Saints vs Bengals - Week 10 (1 Viewer)

Going with Bushrod at LT ... hmmm

...

Nice seal block by Taysom Hill on that Kamara screen. 1st down.

Stop with that
If this refers to using Taysom Hill as a gadget, completely concur.

Yes, I'm highly biased as a Brees owner. So it definitely is the root of why I want to see Payton quit this silliness already.

But even objectively, they keep trying this idiotic wildcat-esque playcalls putting Hill all over the field including under center. The plays fail spectacularly, then the Saints just come in and run a regular play like an outside sweep for Kamara or an outlet pass to Ingram, resulting in a TD.

Just play the damned game, Payton. Stop trying to get cute.

Biased as well with Kamara and Thomas but if it worked beautifully I could at least understand it. But it doesn’t.

Teams keep giving up yards to Taysom so why should they stop doing it?
Because the team is way more successful simply keeping their HOF under center to throw perfect strikes and manage the game intelligently.

Just as I'm typing this, Brees threads a perfect ball between a soft spot amidst 3 defenders to Thomas for a TD.

I actually think the onus of this question is on the Hill boosters -- with Brees so successful doing what he has always done, why should they deviate from that? I don't think it's arguable that the team is more successful using Bress than it is using Hill.

One sets up the other.

interestingly ... opposing fans remember the failed T Hill plays. Saints fans remember the successful ones

Also love opponents having to spend prep time on Hill packages, too.

It’s nothing more than a mind game. Ensuring that opposing defenses never quite settle in.

No link, but I would bet that Payton believes Brees & Co benefit from the opposing defense having discombobulated on a previous down.

One sets up the other.
2/3 54 0 TDs passing, 23/133/1TD/1Fumble rushing, 2/1 receiving on the year -- not exactly a force to reckon with here.

Compare that to the opportunity cost of what Brees might have done with those snaps -- this game alone shows that he only needs a down or two to get Kamara/Ingram/Thomas in a position to help the team score.

So let's just agree to disagree on this one.

In order for your statement to be true, these gadget plays with Taysom actually have to consistently work.

You know what really gets under the skin and into the heads of opposing players and D coordinators?

Long sucsessful drives and scoring TDs -- the kind that Brees consistently delivers.

OK, off soap box on this issue.

Tom Connors, I don’t disagree with you at all from a statistical standpoint. I just think Payton’s reasoning can’t be derived from raw stats. Part of his reasoning is to elicit a mental edge — and high efficiency may not be necessary for what Payton is trying to get defenses to think/do.

SID, have they scored 30 points with a backup LT?

Heartbreaking story with Jermon Bushrod ... a lot on his mind in recent weeks.
