp in pads. Obviously you begin to coach to think about where your lineups are, but it's a little early right now."
So, Fujita is in. The rest are in a free for all.

That last article has it backwards. Fujita is the SLB & Bockwoldt the WLB. And this is the first I've ever heard anything of Fincher being moved outside. I'd believe that when I hear it come out of Peytons mouth.

(Rotoworld) Alfred Fincher is currently penciled in as the Saints starting MLB.Impact: Tommy Polley should have something to say about that. Fincher, a third-round pick last year, disappointed before undergoing season-ending wrist surgery in August.

(Rotoworld) Anthony Simmons is reportedly the Saints projected starting weak-side linebacker.Impact: Simmons sat out the 2005 season while contemplating football and rehabbing a wrist injury. It appears Colby Bockwoldt will be used as a utility linebacker.

More fuel for speculation
