Saints Update: Brown moving from RT to LT (1 Viewer)

Jammal Brown mentions the move to LT toward the end of the article. I personally hope the Saints trade down and nab A.J. Hawk. Our Lbs have been miserable since the Dome Patrol of the early 90s.

Exerpt:

"Offensive lineman Jammal Brown, the Saints' top draft pick last season, lost his eastern New Orleans house to Katrina. He plans to try to fix it up and sell it. For now, he lives on the west bank of the Mississippi River and is looking to buy a house north of Lake Pontchartrain.

While dealing with all that, he also must learn a new position, with new coach Sean Payton switching him from right tackle to the left side, an important change because it's Brees' blind side.

"It's like a rookie season all over again -- new coach, new house, new position," Brown said. "There are a lot of changes right now."

When it was just Payton talking about possibly moving Brown to LT, I figured it was a smokescreen to drum up some trade interest with teams interested in Mario Williams. But now that Brown is talking to the media about it like it's his new position I find it harder to believe that the Saints will take Ferguson at #2. I basically have no idea what the Saints are thinking right now...which is probably want the want from every other team interested in the top 5 or 6 draft prospects...

As a lifelong Saints fan I can't believe I'm saying this but they have really made some savvy moves this offseason. Don't get me wrong, I think Mickey Loomis is Benson's lapdog, but this is the first offseason I can remember where the draft-related personnel moves have been spot on (After the Ditka's Infamous Ricky Williams Trade, Trading a first rounder and more for HEATH SHULER, Loomis' content with NOT signing any not washed-up FA LBs for the last 6 years or so.) In the past, the HC in N.O. was left out of the loop (one of the reasons Haslett left), but it appears that maybe Loomis is actually listening to Sean Payton, who from what I read, was the driving force behind the Brees signing.

That being said, a major gaffe after such a nice offseason would make sense.

Maybe they want Justice now and would rather break him into his more natural position at RT from college.

Not only that, but he can be had with a move down and bring the team another pick or a veteran player. Everything I'm reading about the Saints suggests they are really working hard to trade down. After Bush people seem stuck on a tier of three that has to be drafted. D'Brick, Leinart, Mario. I think that tier is deeper than that. Davis, Hawk, Justice, Ngata, Huff, Bunkley. If you're the Saints Brick, Leinart, Mario, aren't nearly as interesting as any of the other four.

The article also mentioned the current starting LBs are Antony Simmons Weakside, Coby Buckwodlt middle, Fujita strong side. If there ever was a team that needed Hawk more than the Saints I have never seen it!

Simmons - out of the league last year

Buckwodlt - never played middle

Please let us know what/where you are reading that. Everything I've read or heard is just FBGs and a few analysts assuming that the Saints would want to trade down. I don't think I've actually heard anyone in the organization say that the Saints definitely want to trade down.

FYI, The Saints did NOT trade a #1 draft pick for HEATH SHULER.

I don't have a link, but I just read a different version of this information online via espn or some other major sports site, and it said that Jammal Brown was going to move there for mini camps / etc up until the draft, and based on his performance will determine whether they draft D'Brickashaw Ferguson or not.

Sorry that I don't have a link, but this is a significant difference than the Saints saying that they are moving him over.

It's only temporary unless he proves he can do it.

So, let's switch the topic to "can Jammal Brown handle LT?" Saints homers?

The Saints HAD to do this (that is posture like Brown is moving and they are fine with it). Otherwise they would be telegraphing their plans, which might cause them to lose a lot of leverage in negotiations.

This is the season of misinformation - we can all speculate, but we'll only know in 3 weeks what was real and what was BS.

Hes got the tools, but no one can answer this without seeing him try it. Some guys just cant change sides.

Correct. Sorry for the misleading nature of the sentence you put in bold. It should say, "Everything I am reading between the lines, suggests the Saints want to move down."I agree with the related comments here.

When the team pulled off an upset of sorts by luring former Pro Bowler Drew Brees to New Orleans last month, it not only received an upgrade at quarterback, but also major power at the bargaining table in dealing with those teams that might covet the No. 2 pick that the Saints organization no longer desperately requires. In other words, if you want Matt Leinart, you'd better get on the horn to the Saints. If you're the Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, or to a lesser extent the Arizona Cardinals or New York Jets, and you're targeting your quarterback of the future, you'd better be prepared to send some major beads and wampum to New Orleans in exchange for the right to select that player.
Mentioned here too.
The New York Jets, who covet a quarterback in this draft, pick fourth and have a second first-round pick at No. 29. The Tennessee Titans, who pick third, also desire a quarterback.

Because both teams want to pick a quarterback, should the Saints trade down to third or fourth, it's likely Ferguson will be available at either spot.
Payton sees issues on the OL, and with Bentley gone, he's probably interested in interior players available with later picks.
Payton was unavailable for comment Thursday, but said at last week's owners' meeting in Orlando that he saw the need for improvement along the Saints' offensive line when he assessed the team's game tape from last season, but wouldn't say if the team was looking for a certain type of offensive lineman.

"I want someone who's smart and tough," Payton said. "I do think it's hard to pigeonhole just a certain size. I think that good offensive linemen come in different shapes and sizes. But I think toughness and someone who's a thinker is important, especially at that position."
That's a pretty solid description of D'Brick, btw.

you know, in thinking more about this, it makes me believe they might be targeting Winston Justice. A RT who played for a southpaw....Maybe the reason they want to test Jammal Brown out at LT isn't so they can avoid drafting D'Brick, but because they don't believe he's capable of protecting Brees' blindside at RT.

Might Buffalo trade up? (just throwing a shot in the dark)

Brees batted left-handed when he played baseball, but he's right handed QB. LT has his blindside. I still like the idea of them pursuing Justice and some extra value by trading down.
