Saints v. Chargers, 8/27 Preseason #3 (1 Viewer)

bad throw by Volek into double coverage.. no chance and the WR had no shot to break that up.

Ivory with a nice burst through the right side.. good blocking by Saints. wasnt touched till 3rd level by DB

This thread is terrible. All it is "yea nice move good run nice catch" Any good info for guys who don't have the game? Lookig for vision, cuts, pass protection, hands, routes running....
Phillip Rivers was standing on the sideline with his hands on his hips, he had a mean look look on his face that would melt ice. He didnt say anything, he was just standing there. And just when he was watching the pass protection and route runing, they cut away from him. No further updates on what he did after than.

Matthews has shown some great burst. The Chargers o-line has not been dominant (not that they were expected to) but he's shown some quicks and ability to break tackles.Gates is getting lots of love and has looked good after the catch. Breaking tackles, spinning and stretching for extra yards.

Brees and Rivers...are considered two of the best for a reason. They look as great as they always do.

Reggie Bush has caught a lot of passes but imo has looked like crap. I was starting to move him onto my list of potential sleeper/value pick but he's now moved off my list entirely. He just doesn't look that good. On the plus side of things he's still getting passes thrown his way...
Any other opinions on how Bush looked?

personally.. I thought Bush looked pretty good. Several pass play calls that were designed for Bush and he looked pretty explosive after the catch and made few moves. Nothing spectacular but In my opinion looked pretty decent.

IIRC he also dropped a few passes.

I thought the only one he looked good on was the busted play when Brees scrambled and tossed the ball to Bush.

well.. if u take that 38 yard pass to the right (i believe) he only had 32 yards on 6 other receptions. 3 rushes for 16 yards (1 for 12 yards). Believe one dump off to the left side he looked explosive and tried to cut back in between 2 chargers.. that play he looked ok. Cant dispute that he's gotten few touches and that the Saints are designing plays just to get his hands on the ball. Bush was also targeted 8 times.

As a Pierre Thomas owner (RB2) its not exactly making me feel any better.. 10 touches for Bush (7 pass, 3 run) and 9 for Thomas (7 rush, 2 pass)

Chris Wilson looking like he doesnt want to backup Gates dropping that sure 1st down pass on 3rd and 4. And on que SD punts and Chris Ivory takes a screen pass from Ramsey on 1st play to the left.. jukes inside first SD defender, breaks 2 tackles in between 2 chargers at the 2nd level.. then puts on a few stiff arms breaking away to the end zone... Broke 6 tackles going for 70+ yards. GREAT RUN

I thought just the opposite. Floyd lumbers. He ran a horrible route on an out pattern and it was almost picked by Grier. He got open in the zone between the corner and safety and was wide open on the TD. He is going to struggle to separate from top corners, not to mention he had a drop on low tough pass.

Believe he made 2 catches where he used his big, tall physical frame to coral the ball while taking a hit.. Route running not the best. Both resulted in 1st downs. Rivers went to Floyd 4 times on 3rd down. 3 converted.8 targets, 4 catches.. believe one drop he got hit but overall I'm happy that Rivers is obv. looking his way and at 6'5 225 I find it hard to believe he cant separate from a DB who's much smaller. Speed wise u may have a point but with a body that size you dont have to be the fastest guy to get open. Also was thrown at on sideline where was a fight for the ball resulting in the NO defender appearing to pcik the ball off but ruled incomplete.

Speed is not the problem as much as quickness is. He made reception on a comeback where Gay was playing way off in man coverage. Had that been Tracy Porter, I doubt he would have seen that cushion because his size is the only problem for a good DB.

Ryan Mathews looked great again tonight. He's got game for sure. But to be honest, from a fantasy production perspective, the results weren't that impressive. He got 43 yards on 13 carries, and 16 of those came on one play, for a 3.3 average. We're talking 4 fantasy points in three quarters. The problem is that there simply wasn't much of a hole for him to run through on most of those carries. Was the NO defense just putting the right plays in place (I noticed they blitzed a bunch), or is this SD line going to have trouble making holes for him all season? After all, it does little good to get 300 touches if there's nowhere to go.

I was also sorry to see Hester get the goal-line carry and TD instead of Mathews. :X

I have a draft tomorrow, and I was considering going after Ryan a bit early, but I'm feeling a little less comfortable with that now.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't worry about the Hester TD since Mathews was at TB on the play. It would have been a bigger worry if Hester and Tolbert were in the backfield instead. It shouldn't change your opinion of him.

The Saints did Blitz quite a bit and put 8 in box several times. Matthews however did make the most when he got room and even showed great burst one particular run beating the Saints ROLB to the corner with 2 other Saints in pursuit to gain positive yards..Looked like he'd get caught for negative yards or struggle to get back to the line. He also caught 2 passes. 1 in particular he took and showed good burst taking on 2 Saints defenders instead or running out of bounds. He took on several Saints defenders straight on and bounced off or ran over guys few times.. (LB and DB) He converted a 3rd down to get to the 5. He had ran few times before then so may just been winded.. Not entirely sure. I'd think after this game the Chargers are more likely to give McNeil (LT) a contract than Vjax. Matthews ran hard and showed more burst than I thought he had. Also caught 2 passes so the statement Norv turner made about him wanting to get Matthews 250 carrues and 40 rec. dont look so far fetched. He may be stopped up few times but I have no doubt he has the ability to break tackles and contribute some big plays to the offense. TD's are always a tough call but I'd expect him to get at least 10 combined. I drafted Matthews 2.1 in a 12 team PPR dynasty so I'm hoping he runs the way I believe he can once the season starts... Obv. from the tape I've seen so far that he's pretty good with some nice upside.

Actually, I am kind of glad his performance was "under the radar" from a pure results standpoint. If he had turned in a 120-yard, 2 TD night, it likely would have jeopardized my ability to take him where I am going to attempt to get him in my draft. I am sure my league mates were watching the game tonight as well.

If Bush can look like crap and still score 15 points (in PPR) in half a game, I'll take it in any draft.

This is what I'm torn on...he looked lousy but he got a lot of love from the coaches.

Yea Scooter.. this was the type of game for Matthews where the stats didnt indicate how well Matthews looked. Hopefully that weighs in your favor to your counter parts.

I reached on Matthews bc of the thought that SD wouldnt trade up to 12 to take a guy they dont think will be a work horse player or a special talent. I've seen him in 2 pre season games and feel good about my pick. Good luck

So did his performance tonight lock up the #3 RB position for Ivory?

If you were a PT owner would you handcuff him with Ivory?

Nice long TD by Ivory; really like this kid.
The Ivory run was incredible. What are his chances to move into the rotation w/ Thomas and Bush?
Donno; the book on Ivory is that he has good athleticism, size, and speed, but there just isn't much information on him. He was a transfer from Washington State who then dealt with injuries and only had 39 carries his senior year. He has 37 carries for 141 yards this preseason, for a 3.8 ypc. That isn’t exactly setting the world on fire, but he’s shown that he can contribute. With Hamilton and Hill out, he should almost certainly be on the roster. I think he runs with more power than Betts already, amd if Betts doesn’t show he’s more than pedestrian, then Ivory could slide into a Mike Bell-like role.

That being said, Ivory *was* stuffed a couple of times at the goal line last week. Still, overall he reminds me a lot of Pierre Thomas. Not just because they’re undrafted Saints, but because Ivory has a lot of fight to him and makes a lot of positive yardage. Effort + talent + opportunity is a good confluence.

A nice article on him is here: http://www.neworleans.com/sports/saints/saints-news/450885.htmlhttp://www.neworleans.com/sports/saints/saints-news/450885.html

How did NaaNee look?
4 targets, 2 rec. for 24 yards.. Rivers went to him 4th play of the game for 9 yards over the middle but didnt go back to him till the 3rd quarter (2 incompletions before his 2nd reception). All short route patterns. Made a nice run and catch on short pass again (2nd rec) over middle and ran few yards.. 15 yd. play. Other than that it was Gates and Floyd getting all the looks. Floyd was in I believe for both 3rd Quarter possesions along with NaaNee so that cant be bad sign that 2nd half NaaNee got more looks. (3-1 for NaaNee). Not alot to go off of but he looked bit explosive on that 15 yard pass after the catch if I remember correctly.

He'll def. make the roster I would think. He did get stuffed on a few runs but he also ran tough with some nice moves. Ran some guys over and showed he can break tackles. Had huge run for TD where he broke 6 tackles off of a screen pass where it appeared SD had him for a loss. Not sure how many touches he'd get if he makes the roster but he's def. a big powerful bruising back.

I was pretty sure I was going after Matthews at 1.11 or 2.2. Now not so sure. Nothing to do with his talent. Everything to do with the line - unlike the first 2 games, too many times where there wasn't 1 inch of a hole. Also didn't like the rotations with Hester/Sproles - not convinced they feel they can hammer it in from inside the 5 - may pass a lot like last year. Could be overthinking this - I really like this kid.

Yes.. the line didnt give him that much tonight (even more reason to get McNeil signed) but he did make most when he got a little space. He also carried the ball 5 times on that opening scoring drive. 2 consecutive times before the Hester TD. He was however on the field as the tailback on the Hester TD also. The 2nd TD where Rivers was out of the shot gun to a wide open Floyd was more to do with the Saints blitzing and putting 8 in the box at this point in the few plays leading up to this.He looked like the real deal though in his limited space/touches. Ran with determination and took on defenders.. showed good bust of speed at times. Liked what i saw.

From a regular Saints viewer - This is the best Reggie Bush has looked since his rookie season, even better. He actually knows how to run behind the O Line now and should see double digit TDs this year combined easily. Look for Bush to have his career year this year across the board as his explosive first step is back and he isn't afraid to put his head down.

Ryan Matthews has skills and fresh legs. Interesting what happens when the regular season comes and single coverage with 8 in the box show up. Gates will keep the middle open but the WRs leave nothing that is scary.

Saints Defense will have its best season ever though won't score 8 TDs again. They will score a ton though as they may have sack numbers similar to the good Steeler defenses as Greg Williams is going to send everyone with Porter and Greer healthy.

Saints WRs outside of Colston will be once again a shot in the dark.

Don't draft Shockey for any reason.

Gates will lead the team in everything receiving if he isn't given triple teams on every play. Floyd is going to score well early but Nannee will have more TDs by year's end.

River's decline is really just smoke as he has found the ability now to make something out of nothing and reads defenses extremely well.

Bush looked ok tonight. He did show some explosiveness but Im still not sold he can run between the tackles and stay healthy.Matthews is a work horse seems and sproles will offset the work load. Not worried about him getting worn down. It's obvious the Chargers need to sign McNeil though and it seems by the protection tonight that he's gaining leverage in a long term contract with SD.

I think Greg Williams is an excellent D-Coordinator but the Chargers didnt have that much trouble moving the ball on both 1st half scoring drives. 2 scoring drives of 10+ plays in the 1st half even when the blitz picked up. Chargers did have few 3 and outs. Both teams looked decent at times. The Saints offense looks very good still so if the Defense can hold down the fort they should win alot games.. (mr. obv)

I also think Floyd has more TDs. Naanee is comparable in size but 2 inches shorter. Could go either way but Floyd got alot more targets tonight.

Not that the Saints defense is super or anything, but they are a much different group when the secondary is healthy. Porter didn't play last night and it showed - Randall Gay was lit up like a Christmas tree and Malcolm Jenkins is showing some big-time growing pains at safety while Sharper also sits the sidelines. I wouldn't put too much stock into Floyd just on the basis of this game.

Not only that, but it was from nearly six yards out.

:blackdot: plus, naanee has 40 catches in 3 years. dierdorf is useless.
